  • The optimal design of multiple tuned mass dampers (multiple TMD's) to suppress multi-mode structural response of beams and floor structures was investigated. A new method using a numerical optimizer, which can effectively handle a large number of design variables, was employed to search for both optimal placement and tuning of TMD's for these structures under wide-band loading. The first design problem considered was vibration control of a simple beam using 10 TMD's. The results confirmed that for structures with widelyspaced natural frequencies, multiple TMD's can be adequately designed by treating each structural vibration mode as an equivalent SDOF system. Next, the control of a beam structure with two closely-spaced natural frequencies was investigated. The results showed that the most effective multiple TMD's have their natural frequencies distributed over a range covering the two controlled structural frequencies and have low damping ratios. Moreover, a single TMD can also be made effective in controlling two modes with closely spaced frequencies by a newly identified control mechanism, but the effectiveness can be greatly impaired when the loading position changes. Finally, a realistic problem of a large floor structure with 5 closely spaced frequencies was presented. The acceleration responses at 5 positions on the floor excited by 3 wide-band forces were simultaneously suppressed using 10 TMD's. The obtained multiple TMD's were shown to be very effective and robust.

  • The characteristics of antimony implants are relatively well-known. Antimony has lower diffusion coefficient, shorter implantation range, and smaller scattering as compared with conventional dopants such as phosphorous and arsenic. It has been commonly used in the doping of buried layer in Bi-CMOS process. In this paper, characteristics and appropriate condition of monitoring in antimony implant beam tuning using $Sb_2O_3$ were investigated to get a reliable process. TW(Thema Wave) and Rs(Sheet Resistance) test were carried out to set up condition of monitoring for stable operation through the periodic inspection of instruction condition. The monitoring was progressed at the point that the slant of Rs varied significantly to investigate the variation of instruction accurately.

  • This paper proposes a robust digital controller for PWM voltage source inverter using CRA method. The usual inverter controller for the operation of constant voltage and constant frequency consists of a double looped PI controller for the outer voltage controller and the inner current controller, of which the order of characteristic polynomial is high and so the gain tuning is difficult. Considering the limited switching frequency of the devices and sampling frequency of the digital controller, the gain tuning is usually based on the engineering experiences with the try and error method. In this paper, the error-space approach is used to get the system model including the controller with low order, and the characteristic ratio assignment (CRA) method is proposed for the design of robust controller which has the advantage to design the optimal gain to meet the referenced response and overshoot within the limit range. The PSiM simulation and experience results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed controller.

  • In this paper, we investigated the output polarization of a Lyot-type optical fiber comb filter based on a polarization-diversity loop structure. It was found that the output state of polarization (SOP) of the filter made a wavelength-dependent evolution, and the spectral periods of the output SOP variation in flat-top and lossy flat-top band modes were the channel separation of the filter and its half, respectively. For a certain input SOP, the filter could pass or reject specific spectral sections by adding and controlling an output analyzer. In particular, it was theoretically anticipated that the filter with the output polarizer could provide the fine continuous tuning of its pass band center in a wavelength range corresponding to the ${\pm}9.5%$ of channel spacing(0.8nm) when the input SOP was properly adjusted. It is expected that this tuning function can be effectively applied to suppress unwanted spectral portions in modulated optical signals.

  • Narrowing the spectral linewidth and improving the wavelength stability of high-power laser diodes (HPLDs) are both in high demand for rapidly maturing industrial laser applications. In this study, we investigate the spectral behavior of a commercial HPLD bar module composed of 19 laser diodes (LDs) in a single-layered bar with a built-in volume Bragg grating (VBG) and an additional cascaded VBG. Optical loss due to the extra cascaded VBG is kept below 5% when the optical output is 5 W or more. The full width at half maximum of the Fabry-Perot peak from the cascaded VBG is reduced to about 12.4% and 29.1% at the edge (1st LD) and center (10th LD) of the HPLD bar module respectively, compared to using only a built-in VBG at an optical power of 10 W or more. In addition, fine wavelength tuning is achieved by temperature control of the extra VBG, and the obtained wavelength-tuning range amounts to about 10.6 pm/K.

