  • A vibrating angular rate sensor with tuning fork type resonator of microstructure (940*820 .mu. m$^{2}$) was designed and will be fabricated by polysilicon surface micromaching. The angular rate sensor is driven in a lateral direction by electrostatic force of comb drive electrodes, and vertical vibrations of the sensor, thich is detected capacitively, are produced by Coriolis forces due to an external angular rate. Mechanical Q factors and a difference between the frequencies of the two resonant modes, the driving mode and detecting mode, play a great role in increasing the sensitivity of the sensor. To be a highly sensitive sensor, it was designed to have as small frequency discrepancy of the two resonant modes as possible. Finite element method was used for the modal analysis. Several design parameters were selected and their contributions to the modal frequencies were investigated. A method was presented for tuning the detecting mode frequency by DC bias on the drive electrodes.

  • This paper presents the implementation of wide-band RFIC amplifier operating from near 50MHz to 3GHz using Tachyonics SiGe HBT foundry. Voltage shunt feedback is used for the flat gain and the broad band impedance matching. Initial design parameters are calculated using the low frequency small signal analysis. Since the HBT model was not available at the design time, discrete tuning board was made for fine tuning in the low frequency range. Fabricated amplifier shows 12dB gain with 1dB fluctuation and PldB reaches 15dBm at 850MHz.

  • A reconfigurable multi-band mixer for the SDR system is proposed. The proposed reconfigurable mixer is operated between $850\;MHz{\sim}2\;GHz$, which includes all commercial mobile communication service. Because the varactor diodes are used to select a specific frequency and to adjust the impedance characteristic of the selected frequency band, the proposed reconfigurable mixer can be achieved to similar performance across all of the tuning range. In addition, the designed reconfigurable mixer is applicable for the SDR system since it has a single signal path for the multi-band signals and wide band tuning range.

  • The dynamic analysis of composite plate with embedded shape memory alloys (SMAs) is studied using the finite element method. Active frequency tuning of a composite plate under electrical heating of SMAs is analyzed. The actuation of SMAs is modeled by Brinson's one-dimensional constitutive equation. The influences of the boundary conditions, the ply orientations and the pre-strains of SMA wires on the thermo-dynamic response of composite plate are discussed. It is found that the effect of SMAs on the dynamic response of composite plate is significant.

  • We have developed a new non-conventional electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer, in which no resonant cavity was used. We previously demonstrated a wide frequency range operation of an EPR spectrometer using two loop antennas, one for a microwave transmission and the other for signal detection [1]. In contrast to Ref. [1], the utilization of a microstrip antenna as a transmitter enhanced a capability of wide-band operation. The replacement of conventional capacitors with varactor diodes makes resonance condition easily reproducible without any mechanical action during tuning and matching procedure since the capacitance of the diodes is controlled electronically. The operation of the new EPR spectrometer was tested by measuring a signal of 1,1-diphenil-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) sample in the frequency range of 0.8-2.5 GHz.

  • In this work, a phase shifter radio-frequency integrated chip (RFIC) using a simple all-pass network is presented. As a tuning element of the phase shifter RFIC, tunable capacitors with a multi-layer dielectric of a para-/ferro-/para-electrics using a high tunable BST ferroelectric and a low-loss BZN paraelectric thin film were utilized. In order to evaluate and analyze the fabricated phase shifter RFIC, the same elements such as an inductor and capacitor integrated into it are also fabricated and tested. The designed phase shifter RFIC was fabricated on a quartz substrate in the size of $1.16{\times}1.21mm^2$. As the test results, the maximum phase difference of $350^{\circ}$ is obtained at 15 V and its tuning frequency bandwidth is 90 MHz from 2.72 to 2.81GHz.

  • Parameter tuning methods by Ziegler-Nichols for PID controllers are generally classified into Z-N(1) and Z-N(2). The purpose of this paper is to describe what relations exist between the methods of Z-N(1) and Z-N(2), or how Z-N(1) can be originated from Z-N(2) by analyzing one loop control system composing of P or PI controller and time delay process. In this paper, for the first step to seek mutual relations, the simple formulas of Z-N(2) are transformed into those composing of the same parameters as Z-N(1) which is derived from the analysis of frequency characteristics. Then, the approximation of the actual ultimate frequency is proposed as important premise in the translation between Z-N(1) and (2). Such equalization and approximation brings a simple approximated formula which can explain how Z-N(1) is originated from the Z-N(2) in the form of formula.

  • This special issue focuses on Smart Tuned Mass Dampers (STMD) that are either active or smart or semi-active in nature. Active tuned mass dampers or active mass dampers have found wide acceptance and have been implemented in many tall buildings and long span bridges. Recently researchers have developed a new class of smart tuned mass dampers using either variable stiffness and/or variable damping to effect the change in instantaneous frequency and damping. Since tuning plays a central role in STMDs it is of great current interest thus the topic of this special issue. Discussions of recent active and smart TMD implementations in tall buildings and bridges are also included.
