The cyclic behavior of steel-polyoxymethylene composite braces

  • Steel tubular buckling controlled braces are well known as being simple, practical and cost-effective lateral force resisting systems. Although these system features have gained the attention of the researchers over the last decade, steel tubular buckling controlled braces currently have limited application. Indeed, only a few steel tubes tightly encased within each other exist in the steel industry. In this paper, a new and practical design method is proposed in order to better promote the widespeared application for current steel tubular buckling controlled brace applications. In order to reach this goal, a holed-adapter made with polyoxymethylene adaptable to all round and square steel sections, was developed to use as infiller. The research program presents designing, producing and displacement controlled cyclic loading tests of a conventional tubular brace and a buckling controlled composite brace. In addition, numerical analysis was carried out to compare the experimental results. As a result of the experimental studies, buckling was controlled up to 0.88 % drift ratio and the energy dissipation capacity of the conventional tubular brace increased 1.46 times due to the proposed design. The main conclusion of this research is that polyoxymethylene is a highly suitable material for the production of steel tubular buckling controlled braces.

  • This paper describes the optimal design, construction and performance evaluation of coaxial shunts used in high current testing laboratory for current measuring system. These shunts, which are of tubular type coaxial shunts, the currents to be measured range from Amperes to several kiloAmperes, and the frequency of the signals has a bandwidth from DC to megaHertz. The shunt must have the mechanical strength to support the forces produced by the transient current, above all, the measuring capabilities of shunt are dependent upon short response time and it must be as free as possible of inductive effects. In this paper presents both characteristic of shunt and design of tubular type coaxial shunt.

Advanced Water Treatment by Tubular Alumina Ceramic Ultrafiltration: Effect of Periodic Water-back-flushing Period

  • The periodic water-back-flushing using permeate water was performed to minimize membrane fouling and to enhance permeate flux in tubular ceramic ultrafiltration (UF) system for Gongji stream water treatment in Chuncheon city. The filtration time (FT), which was the water-back-flushing period, 2 min with periodic 15 sec water-back-flushing showed the highest value of dimensionless permeate flux ($J/J_o$), and the lowest value of resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), and we acquired the highest total permeate volume ($V_T$) of 6.35 L. Consequently FT 2 min at back-flushing time (BT) 15 sec could be the optimal condition in advanced UF water treatment of Gongji stream. Then the average rejection rates of pollutants by our tubular ceramic UF system were 99.4% for Turbidity, 31.8% for $COD_{Mn}$, 22.6% for $NH_3$-N and 65.9% for T-P.

진공관형 태양열 집열장치의 성능평가 및 해석 연구 (Study on Analysis and Evaluation of Performance for Evacuated Tubular Solar Collector System)

  • 태양열 에너지는 우리나라의 전체 에너지에서 차지하는 비율은 아직 미미하지만, 근래 이 분야에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 외부 날씨의 영향을 받지 않고 실내에서 안정적으로 태양열집열기에 관한 실험을 수행할 수 있는 태양열집열기 성능검사 시스템을 구축하고 새로운 형태의 태양열집열기를 연구 개발하기 위한 기초자료를 얻는데 있다. 이를 위해 태양열집열기 성능검사 시스템에 대한 CATIA 설계 및 제작을 거쳐 성능검사를 실시하였으며, 본 시스템에 장착된 이중진공관 집열기에 대한 수치해석을 수행하였다. 실험 결과 태양열집열기 성능검사 시스템의 설정온도차(${\Delta}T$)의 증가에 따라 작동회수는 감소하지만 총 작동시간은 모든 경우에 거의 동일함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 수치해석 결과 태양열흡수부의 온도가 높을수록 집열기 중심에서의 온도 감소율이 증가하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

서식수의 염분농도에 따른 guppy(Poecilia reticulutus) (Ultrastructural Changes of Chloride Cells of the Guppy (Poecilia reticulatus) Gill according to the Environmental Salinity)

