  • The rapid expansion or condensible gas such as moist air of steam gives rise to nonequilibrium condensation. As a result of irreversibility of condensation process in the supersonic cascade flow of low pressure steam turbine, the entropy of the flow is increased, and the efficiency of the turbine is decreased. In the present study, to investigate the flow of moist air in 2-dimensional cascade made as the configuration of the tip section of the last actual steam turbine moving blade, the static pressure at both sides of pressure and suction of blade are measured by static pressure taps and the distribution of Mach number on both surfaces of the blade are obtained by using the measured static pressure. Also, the flow field is visualized by a schlieren system. From the experimental results, the effects of the stagnation temperature and specific humidity on the flow properties in a 2-dimensional stationary cascade of a practical steam turbine blade are clearly identified.

  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. Experiments were performed to find the flow characteristics of a supersonic turbine with the cascade positions and to find a factor of the expansion loss. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested with the cascade positions. The flow was visualized by a Z-type Schlieren system. The static pressures at the turbine cascade inlet and outlet were measured by pressure transducers and a pressure scanner. Also, The total pressures at the turbine cascade back flow were measured. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions of the supersonic turbine were observed. And the flow characteristics in the supersonic turbine with the cascade positions were observed.

  • A computer code for solving the Reynolds averaged full Navier-Stokes equations has bent developed for analysis of gas and steam turbine cascade flows with the option of using one of two types of turbulence model. One is the Baldwin-Lomax model and the other is standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The numerical integration is based on the explicit four stage Runge-Kutta scheme and finite volume method. To be verified, the resulting code is applied to VKI turbine cascade and compared with the previous experimental results. Finally, the flowfield around a steam turbine cascade is analyzed. Comparisons with experimental data show that present numerical scheme is an accurate Navier-Stokes solver and can give very good predictions for both gas and steam turbine cascade flow.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of the various inlet boundary layer thickness on convective heat transfer distribution in a turbine cascade endwall and blade suction surface. In addition, the proper height of the boundary layer fences for various inlet boundary layer thickness were applied to turbine cascade endwall in order to reduce the secondary flow, and to verify its influence on the heat transfer process within the turbine cascade. Convective heat transfer distributions on the experimental regions were measured by the image processing system. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the blade suction surface were increased with an augmentation of inlet boundary layer thickness. However, in a turbine cascade endwall, magnitude of heat transfer coefficients did not change with variation of inlet boundary layer thickness. The results also present that the boundary layer fence is effective in reducing heat transfer on the suction surface. On the other hand, in the endwall region, boundary layer fence brought about the subsidiary heat transfer increment.

  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested for the leading edge chamfer angle $(\gamma)$ of the supersonic turbine that is the one of the turbine design parameter. Firstly, the flow was visualized by a single pass Schlieren system. Next, total and static pressure of the cascade were measured by a pressure scanning system. Finally, highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine were observed.

  • Numerical simulation on two-dimensional turbine cascade flow has been performed using compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The flow equations are written in a cartesian coordinate system, then mapped into a generalized body-fitted ones. All direction of viscous terms are incoporated and turbulent effects are modeled using the extended ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. Equations are discretized using control volume SIMPLE algorithm on the nonstaggered grid sysetem. Applications are made at a VKI turbine cascade flow in atransonic wind-tunnel and compared to experimental data. Present numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results and simulate the compressible viscous flow characteristics inside the turbine blade passage.

  • The Objective of this study is to document the three-dimensional flow in a turbine cascade with Contoured endwall in terms of Stanton number distribution to proposes an appropriate contraction ratio of endwall contouring which show the best performance. This study was numerically performed. The results show that heat transfer coefficient on the contoured endwall which has the height of 15% of the axial chord showed best performance. The numerical method and results in this study can be applied to the design of gas turbine cascade with high performance.

  • The blade leading edge is modified to control the secondary flow generated in the turbine cascade with fence by intensifying the suction side branch of the horseshoe vortex. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved with a high Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence closure model for investigating the vortical flows in the turbine cascade. The computational results of total pressure loss coefficients in the wake region are first compared with experiments for validation. The structure and strength of the passage vortex near the suction surface are examined by testing various geometrical parameters of the turbine blade leading edge.
