  • In general, magnetic abrasive polishing can be used to effectively produce a mirror-like surface; however, industrial applications of this process involve some unsolved problems. For example, the polishing efficiency is low, and the used abrasives have to be treated. In this study, which is aimed at solving these problems, a novel medium of silicone gel, consisting of ferromagnetic particles and abrasives, is developed, and the effect of this medium is assessed on the basis of Taguchi's experimental method. The workpiece is a tungsten carbide steel and the surface roughness after magnetic abrasive polishing using the silicone gel is evaluated.

  • We report a novel method to synthesize nanocomposites composed of titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions with various composition ratios ranging from W/Ti = 12/10 to 12/500 by inducing the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged protonated titania sol-particles and the negatively charged phosphotungstate anions to flocculate and precipitate. The precipitates showed varied features depending on the composition. The precipitate from the tungsten-richest W/Ti = 12/10 reaction is amorphous in its powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy data. This material shows the Type II adsorption characteristics in its N2-adsorption isotherm, but with quite low surface area of 34 m2/g. To the contrary, the precipitates from the titanium-richer reactions (W/Ti = 12/50- 12/500) are composed of anatase nanoparticles of 2-6 nm by XRD, TEM and Raman and show the Type I adsorption characteristics. The surface area linearly increases with the titanium content from 131 m2/g for W/ Ti = 12/50 to 228 m2/g for 12/500. The precipitate from the reaction with the intermediate composition W/Ti = 12/20 is composed of anatase nanoparticles and does not have any pore accessible to N2. With the wide variety of the physical properties of the precipitates, the present method can be a novel, viable means to tailor synthesis of nanocomposite materials. A formation mechanism of the precipitates is based on the electrostatic interactions between the titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions.

  • Currently, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been proven of their readiness for commercialization in terms of lifetime and efficiency. In accordance with emerging new technologies, enhancement of light efficiency and extension of application fields are required. Particularly inverted structures, in which electron injection occurs at bottom and hole injection on top, show crucial advantages due to their easy integration with Si-based driving circuits for active matrix OLED as well as large open area for brighter illumination. In order to get better performance and process reliability, usually a proper buffer layer for carrier injection is needed. In inverted top emission OLED, the buffer layer should protect underlying organic materials against destructive particles during the electrode deposition, in addition to increasing their efficiency by reducing carrier injection barrier. For hole injection layers, there are several requirements for the buffer layer, such as high transparency, high work function, and reasonable electrical conductivity. As a buffer material, a few kinds of transition metal oxides for inverted OLED applications have been successfully utilized aiming at efficient hole injection properties. Among them, we chose 2 nm of $WO_3$ between NPB [N,N'-bis(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine] and Au (or Al) films. The interfacial energy-level alignment and chemical reaction as a function of film coverage have been measured by using in-situ ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It turned out that the $WO_3$ interlayer substantially reduces the hole injection barrier irrespective of the kind of electrode metals. It also avoids direct chemical interaction between NPB and metal atoms. This observation clearly validates the use of $WO_3$ interlayer as hole injection for inverted OLED applications.

  • Herein a rich, Se-nanoparticle modified Mo-W18O49 nanocomposite as efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst is reported via hydrothermal synthesized process. In this work, Na2SeSO3 solution and selenium powder are used as Se precursor material. The structure and composition of the nanocomposites are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), EDX spectrum analysis and the corresponding element mapping. The improved electrochemical properties are studied by current density, and EIS analysis. The as-prepared Se modified Mo-W18O49 synthesized via Na2SeSO3 is investigated by FE-SEM analysis and found to exhibit spherical particles combined with nanosheets. This special morphology effectively improves the charge separation and transfer efficiency, resulting in enhanced photoelectric behavior compared with that of pure Mo-W18O49. The nanomaterial obtained via Na2SeSO3 solution demonstrates a high HER activity and low overpotential of -0.34 V, allowing it to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2.

  • Copper (Cu) had been attractive material due to its superior properties comparing to other metals such as aluminum or tungsten and considered as the best metal which can replace them as an interconnect metal in integrated circuits. CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) technology enabled the production of excellent local and global planarization of microelectronic materials, which allow high resolution of photolithography process. Cu CMP is a complex removal process performed by chemical reaction and mechanical abrasion, which can make defects of its own such as a scratch, particle and dishing. The abrasive particles remain on the Cu surface, and become contaminations to make device yield and performance deteriorate. To remove the particle, buffing cleaning method used in post-CMP cleaning and buffing is the one of the most effective physical cleaning process. AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor was used to detect dynamic friction during the buffing process. When polishing is started, the sensor starts to be loaded and produces an electrical charge that is directly proportional to the applied force. Cleaning efficiency of Cu surface were measured by FE-SEM and AFM during the buffing process. The experimental result showed that particles removed with buffing process, it is possible to detect the particle removal efficiency through obtained signal by the AE sensor.

  • In this report, several factors such as infection time and concentration of bacterial suspension, influencing on transient gene expression in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation were evaluated. An appropriate concentration (O.D 600nm = 1.0-1.2) of bateria and 30 min of infection time showed a higher level of GUS expression. To improve transformation efficiency (TE), friable embryogenic calli (FEC) were bombarded by tungsten particles without plasmid DNA, and then co-cultivated with A. tumefaciens LBA4404 which contains pTOK233 super binary vector, carrying neomycin phosphotransferase (NPTII), hygromycin phosphotransferase (hpt) and$\beta-glucuronidase$ (GUS) genes. Three days after co-cultivation with A. tumefaciens and particle bombardment, FEC cultures were transferred to the selection medium (SM: MS medium supplemented with BA 1mg/l, hygromycin 100mg/l, cefotaxime 250 mg/l and vancomycin 200mg/l). They were cultured for 2 weeks and then transferred to the second SM containing hygromycin 50mg/l, cefotaxime 200 mg/l and vancomycin 100mg/l. Later, stable GUS expression was detected 4 to 6 weeks after transfer to the SM. Further, TE from Agrobacterium-mediated transformation after particle bombardment increased to about 3-folds compared with Agrobacterium-mediated transformation without particle bombardment. In the present study, we established an efficient transformation protocol of zoysiagrass by using A. tumefaciens in the combination with particle bombardment for the first time.
