A passive control method of the interaction between a weak normal shock-wave and a turbulent boundary-layer was simulated using two-dimensional Navier-Stokes computations. The inflow Mach number just upstream of the normal shock wave was 1.33. A porous plate wall having a cavity underneath was used to control the shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction. The flows through the porous holes and inside the cavity were investigated to get a better understanding of the flow physics involved in this kind of passive control method. The present computations were validated by some recent wind tunnel tests. The results showed that downstream of the rear leg of the $\lambda$-shock wave the main stream inflows into the cavity, but upstream of the rear leg of the $\lambda$-shock wave the flow proceeds from the cavity toward to the main stream. The flow through the porous holes did not choke fur the present shock/boundary layer interaction.
The Interactions of shock wave with turbulent boundary layers in high-speed flows cause complex flowfields which result in increased adverse pressure gradients, skin friction and temperature. Accurate and reliable prediction of such phenomena is needed in designing high-speed propulsion systems. Such analyses of the complex flowfields require sophisticated numerical scheme that can resolve interactions between shock wave and boundary layers accurately. Therefore the purpose of the present. article is to introduce an accurate and efficient mixed explicit-implicit generalized Galerkin finite element method. To demonstrate the validity of the theory and numerical procedure, several benchmark cases are investigated.

It has been long suspected that the transition region may give rise to local pressure fluctuations and radiated sound that are different from those created by the fully-developed turbulent boundary layer at equivalent Reynolds number. Experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of pressure fluctuations at the transition. Flush-mounted microphones and hot wires are used to measure the pressure fluctuations and local flow velocities within the boundary layer in the low noise wind tunnel. From this experiment we could observe the spatial and temporal development process of T-S wave using Wigner-Ville method and find the relations between the characteristic frequency of T-S wave and free stream velocity and the boundary layer thickness based on nondimensional pressure spectra scaled on outer variables.
An experimental study providing additional knowledge of quasi-conical symmetry in swept shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interactions is described. When a turbulent boundary layer on the flat plate is subjected to interact with a swept planar shock wave, the interaction flowfield far from fin leading edge has a nature of conical symmetry, which topological features of the interaction flow appear to emanate from a virtual conical origin. Surface streakline patterns obtained from the kerosene-lampblack tracings have been utilized to obtain representative surface features of the flow, including the location of the virtual conical origin. The scaling law for the sharp-fin interactions suggested by previous investigators has been reexamined for different freestream Mach numbers. It is noticed that the scaling law reasonably agrees with the present experimental data, however, that the law is not appropriate to estimate the location of the virtual conical origin. Further knowledge of the correlation for the virtual conical origin has thus been proposed.
Injection of microbubbles within the turbulent boundary layer has been investigated for several years as a method to achieve drag reduction. However, the physical mechanism of this phenomenon is not yet fully understood. Experiments in a channel flow for single phase (water) and two phase (water and microbubbles) flows with various void fraction values are studied for a Reynolds number of 5128 based on the half height of the channel and bulk velocity. The state-of-the art Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) measurement technique is used to measure the instantaneous full-field velocity components. Comparisons between turbulent statistical quantities with various values of local void fraction are presented to elucidate the influence of the microbubbles presence within the boundary layer. A decrease in the Reynolds stress distribution and turbulence production is obtained with the increase of microbubble concentration. The results obtained indicate a decorrelation of the streamwise and normal fluctuating velocities when microbubbles are injected within the boundary layer.

A great number of experimental data indicating shock-induced separation(SIS) in internal or external supersonic flows were reviewed to make clear the mechanism of SIS and to present the criterion of turbulent boundary layer separation. The interesting conclusions were obtained for the considerably wide range of flow geometries that the incipient separation is almost independent of the flow geometries, and that it is relatively unaffected by changes in gas specific heat, and boundary layer Reynolds number, Furthermore, the pressure rise necessary to separate boundary layer in external flows was found to be applicable to SIS in overexpanded propulsion nozzles. This is due to the fact that the SIS phenomenon caused by the interaction between shock waves and turbulent boundary layers is processed through a supersonic deceleration. This is, the SIS in almost all of interacting flow fields is governed by the concept of free interaction, and criterion of SIS is only a Function of upstream Mach number.

Experiments of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer flow bleed on the interaction flow field in a straight tube. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the tube walls to bleed the turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled within the range of 11 per cent. The wall pressures were measured by the flush mounted transducers and Schlieren optical observations were made for almost all of the experiments. The results show that the boundary layer flow bleed reduces the multiple shock waves to a strong normal shock wave. For the design Mach number of 1.6, it was found that the normal shock wave at the position of the silt was resulted from the main flow choking due to the suction of the boundary layer flow.

The effect of pressure gradients on the hairpin structures in three different turbulent boundary layers (ZPG : Re(sub)$\theta$=910, FPG : Re(sub)$\theta$=575, APG : Re(sub)$\theta$=1290) has been examined with instantaneous velocity fields obtained in streamwise-wall-normal planes using PIV (particle image velocimetry) method. In the outer layer hairpin vortices occur in streamwise-aligned packets that propagate with small velocity dispersion. The signature pattern of the hairpin consists of a spanwise vortex core located above a region of strong second quadrant fluctuation (u<0 and v>0 : Q2 event) is clearly observed. The formation of packets explains the occurrence of multiple VITA events in turbulent burst. Noticeable differences are found in the average inclination angles of hairpin vortex packets which are 45$^{\circ}$, 35.7$^{\circ}$, and 51.9$^{\circ}$in the case of ZPG, FPG and APG, respectively. It is found that the large, time-varying, irregularly shaped zones with nearly constant streamwise momentum exist throughout the boundary layer. Within the interior of the envelope the spatial coherence between the velocity fields induced by the individual vortices leads to strongly retarded streamwise momentum, explaining the zones of uniform momentum. The formation of the uniform momentum zone is remarkably different with respect to the pressure gradients especially in the logarithmic layer.
The aim of this study is to compare k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\omega$ closures under the condition of oscillatory layer flow at high Reynolds number. A one dimensional vertical model incorporated with flow momentum equations and turbulence models (k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\omega$) is applied to the laboratory measurements in the turbulent oscillatory boundary layer. The numerical simulation reveals that both turbulence models calculate similar velocity profiles and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). In addition, both deliver high accuracy under the condition of negligible spanwise pressure gradient. Therefore, it is recommended in this study to use k-$\varepsilon$ closure, of which numerical coefficients have been calibrated from many studies, for the cases of straight channel, estuary, and coastal environment where the spanwise pressure gradient is not significant.

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with regularly arrayed cubical roughness elements was performed to investigate the effects of three-dimensional (3D) surface elements. The staggered cubes downstream were periodically arranged in the streamwise and spanwise directions with pitches of $p_x$/k=8 and $p_z$/k=2, where $p_x$ and $p_z$ are the streamwise and spanwise spacings of the cubes; the roughness height (k) was k=$1.5{\theta}_{in}$, where ${\theta}_{in}$ is the momentum thickness at the inlet. Spatially developing characteristics over the 3D cubical roughness were compared with the data obtained from the DNS over the two-dimensional (2D) rod roughened wall and smooth wall. Introduction of the cubical roughness on the TBL affected the turbulent Reynolds stresses not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer; and these effects are consistent with those observed over the 2D rough wall.
