In this study, the $CO_2$ removal characteristics of the Vortex tube type absorbtion apparatus were investigated to enhance the compactness of $CO_2$ absorption process and to reduce the amount of absorbing solution of the $CO_2$ separation process. The Vortex tube with the diameter of 17 mm and the length of 250mm was introduced in the experimental apparatus to treat $20Nm^3/hr$ of $CO_2$ containing flue gas. The flue gases for experiments containing 11~13 vol% of $CO_2$ were supplied from the coal-firing CFBC power plant with 12 ton/hr of steam producing capacity. The mixed solutions of 20 wt% of MEA as base solution with the adding solutions like HMDA, AMP and KOH were used as absorbents. The experiments were executed under the various conditions like the absorbing solution concentrations in the range of 20 to 50 wt%, the flow rate of $CO_2$ containing flue gases in the range of 6 to $15Nm^3/hr$ and the flow rate of absorbing solution in the range of 1.0 to 3.0 l/min. As a results, the $CO_2$ removal efficiency of mixed absorbent of 20 wt% of MEA with HMDA was remarkable. From this study, we concluded that the efficient separation of $CO_2$ from flue gases using the features of the Vortex tube type absorbing unit for gas/liquid contact and the separation of gas/liquid be possible. But more works are needed to increase the $CO_2$ removal efficiency of Vortex tube process.
This is an experimental work concerning about an application of a heat pipe to an evacuated-glass-tube solar collector system. A methanol heat pipe with length of 0.7 m and diameter of 8 mm was manufactured and tested to compare its performance with that of freon thermosyphon which was originally used in a solar collector system fabricated at Thermomax Co.. Then this methanol heat pipe was utilized to be one component, i.e. heat transfer element, of the present experimental model of a solar collector. This model was performed the operation test as its absorber plate was irradiated by infrared lamps. The following results were obtained. (1) The methanol heat pipe was showed a stable operation when the variation of axial heat transport was $0{\sim}40$ watts and that of inclination angle was $30{\sim}90^{\circ}$. (2) The heat transport capability of the heat pipe was proved to be higher than that of the thermosyphon, because the heat transport limitation of the latter was occured at about 30 watt. (3) The heat pipe in a solar collector was also showed good performance as it transmitted absorbed energy.
In this study, the first law of thermodynamics was used to establish a one-dimensional (1-D) thermal model for parabolic trough receiver (PTR) taking into account the pressure drop and kinetic energy loss effects of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flowing inside the absorber tube. The validation of the thermal model with data from the SEGS-LS2 solar collector-test showed a good agreement, which is consistent with the previously established models for the conventional straight and smooth (CSS) receiver where the effects of pressure drop and kinetic energy loss were neglected. Based on the developed model and code, a comparative study of the newly designed parabolic trough S-curved receiver versus the CSS receiver was conducted and solar unit's performances were analyzed. Without any supplementary devices, the S-curved receiver enhances the performance of the parabolic trough module, with a maximum of 0.16% compared to CSS receiver with the same sizes and mass flow rates. Thermal losses were reduced by 7% due to the decrease in the temperature of the outer surface of the receiver tube. In addition, it has been shown that from a mass flow rate of 9.5 kg/s the heat losses of the S-curved receiver remain unchanged despite the improvement in the heat transfer rate.

Two basic acoustic quantities, the characteristic impedances and the propagation constants, of the two different ultra lightweight concrete absorbers were examined with impedance tube method. A transmission loss was tested and compared with theoretical values. The results show that these kinds of sample have proper sound absorption and transmission loss capabilities. It means that they can be used in various fields where noise proof is needed.

The present study investigated experimentally and numerically the enhancement of absorption performance due to the waviness of falling film in the vertical absorber tube. The momentum, energy and mass diffusion equations were utilized to find out temperature and concentration profiles at both the interfaces of liquid solution and refrigerant vapor and the wall. Flow visualization was performed to find out the wetting characteristics of the falling film. The maximum heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the wavy flow using spring as an insert device through both numerical and experimental studies. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the maximum absorption rate was found for the wavy-flow using spring as the insert device. The differences between experimental and analytical results ranged from $5.0\;to\;25\%\;when\;Re_j>100$.

