  • Numerical investigations have been performed to examine the effects of the computational grids on the prediction of the flow characteristics inside the turbine cascades. Three kinds of grid system based on H-type grid are applied to the high-turning transonic turbine rotor blades and comparisons with the experimental data and the numerical results of each grid structure have been done. In addition, the grid sensitivity on the estimation of the blade performances has been investigated.

Numerical Prediction of Unsteady Flows through Whole Nozzle-Rotor Cascade Channels with Partial Admission

  • This paper presents a numerical study for unsteady flows in a high-pressure steam turbine with a partial admission stage. Compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the high-order high-resolution finite-difference method based on the fourth-order compact MUSCL TVD scheme, Roe's approximate Riemann solver, and the LU-SGS scheme. The SST-model is also solved for evaluating the eddy-viscosity. The unsteady two-dimensional flows through whole nozzle-rotor cascade channels considering a partial admission are numerically investigated. 108 nozzle passages with two blockages and 60 rotor passages are simultaneously calculated. The influence of the flange in the nozzle box to the lift of rotors is predicted. Also the efficiency of the partial admission stage changing the number of blockages and the number of nozzles is parametrically predicted.

  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to studythe flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade by experiment. Theflow was visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersoniccascade with 3-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested over a wide range ofpressure ratio. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascadeinteraction and shock boundary layer interactions were observed.

입사각의 변화에 따른 터빈 캐스케이드에서 손실계수에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Loss Coefficient of Turbine Cascade with Incidence Angles)

  • For the study on loss coefficients of turbine cascade with variation of incidence angle, the wind-tunnel tests were performed under the ranges in velocity of 10 m/s, 15 m/s, 20 m/s and incidence angles from $-20^{\circ}\;to\;20^{\circ}$ by intervals of $5^{\circ}$. Comparing our results with Soderberg's prediction, differences in loss coefficient were $2.5\%\;and\;2.8\%$ each for 10 m/s and 15 m/s. A large disagreement of $30.3\%$ was showed at 20 m/s freestream velocity. The comparisons of these test results with Ainley's prediction showed an $8\%$ difference in the case of 20 m/s freestream velocity. Test results were approximately comparable with Ainley's loss prediction's in incidence angles. Generally, averaged total pressure loss seemed to be decreased as Reynolds number increased. The total pressure loss coefficients were increased parabolically, as incidence angles were increased negatively and positively from $0^{\circ}$, in all speed ranges. At the far low freestream velocities, minimum loss accurred between $-5^{\circ}\;and\;+5^{\circ}$. But this minimum range narrowed the location of this range by shifting to the direction of the angle as freestream velocity was increased.

  • In this paper, we present the estimation of wind turbine power generation using Cascade Architectures of Fuzzy Neural Networks(CAFNN). The proposed model uses the wind speed average, the standard deviation and the past output power as input data. The CAFNN identification process uses a 10-min average wind speed with its standard deviation. The method for rule-based fuzzy modeling uses Gaussian membership function. It has three fuzzy variables with three modifiable parameters. The CAFNN's configuration has three Logic Processors(LP) that are constructed cascade architecture and an effective optimization method uses two-level genetic algorithm. First, The CAFNN is trained with one-day average input variables. Once the CAFNN has been trained, test data are used without any update. The main advantage of using CAFNN is having simple structure of system with many input variables. Therefore, The proposed CAFNN technique is useful to predict the wind turbine(WT) power effectively and hence that information will be helpful to decide the control strategy for the WT system operation and application.