  • 서식수 염분농도의 변화에 따른 guppy(Poecilia reticulotus) 아가미 상피내 염소세포(chloride cell)의 미세구조적 변화를 전자현미경으로 관찰하고, 특히 증가하는 염분농도에 따라 주요변화를 보여주는 염소세포내 미토콘드리아와 tubular system의 면적을 영상 분석기로 측정하여 다음의 결과를 얻었다. 염소세포는 주로 guppy 아가미궁의 일차 총판상피에 위치하는데 담수에서는 하나씩 독립적으로 존재하며 자유면이 apical pit를 형성하여 외부환경에 노출되는 반면. 서식수의 염분농도가 증가하면 여러개의 염소세포들이 다세포복합체를 형성하고 이 세포들의 자유면이 함께 하나의 apical pit를 구성하게 된다. 서식수의 염분농도가 증가함에 따라 염소세포내의 미토콘드리아와 tubular system은 점점 더 조밀하게 분포하는 것으로 관찰되었다 염소세포의 단위면적당 미토콘드리아가 차지하는 면적은 서식수가 담수(0%의 염분농도)인 경우는 24$\pm$5%였고, 1%에서는 26$\pm$5%, 2%에서는 33$\pm$7% 그리고 해수(3.2% 염분농도)에 적응된 경우는 42$\pm$7%로 담수환경의 것과 비교하여 약 18%까지 증가하였다 또한 염소세포의 측면과 기저측 세포막 함입의 결과로 형성되는 tubular system은 세포의 단위면적당 차지하는 면적이 담수에 적응된 개체들에서 38$\pm$9%였고 서식환경의 염분농도에 따라 점차 증가하다가 해수에서는 61$\pm$9%로 약 16%까지 높아졌다.

태양열 실증시스템의 진공관형 태양열 집열기 장기 열성능 (Long-term thermal performance of evacuated tubular solar collector for demonstration system)

  • This paper presents demonstration study results derived through field testing of a part load solar energized cooling system for the library of a cultural center building located in Gwangju, Korea. First operating demonstration system was set up in Gwangju in 2005. These system comprises the $200m^2$ evacuated tubular solar collector, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank. In a 2006, daily average of insolation showed about $506W/m^2$, the solar collector efficiency was 44%. In a 2007, daily average of insolation showed about$507W/m^2$, the solar collector efficiency was 42%. As a result, evacuated tubular solar collector kept the high efficiency for two years.

On-off Dewatering Control for Lipase-catalyzed Synthesis of n-Butyl Oleate in n-Hexane by Tubular Type Pervaporation System

  • Lipase-catalyzed esterification of n-butyl oleate was carried out in n-hexane as a model reaction. The optimal activity of Candida rugosa lipase was shown in a water activity ($a_w$) range of 0.52 to 0.65 at $30^{\circ}C$. The water produced from the esterification was removed by a tubular type pervaporation system. The rate of ester formed from the enzymatic esterification was allowed to be the same as the rate of water removal by maintaining an optimal $a_w$ of the reaction system using an on-off dewatering control device. The reaction rate and yield with a$a_w$ control were increased two folds higher than the respective values for the uncontrolled reaction.

  • This study optimises the no-load voltage waveform of tubular hydro-generators by a simple design scheme. For different centerlines of the pole shoe and damper bar, the optimisation effects on the no-load voltage waveform are investigated in two tubular hydro-generators with different weighted powers (34 MW and 18 MW). The results are compared with those of the traditional stator-slots skewed design. The quality of the no-load voltage waveform was related to the shifting degree, and the different optimisation effects between the integer slot generator (q = 2) and the fractional slot generator (q = 11/2) were analysed. This research can improve the quality of the power output and no-load voltage waveform, and provide an effective reference for improving the industrial design and manufacture level of tubular hydro-generators.

  • This paper presents a multi-scale hybrid simulation for the design of a catalytic multi-tubular reactor with high performance. The multi-tubular reactor consists of shell and a large number of tubes in which various catalytic chemical reactions occur. To consider fluid dynamics in the shell-side and kinetics in the tube-side at the same time, commercial CFD package and process simulation tool are coupled. This hybrid approach allowed us to predict many kinds of meaningful results such as tube center temperature profile, heat transfer coefficients on the tube wall, temperature rise of cooling medium, pressure drop through shell and tube side, concentration profile of each chemical species along the tube, and so on., and to achieve the optimal reactor design.
