This report is the result of a basic experiment done on a mock-up tunnel, of what happens to the ventilated flow and fire driven flow inside a railway tunnel as the current inside the tunnel changes when an anti-smoke or a radio frequency invert control is installed. The duct used in this experiment is 10m in length, 0.5m in height and 0.25m in width and made of acrylic. An anti-smoke system with a motor that can produce current of 10m/sec maximum in order to create ventilated flow, has been installed. A honeycomb has been installed at the entrance of the duct to create a current flow that exists in tunnels. In order to create a ventilated flow, a current of 4m/s, 6m/s and 8m/s were generated using the anti-smoke system, as the study of current developed. A Hot-wire(TSI) and Pressure sensor(ENDEVCO) was installed in the duct, 1m apart, as the measurement of current and pressure went on. The current and pressure were automatically measured through the Lap View program and PC; the current flow in the mock-up tunnel generated by the honeycomb has been analyzed the pressure distribution and pressure drop has been analyzed.

For the construction of NATM tunnel, it is required a design based on the accurate soil condition from soil investigation. However, in practice, it often designs tunnels without fully understanding the condition. Especially, when soft soil comes up, or ground water breaks out suddenly on the construction, it needs to secure the stability of tunnel by appropriate reinforcing construction according to the results of measurements on field superlatively reflecting the faced situation. This report reviews the mostsuitable stability of tunnel in the construction of soft soil of tunnel by numerical analysis using FDM after re-evaluated the soil properties through back analysis using the results of measurements to simulate abruptly occurred deformation. And applying steel pipe grouting row by row on the wall and the low part of tunnel and also applying the construction method of temporary invert after excavation of the upper part of tunnel, the excavation of soft soil tunnel secured the structural stability of tunnel has been completed.

This paper concerns the effect of orientation and geometric characteristics of a fracture zone on the tunnel behavior using a numerical investigation. A parametric study was executed on a number of drill and blast tunnelling cases representing different fracture and tunnelling conditions using two and three dimensional finite element analyses. The variables considered include the strike and dip angle of fracture zone relative to the longitudinal tunnel axis, the width and the clearance of the fracture zone, the tunnel depth, and the initial lateral stress coefficient. The results of the analyses were examined in terms of the tunnel deformation including crown settlement, convergence, and invert heave as well as shotcrete lining stresses. The results indicate that the tunnel deformation as well as the shotcrete lining stress are strongly influenced by the orientation of the fracture zone, and that such a trend becomes more pronounced for tunnels with greater depths.
A optimal reinforcement in the joint rock slope excavation adjacent to an existing tunnel would be influenced by excavation distance from the tunnel, slope angel, and joint conditions but has been empirically determined so far. In this study, large scale model tests were conducted to find out the relationship between load translation on the excavation surface and bebavior of the tunnel according to excavation steps of the jointed rock slope. Consequently, two main parameters, joint dip and sloped angle were investigated in those model tests. From the test results, it was found that tunnel deformation was the largest one when the excavation of joints located closer to the tunnel crown or invert. Stability of the slope and the tunnel were varied in a certain excavation stage related to the angle of slope. In the future, based on results of this study the reinforcement method for the tunnel and slope safety in a jointed rock mass will be demonstrated.

