Complex terrain like hill, mountain, and escarpment etc. makes complex air flow. This topographic condition will affect not only speed but also turbulence of wind over the complex terrain. In this paper, turbulence intensities are considered to investigate characteristics of wind over cone-type hills. There are five simple hill models with different slope 0.1${\sim}$0.5(tan${\theta}$) for wind tunnel test. It was observed through wind tunnel tests that turbulence intensities of down-slope wind at the end of the 3-Dimensional hills remarkably increased but ones of windward slope wind at the front side of the hills slightly increased. Also, turbulence intensities proportionally increased with slope of the cone-type hills.

Natural gas is one of the promising alternative fuels because of the abundant deposits and the cleanness of emission gas. CNG has a lot of merits except lower burning speed has a slow disadvantage. One way to overcome the disadvantage is to raise a turbulence intensity. We give various intake for changing turbulence intensity in the cylinder by three kinds of swirl control valve with a way to raise a turbulence intensity. In the present study, a $1.8\ell$ conventional gasoline engine is modified to use a CNG as a fuel instead of gasoline. We try to virify combustion and emission characteristics in each engine parameters. Parameters of experimentation are equivalence ratio, spark timing and intake flow change. The results of this study are as swirl flows. In the case of adding swirl flow, burning speed and torque are increased. But NOx and THC concentration are increased a little respectively.
This paper represents a numerical study of the flow field due to the interactions between a pair of vortices produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow. In order to analyze longitudinal vortices induced by the vortex generators, the pseudo-compressibility method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Strokes equations of a 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flow. A two-layer $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to a flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary to predict the flow structure and turbulence characteristics of the vortices. The computational results predict accurately the vortex characteristics related to the flow field, the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. Also, in the prediction of skin friction characteristics the computational results are reasonably close to those of the experiment obtained from other researchers.

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by the interaction of a pair of vortices are studied numerically. To analyze the common flow up produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow, the pseudo-compressibility viscous method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flows. To predict turbulence characteristics, a two-layer $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used on the flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary The computational results predict accurately Reynolds stress, turbulent kinetic energy and flow field generated by the vortex generators. The numerical results, such as thermal boundary layers, skin friction characteristics and heat transfers, are also reasonably close to the experimental data.

Bora is a strong, usually dry temporally and spatially transient wind that is common at the eastern Adriatic Coast and many other dynamically similar regions around the world. One of the Bora main characteristics is its gustiness, when wind velocities can reach up to five times the mean velocity. Bora often creates significant problems to traffic, structures and human life in general. In this study, Bora velocity and near-ground turbulence are studied using the results of three-level high-frequency Bora field measurements carried out on a meteorological tower near the city of Split, Croatia. These measurements are analyzed for a period from April 2010 until June 2011. This rather long period allows for making quite robust and reliable conclusions. The focus is on mean Bora velocity, turbulence intensity, Reynolds shear stress and turbulence length scale profiles, as well as on Bora velocity power spectra and thermal stratification. The results are compared with commonly used empirical laws and recommendations provided in the ESDU 85020 wind engineering standard to question its applicability to Bora. The obtained results report some interesting findings. In particular, the empirical power- and logarithmic laws proved to fit mean Bora velocity profiles well. With decreasing Bora velocity there is an increase in the power-law exponent and aerodynamic surface roughness length, and simultaneously a decrease in friction velocity. This indicates an urban-like velocity profile for smaller wind velocities and a rural-like velocity profile for larger wind velocities. Bora proved to be near-neutral thermally stratified. Turbulence intensity and lateral component of turbulence length scales agree well with ESDU 85020 for this particular terrain type. Longitudinal and vertical turbulence length scales, Reynolds shear stress and velocity power spectra differ considerably from ESDU 85020. This may have significant implications on calculations of Bora wind loads on structures.

The purpose of this study is analysis of aircraft turbulence of mid Korea using VWS from Osan radiosonde data and comparison with the PIREPs reporting the aircraft turbulence during $1990{\sim}1999$. The results of this study summarized that the frequence of aircraft events is more higher in winter time and in lower level(near the surface) of the atmosphere from VWS analysis using radiosonde data. And comparison with PIREPs data shows that relatively high skill score(44%) using the VWS method. It appears that the operational forecast skill score of aircraft turbulence is much higher using VWS than empirical method, due to the upgrade of the discrimination criteria of the aircraft turbulence.
The objective of this study is to determine the influence of free-stream turbulent intensity on the three-dimensional turbulent flow in a linear turbine cascade. The range of free-stream turbulence intensity considered is 0.7~10%. This study was performed numerically. The results show that the mass averaged loss coefficient increased according to the increase of free-stream turbulence intensity due to increased value of the mass averaged total pressure loss coefficient which was higher than the decreased value of the mass averaged secondary flow loss coefficient. The loss coefficient distribution was changed suddenly at a free-stream turbulence intensity of 10% while the loss coefficient distribution was rarely changed at a lower free-stream turbulence intensity of 5%.
The purpose of this research is to develop the model of turbulence modulation due to the presence of particles in various types of particle-laden flows. Available experimental data were surveyed and the dependence of turbulence modulation of carrier-phase on particle size, concentration and particle Reynolds number were examined. This study takes into account the effect of wake produced by particle, the drag between phases and the velocity gradient in the wake to estimate the production of turbulence. The model of turbulence modulation using the mixing length theory under the assumption of equilibrium flow is proposed. Numerical results show that the model is successful in predicting the characteristics of the particle-laden flow in various conditions both qualitatively and quantitatively.
We use three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the characteristics of turbulence driven in rotating, vertically-stratified disk. Our models are isothermal, and local in the in-plane direction while global in the vertical direction. We allow localized regions with density larger than the threshold value to explode and inject kinetic energy to the surrounding medium in the real space rather than Fourier space, mimicking supernova explosions thought to be the dominant turbulence source. This work extends our previous study where we studied turbulence in a non-rotating, uniform environment. We find that the galaxy rotation does not make a significant difference in the turbulence level at saturation, since the associated shear velocity is much smaller than the explosion velocity. We analyze the properties of turbulence in our models and compare them with those from the uniform-density models. We also discuss the astrophysical implication of our findings.
Compressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in two dimension is studied through high-resolution, numerical simulations with the isothermal equation of state. First, hydrodynamic turbulence with Mach number $(M)_{rms}\;\~$1 is generated by enforcing a random force. Next, initial, uniform magnetic field of various strengths with Alfvenic Mach number Ma $\gg$ 1 is added. Then, the simulations are followed until MHD turbulence is fully developed. Such turbulence is expected to exist in a variety of astrophysical environments including clusters of galaxies. Although no dissipation is included explicitly in our simulations, truncation errors produce dissipation which induces numerical resistivity. It mimics a hyper-resistivity in our second-order accurate code. After saturation, the resulting flows are categorized as SF (strong field), WF (weak field), and VWF (very weak field) classes respectively, depending on the average magnetic field strength described with Alfvenic Mach number, $(Ma)_{rms}{\ge}1$, $(Ma)_{rms}{\~}1$, and $(Ma)_{rms}{\gg}1$. The characteristics of each class are discussed.