Ecological lightweight aggregates were made by using the wastes come from various industrial fields. Wastes were crushed and pulverized by mills and a certain portions of wastes were mixed and formed by pelletizer like small beads. The formed lightweight aggregates were finally sintered with $1125^{\circ}C$/15 min conditions by using rotary kiln. Lightweight concrete sound absorbers were made of ecological lightweight aggregates K73 (Coal bottom ash 70 wt%: Dredged soil 30 wt%) and K631 (Clay 60 wt%: Stone sludge 30 wt%: Spent bleaching clay 10 wt%). For the reference, lightweight concrete sound absorbers made of DL (German made 'L' company LWA) were also made under the same conditions. Sound absorption characteristics were observed and measured according to the kinds of aggregates, water/cement ratio (W/C=20, 25, and 30%), and designed pore rates (V=20, 25, and 30%). The pore rates of the lightweight concrete sound absorber were turned out to be 5 to 10% higher than designed ones. Absorption coefficient of the lightweight concrete sound absorber by using K631 aggregates with W/C=20% and V=25% conditions was 0.88 at 1000 and 3150 Hz from the measurement by the impedance tube.
In this paper, we have studied the complex permittivities and their influence on the design of microwave absorbers of E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing three different types of carbon-based nano conductive fillers such as carbon black (CB), carbon nano fiber (CNF) and multi-wall nano tube (MWNT). The measurements were performed fur permittivities at the frequency band of 0.5 GHz$\sim$18.0 GHz using a vector network analyzer with a 7 mm coaxial air line. The experimental results show that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the conductive fillers. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivities of the composites were proportional to the filler concentrations. But, depending on the types of fillers and frequency band, the increasing rates of the real and imaginary parts with respect to the filler concentrations were all different. These different rates can have an effect on the thickness in designing the single layer microwave absorbers. The effect of the different rates at 10 GHz was examined by using Cole-Cole plot; the plot is composed of a single layer absorber solution line and measured permittivities from these three types of composites. Single layer absorbers of 3 different thicknesses using carbon nano materials were fabricated and the -10 dB band of absorbing performances were all about 3 GHz.

This study examined the problems of existing vehicles to propose alternatives to improve the crashworthiness of railway freight cars through collision acceleration analysis using a one-dimensional collision analysis method. A collision scenario of railway shunting and crash accidents was selected from the collision accident cases and international standards. A one-dimensional collision simulation using LS-DYNA was performed according to those scenarios. As a result, the acceleration level of the freight wagon was calculated to be under 2g and was predicted to meet the EN 12663 standard in the shunting situation. On the other hand, the result of crash simulation with an impact velocity between 10 and 15 km/h revealed the shock absorber capacity of the railway coupler to be insufficient in a crash situation, resulting in increased acceleration, and carbody deformation could be predicted. As a method of improving the crashworthiness, a deformation tube-type energy absorber was applied to the coupler system, and collision analysis was performed again with new energy absorption strategy. Overall, the simulation showed that the acceleration level was decreased by 12% of the conventional freight-car energy absorption system.

Among the heat/mass exchange units composing an absorption system, the absorber, where the refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the liquid solution is the one least understood. In the present study, the effects of non-absorbable gas on the absorption process of aqueous lithium bromide solution falling film inside a vertical tube were experimentally investigated. In the range of film Reynolds number of 30 ~ 195, heat and mass transfer characteristics were investigated as a function of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration, 0.2 ~ 20%. An increase of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration degraded the mass transfer rate dramatically in the absorption process. The reduction of mass transfer rate was significant for the addition of small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor. At film Reynolds number of 130, an increase of non-absorbable gas concentration from 0.2 to 6.0% resulted in the decrease of mass transfer rate by 36% and 20% of non-absorbable gas by 59%. However the decrease of film Nusselt number with the increase of volumetric concentration of non absorbable gas was relatively smaller than the decrease of Sherwood number. Critical film Reynolds number was identified to exist for the maximum heat and mass transfer regardless of the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gases.
A dynamic model has been developed to simulate dynamic operation of a real double-effect absorption chiller. Dynamic behavior of working fluids in main components was modeled in first-order nonlinear differential equations based on heat and mass balances. Mass transport mechanisms among the main components were modeled by valve throttling, 'U' tube overflow and solution sub-cooling. The nonlinear dynamic equations coupled with the subroutines to calculate thermodynamic properties of working fluids were solved by a numerical method. The dynamic performance of the model was compared with the test data of a commercial medium chiller. The model showed a good agreement with the test data except for the first 5,000 seconds during which different flow rates of the weak solution caused some discrepancy. It was found that the chiller dynamics is governed by the inlet temperatures of the cooling water and the chilled water when the heat input to the chiller is relatively constant.