For a hydro power plant project, the headrace tunnel having a finished diameter of 3.3m was constructed in volcanic rocks with well-developed vertical joint and high groundwater table. The intake facility was located 20.3 km upstream of the powerhouse and headrace tunnel of 20 km in length and penstock of 440 m in height connected the intake and the powerhouse. The typical caldera lake, Lake Toba set the geology at the site; the caving of the ground caused tension cracks in the vertical direction to be developed and initial stresses at the ground to be released. High groundwater table(the maximum head of 20 bar) in the area of well-connected vertical joints delayed the progress of tunnel excavation severely due to the excessive inflow of groundwater. The excavation of tunnel was made using open-shield type TBM and mucking cars on the rail. High volume of water inflow raised the water level inside tunnel to 70 cm, 17% of tunnel diameter (3.9 m) and hindered the mucking of spoil under water. To improve the productivity, several adjustments such as modification of TBM and mucking cars and increase in the number of submersible pumps were made for the excavation of severe water inflow zone. Since the ground condition encountered during excavation turned out to be much worse, it was decided to adopt PC segment lining instead of RC lining. Besides, depending on the conditions of the water inflow, rock mass condition and internal water pressure, one of the invert PC segment lining with in-situ RC lining, RC lining and steel lining was applied to meet the site specific condition. With the adoption of PC segment lining, modification of TBM and other improvement, the excavation of the tunnel under severe groundwater condition was successfully completed.
An excavation damaged zone (EDZ) is created by fracturing, excavation or stress redistribution of tunnels. In this zone the mechanical and hydraulic properties of rock are changed, which makes additional cracks and serves as a dominant pathway of groundwater flow. In this study, an assessment on an EDZ size was practiced by the measurement of the deformation modulus at the KAERI underground research tunnel (KURT), and the information was applied to the modelling analysis using FLAC2D software. The EDZ at KURT fell into the range of 0.6~1.8m and the deformation moduli of the EDZ generally correspond to about 40% of intact rock mass. With a consideration of the EDZ in numerical analysis, tunnel displacements increased by about 65% and the maximum principal stress decreased to 58% from the case without EDZ. The plastic zone of the tunnel was enlarged to the crown and invert zones of the tunnel within the range of the length of rock bolts. About 2% of the total tunnel displacement with EDZ was suppressed by the KURT support system. It is anticipated that the investigation of an EDZ can be used as an important and fundamental research for validating the overall performance of a high level waste disposal system.

When planning to construct adjacent structure by the side tunnel, the criteria of safety zone of tunnel have been proposed. There are no specific theoretical basis regarding load conditions and the distance of structure and the geological strata and the conditions of adjacent structure's location, and the conditions applied load. Two and three dimensional numerical analysis preformed to prove the deformation of the ground and structures caused by the tunnel excavation and evaluated the correlation and the suitability of the tunnel's safety zone regarding the location of adjacent structures and the changes in the modulus of deformation. This paper proposed the safety zone's range is getting bigger as the modulus of deformation is higher. Also, it seems that the possible range of construction under constraints in the diagram of revalued safety zone significantly expands as shear failure line appears on the invert extension line below the spring line.

The protector with the shape of '${\sqcap}$' in cross section can be set up in the tunnel, which can be constructed for enlargement of cross section, to keep traffic flow in the tunnel. It is impossible to install the rockbolt in the side wall of tunnel due to a limited space between the protector and cutting surface of side wall. The objective of this study is to suggest the optimum thickness of shotcrete lining without rockbolt on the side wall and to evaluate the stability of tunnel enlarged. Numerical analysis was performed to evaluate the displacement at the center of tunnel, the convergence of tunnel, and the stress in shotcrete lining in 4-lane NATM road tunnel enlarged from 3-lane NATM road tunnel. The vertical displacement at the center of tunnel and the convergence of crown in the tunnel with rockbolt in the side wall were almost similar to those in the tunnel without rockbolt in the side wall. The convergence of bench/invert and the stress in shotcrete lining without rockbolt on the side wall were greater maximum 0.57 mm and 1,300 kN/$m^2$ than those with rockbolt in the side wall. The increased convergence and the stress in shotcrete lining can be reduced in incerasing of thickness of shotcrete lining about 20% (5 cm) of standard thickness, 25 cm, of shotcrete lining.

In urban areas, tunnelling induced ground deformations, particularly ground settlements should be considered in order to minimize the damage of adjacent structures. Therefore, an appropriate monitoring system for the tunnel construction should be setup at the planning or design stage. A number of studies on ground settlements due to tunnelling in soft ground have been carried out so far. However, most studies have focused on clay soil rather than sand soil. In particular, a few studies on behaviour of subsurface deformations in granular material have been reported. In this study, two-dimensional laboratory model test with aluminium rods regarded as continuum granular material and close range photogrammetric technique, and numerical analysis were carried out in order to identify the behaviour of subsurface deformations due to shallow tunnelling. Direction and magnitude of displacement vectors from the model test was identical to the numerical analysis. In particular, the vector direction was appeared to be toward a point below the tunnel invert level. A narrow 'chimney or tulip like' pattern of vertical displacement was confirmed by both the model test and numerical analysis. This is consistent with the field data. In addition to the qualitative comparison, the quantitative comparison of subsurface settlements according to 2D volume loss showed good agreement between the model test and numerical analysis. Therefore, close range photogrammetric technique applied in the model test may be used to validate the result from the continuum numerical analysis.