선형터빈 케스케이드 통로내의 2차 유동과 손실에 관한 연구 (The Experimental Investigation of the Secondary Flow and Losses Within the Plane Turbine Cascade Passage)

  • This paper represents the results of the experiments of the three-dimensional flow and the aerodynamic loss caused by the three-dimensional flow within the plane bucket blades. To research the secondary flow and the aerodynamic loss, the large-scale plane bucket blade of lst-stage in the low pressure steam turbine is made of FRP. The detailed investigation of the secondary flow and the aerodynamic loss using 5-hole pressure probe within turbine cascade has been carried out in the low speed wind tunnel. The limiting streamlines of the suction and endwall surface have been visualized by the oil film method. The flow visualization of the secondary flow has been performed by the laser light sheet technique and image processing system. By using the method mentioned above, it is possible to observe the evolution of the pitchwise mass-averaged flow deviation angle and total pressure loss coefficient, the secondary flow, and the aerodynamic loss through the cascade.

  • The effect of pressure-side opening length on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-tochord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.05% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The opening length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $OL/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.7 The results show that longer OL leads not only to weaker secondary flow but also to lower aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, while it significantly widens the area with high aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane is kept almost constant for $0.0{\leq}OL/c_c{\leq}0.3$, whereas it increases rapidly for $OL/c_c$ > 0.3 in proportion to $OL/c_c$. There is little deterioration in flow turning with increasing $OL/c_c$.

  • Leakage flow through turbine blade tip gap causes strong leakage vortex near the blade suction side and induces large aerodynamic losses. In this study, the conventional plane tip and various squealer tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shape on the total pressure loss. Three tip gap clearances of 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.0% of blade span were tested. Flow measurement was conducted at one chord downstream from the trailing edge with a five-hole probe. Results showed that the leakage vortex was stronger than passage vortex and the mass averaged overall total pressure loss through the cascade was the lowest for suction side blade tip case. For all tested cases, the area averaged overall total pressure loss was increased as the tip clearance increased.

Optimal Design of Two-Dimensional Cascade with Shock-Free Inflow Criterion

  • The shock-free inflow criterion applied in the development of two-dimensional cascade for turbomachinery design. The developed cascade analysis with potential flow calculation through a panel method has been used to determine the shock-free inflow condition. The combination between cascade analysis and PSO (particle swarm optimization) algorithm provides an opportunity to develop a diagram of a two-dimensional parameter cascade at various airfoil shapes. Analytical equations have been derived from the diagram that will facilitate the turbomachinery designer in applying the shock-free inflow criterion on their developed cascade. This method has been used to develop the very low head axial hydraulic turbine and provides excellent results of numerical and actual prototype performances.

Effects of Combustor-Level High Inlet Turbulence on the Endwall Flow and Heat/Mass Transfer of a High-Turning Turbine Rotor Cascade

  • Experimental data are presented which describe the effects of a combustor-level high free-stream turbulence on the near-wall flow structure and heat/mass transfer on the endwall of a linear high-turning turbine rotor cascade. The end wall flow structure is visualized by employing the partial- and total-coverage oil-film technique, and heat/mass transfer rate is measured by the naphthalene sublimation method. A turbulence generator is designed to provide a highly-turbulent flow which has free-stream turbulence intensity and integral length scale of 14.7% and 80mm, respectively, at the cascade entrance. The surface flow visualizations show that the high free-stream turbulence has little effect on the attachment line, but alters the separation line noticeably. Under high free-stream turbulence, the incoming near-wall flow upstream of the adjacent separation lines collides more obliquely with the suction surface. A weaker lift-up force arising from this more oblique collision results in the narrower suction-side corner vortex area in the high turbulence case. The high free-stream turbulence enhances the heat/mass transfer in the central area of the turbine passage, but only a slight augmentation is found in the end wall regions adjacent to the leading and trailing edges. Therefore, the high free-stream turbulence makes the end wall heat load more uniform. It is also observed that the heat/mass transfers along the locus of the pressure-side leg of the leading-edge horseshoe vortex and along the suction-side corner are influenced most strongly by the high free-stream turbulence. In this study, the end wall surface is classified into seven different regions based on the local heat/mass transfer distribution, and the effects of the high free-stream turbulence on the local heat/mass transfer in each region are discussed in detail.
