  • Advanced gas turbine engines employ turbine entry temperatures so high that cooling of the turbine blades is essential. The coolant flow introduces losses which need to be minimized, and therefore it is important that the minimum amount of coolant is used. This work presents the result of the one-dimensional analysis and the effect of the boundary conditions on coolant flow rate in gas turbine blades.

  • The present study is conducted to identify a better design and optimal number of Francis runner blades for sediment laden high head micro hydropower site, Tara Khola in the Baglung district of Nepal. The runner is designed with in-house code and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed to evaluate the performance with three configurations; 11, 13 and 17 numbers of runner blades. The three sets of runners were also investigated for the sediment erosion tendency. The runner with 13 blades shows better performance at design as well as in variable discharge conditions. 96.2% efficiency is obtained from the runner with 13 blades at the design point, and the runners with 17 and 11 blades have 88.25% and 76.63% efficiencies respectively. Further, the runner with 13 blades has better manufacturability than the runner with 17 blades as it has long and highly curved blade with small gaps between the blades, but it comes with 65% more erosion tendency than in the runner with 17 blades.

  • Turbine blades experience significant surface degradation with service. This paper presents experimental evidence of blade surface roughness reducing turbine efficiency. Performance tests were conducted in a low speed, single-stage axial flow turbine rig with roughened blade surfaces. Sheets of sandpaper with equivalent sandgrain roughnesses of 106 and $400{\mu}m$ were used to roughen the blades. In these tests, effects of roughened stator vanes and rotor blades were separately evaluated. In the fully rough regime ($k_{s}=400{\mu}m$), the experimental results show an 11 percent decrease in normalized efficiency with roughness only on stator vanes ; an 8 percent decrease with roughness only on rotor blades ; and a 19 percent decrease with roughness on both the stator and rotor blades. In the transitionally rough regime ($k_{s}=106{\mu}m$), the trends are similar approximately 4 percent decrease with either roughened stator or roughened rotor and an 8 percent decrease with roughness on both stator and rotor blades. Thus, roughened stator vanes incur more performance penalty than roughened rotor blades.

  • Two and three-dimensional flows around a cross-flow wind turbine are investigated by the numerical simulation. The turbine studied in this paper has cylindrical shape with many small blades along its periphery. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is used for this simulation. A rotating coordinate system, which rotates at the same speed of the turbine, is used in order to simplify the boundary conditions on the blades of the turbine. Additionally, a boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. A third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms. When the number of blades is about 10, the highest torque is obtained.

  • This study proposes a development of blades for the 6W class small wind turbine system, which is applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea, and very easy to pitch control. The materials of the blades was used for the still. Electrical properties of blades improved by increasing with wind speed. The maximum output showed at $10^{\circ}$ of pitch angle and about 3.8[W] at 5.5[m/s] of wind speed.

  • Vibrations of a wind turbine blade have a negative impact on its performance and result in failure of the blade, therefore an approach to effectively control vibration in turbine blades are sought by wind industry. The small domestic horizontal axis wind turbine blades induce flap wise (out-of-plane) vibration, due to varying wind speeds. These flap wise vibrations are transferred to the structure, which even causes catastrophic failure of the system. Shape memory alloys which possess physical property of variable stiffness across different phases are embedded into the composite blades for active vibration control. Previously Shape memory alloys have been used as actuators to change their angles and orientations in fighter jet blades but not used for active vibration control for wind turbine blades. In this work a GFRP blade embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and tested for its vibrational and material damping characteristics, under martensitic and austenite conditions. The embedment portrays 47% reduction in displacement of blade, with respect to the conventional blade. An analytical model for the actuated smart blade is also proposed, which validates the harmonic response of the smart blade.

  • The reduction of noise from wind turbines has been studied using various methods. Some examples include controlling wind turbine blades, designing low-noise-emitting wind turbine blades, and using trailing-edge serrations. Among these methods, serration is considered an effective noise reduction method. Various studies have aimed to understand the effects of trailing-edge serration parameters. Most studies, however, have focused on fixed-wing concepts, and few have analyzed noise reduction or developed a prediction method for rotor-type blades. Herein, a noise prediction method, composed of two noise prediction methods for a wind turbine with trailing-edge serrations, is proposed. From the flow information obtained by an in-house program (WINFAS), the noise from non-serrated blades is calculated by turbulent ingestion noise and airfoil self-noise prediction methods. The degree of noise reduction caused by the trailing-edge serrations is predicted in the frequency domain by Lyu's method. The amount of noise reduction is subtracted from the predicted result of the non-serrated blade and the total reduction of the noise from the rotor blades is calculated.

  • Aeroelasticity is the main source of instability in structures which are subjected to aerodynamic forces. One of the major reasons of instability is the coupling of bending and torsional vibration of the flexible bodies, which is known as flutter. The presented investigation aims to study the aeroelastic stability of composite blades of wind turbine. Geometry, layup, and loading of the turbine blades made of laminated composites were calculated and evaluated. To study the flutter phenomenon of the blades, two numerical and analytical methods were selected. The finite element method (FEM), and JAR-23 standard were used to perform the numerical studies. In the analytical method, two degree freedom flutter and Lagrange's equations were employed to study the flutter phenomena analytically and estimate the flutter speed.