  • Novel class-A bipolar current conveyor($CCII{\pm}$) with differential current output and its application to output current controllable CCII+ for electronic tuning systems are designed. The $CCII{\pm}$ is consists of conventional CCII+ and complementary cross current sources. The CCII+ with controllable the output current consists of the $CCII{\pm}$ and a current gain amplifier with single-ended current output. The simulation result shows that the $CCII{\pm}$ has current input impedance of $1.9{\Omega}$ and a good linearity for voltage and current follower. The proposed CCII+ has 3-dB cutoff frequency of 10MHz for the range over bias control current $100{\mu}A$ to 10mA. The range of output current control is four decade. The power dissipation of the CCII+ is 4.5mW at supply voltage of ${\pm}2.5V$.

  • In this paper, with using the clapp type VCO(Voltage Controlled Osillator) configuration a wideband frequency synthesizer in UHF band is proposed. In order to design a wideband frequency synthesizer, the variation of phase in the negative resistance circuit as well as the load circuit was analyzed. Based on this result we propose a method to widen the operation range of the VCO. A frequency synthesizer using the proposed wideband VCO was designed and fabricated. It is shown that the synthesizer has the operating frequency range of 740~1,530 MHz by 0~5 V varactor tuning voltage, and it had the output power of 2~-6 dBm. Moreover, the phase noise measured as -77 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, and as -108 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset from the oscillation frequency.

  • In this paper, a VCHO(Voltage Controlled Harmonic Oscillator) for K-band application has been designed and implemented. The proposed oscillator has a structure of two hair-pin resonators placed on input and output of active device. Using in/out common frequency tuning structure, the VCHO yields some advantages of the enhanced fundamental frequency suppression characteristic as well as the improved output power of second harmonic. According to implementation and measurement results, it was shown that a VCHO provides an output power of -2.41 dBm, a fundamental frequency suppression of -21.84 dBc, and phase noise of -101.44 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. In addition, as for the bias voltage from 0 V to -10 V for the varactor diode, output frequency range of 10.58 MHz is obtained with a power variation of ${\pm}0.19\;dB$ over its frequency range.

  • MgO enhanced $(Ba_{0.6}Sr_{0.4})$ $TiO_3$ thick films have been fabricated by a tape casting and firing method for tunable devices on the microwave frequency band. In order to improve ferroelectric properties, the composite thick films enhanced with MgO on BST have been asymmetrically annealed by a focused halogen beam method. Dielectric constants of composite thick films are changed from 1050 to 1300 at 100 kHz after 60 s and 150 s annealing by the focused halogen beam. Even though no prominent changes were previously observed from the thick films before and after annealing in terms of chemical composition and surface morphology, it is clear that the average particle size of the thick films calculated by Scherrer's formula were increased by annealing. Furthermore, a strong correlation between particle size and dielectric constant of the composite thick films has been observed; dielectric constant increases with increased particle size. This has been attributed to the increased volume of ferroelectric domain due to increased particle sizes. As a result, the tuning range was improved by halogen beam annealing.

  • Design and syntheses of four red phosphorescent heteroleptic cationic iridium(III) complexes containing two substituted phenylquinoxaline (pqx) or benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-pyridin (btp) main ligands and one 2,2'-biimidazole (H2biim) ancillary ligand are reported: [$(pqx)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (1), [$(dmpqx)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (2), [$(dfpqx)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (3), [$(btp)_2$Ir(biim)]Cl (4). Complex 1 showed a distorted octahedral geometry around the iridium(III) metal ion with cis metallated carbons and trans nitrogen atoms. The absorption, emission and electrochemical properties were systematically evaluated. The complexes exhibited red phosphorescence in the spectral range of 580 to 620 nm with high quantum efficiencies of 0.58 - 0.78 in both solution and solid-state at room temperature depending on the cyclometalated main ligands. The cyclic voltammetry of the complexes (1-3) showed a metal-centered irreversible oxidation in the range of 1.40 to 1.90 V as well as two quasi reversible reduction waves from -1.15 to -1.45 V attributed to the sequential addition of two electrons to the more electron accepting heterocyclic portion of two distinctive cyclometalated main ligands, whereas complex 4 showed a reversible oxidation potential at 1.24 V and irreversible reduction waves at -1.80 V.
