Experimental Study on Fretting Wear of Inconel 690 Under High Temperatures and Pressures (고온 고압 환경에서 인코넬 690 재료의 프레팅 마모 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In a nuclear power plant, fretting wear due to impact motion between U-tubes and support structures located in steam generators can cause serious problems. In order to guarantee the reliability of the steam generator, the damage due to fretting wear should be thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the fretting wear mechanism qualitatively and quantitatively. Hence, fretting wear simulation is performed for the environments to which the actual steam generators in nuclear power plants are exposed. Initial experimental results are obtained for various experimental parameters, and the effect of the work rate and temperature on fretting wear is evaluated. In water, the wear coefficients for $90^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $340^{\circ}C$ are found to be $9.051{\times}10^{-16}\;Pa^{-1}$, $3.009{\times}10^{-15}\;Pa^{-1}$, and $2.235{\times}10^{-15}\;Pa^{-1}$, respectively. It is also found that the wear coefficient at room temperature is larger than that at low temperature in water because of the dynamic viscosity of water.

Numerical Analysis of Added Mass Coefficient for Outer Tubes of Tube Bundle in a Circular Cylindrical Shell (원통 내부에 배열된 외곽 전열관의 유체 부가질량계수 해석)

  • According to the wear detection history for the steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plant, the outer tubes inside the steam generator have more problems on the flow-induced vibration than inner tubes. Many researchers and engineers have used a specified added mass coefficient for a given tube array during the design stage of the steam generator even though the coefficient is not constant for entire tube in cylindrical shell. The aim of this study is to find out the distribution of added mass coefficients for each tube along the radial location. When numbers of tubes inside a cylindrical shell are increased, values of added mass coefficients are also increased. Added mass coefficients at outer tubes are less than those of inner tubes and they are decreased with increasing the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell. It also turns out when the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell approaches infinite value, the added mass coefficient converges to an asymptotic value of given tube array in a free fluid field.

Tribological performance of UHMWPE reinforced with carbon nanotubes in bovine serum

  • Although the factors that cause the failure of orthopedic implants were not clearly determined, it was reported that the shapes of wear debris affect the tribological behavior of artificial implant. Many researches were conducted to examine the wear mechanism by debris but the role of debris shape in inflammatory reaction remains unclear. To observe the debris shape by addition of reinforcement, carbon nanotubes ( CNTs ) were added to ultra high molecular weight polyethylene ( UHMWPE ) to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNTs. CNTs which have a diameter of about 10-50 nm, while their length is about 3-5 nm were produced by the catalytic decomposition of the acetylene gas using a tube furnace. Plate on disc type wear test were performed to evaluate the tribological performance of UHMWPE composites reinforced with CNTs in lubricating condition ( bovine serum ). The wear losses of CNT added UHMWPE in bovine serum were significantly reduced. Worn surface and wear debris of UHMWPE with CNTs and without CNTs were compared to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNT on tribological behavior.

Flow-induced Vibration Time Response Analysis of Loosely Supported Multi-Span Tube using Commercial FEA Code (지지점 간극을 갖는 다점지지 유연관의 유동하중에 의한 시간응답 이력해석과 상용유한요소 해석코드의 적용)

  • Time domain response analysis for vibro-impact nonlinear behavior of multi-span tube with loose supports was performed using commercial FEA code and user subroutine. Support geometry of multi-span tube with a finite gap is realistically modeled by analytical rigid surface. Model of hydrodynamic force is based on the Qusai-steady model which accounts for the inclined angle of relative flow velocity and time delay between flow force and resulting tube motion. During tube vibration from flow loading, impact and friction at the support location is simulated using commercial FEA code with master slave contact algorithm. Analysis results has reasonable agreement with those of references and test experience. Plan of further refinement of analysis model and future test verification is briefly introduced.

  • If a plugged tube in a steam generator is broken, it may damage nearby intact tubes. To prevent this damage, it is recommended that a stabilizer is installed into the plugged tube. However, the installation cost of a stabilizer is very high. So studies are required to determine the conditions on which the installation is necessary. For this purpose static loads and dynamic loads applied on a tube should be known to estimate the residual strength and remaining fatigue and wear life of a plugged tube. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are performed to obtain the drag coefficient for cross flow to a tube. Using the obtained drag coefficient, the static load can be estimated and the residual strength of a plugged tube can be calculated. An inclined flow problem is also analyzed and the vertical and horizontal forces are obtained and discussed.

3-D Finite Element Analyses of Steam Generator Tubes Considering the Gap Effects (간극효과를 고려한 증기발생기 전열관의 3차원 유한요소해석)

  • Steam generator is one of the main equipments that affect safety and long term operation in nuclear power plants. Fluid flows inside and outside of the steam generator tubes and induces vibration. To prevent the vibration the tubes are supported by AVB (anti vibration bar). When the steam generator tube contact to AVB, it is damaged by the accumulation of wear and corrosion. Therefore studies are required to determine the effects of the gap between the steam generator tube and AVB. In order to obtain the stress and the displacement distributions of the steam generator tube, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed by using the commercial program ANSYS. Using the calculated the stress and the displacement distributions, the static residual strength of the steam generator tube can be evaluated. The results show that the stress and displacement of the steam generator tube increase significantly compared with the results from a zero-gap model.

The Integrity Verification of Tube-end Sleeve by ECT (와전류탐상검사에 의한 튜브엔드 슬리브 건전성 검증)

  • Steam generator(S/G) tubes in pressurized water reactor (PWR's) are subject to several types of degradation. This degradation includes denting, pitting, intergranular attack(IGA), intergranular stress corrosion cracking(IGSCC), fatigue, fretting and wear. Degradation can be derived from either the primary side(inside) or the secondary side(outside) of the tube. Recent issue for tube degradation in domestic steam generator is the tube end cracking on seal weld region. The seal weld region at the tube end and tube itself is regarded as a pressure boundary between the primary side and the secondary side. One of the Westinghouse Model-F S/G has experienced tube end cracking and its number of plugging approximately becomes to the operating limit up to 5% due to tube end cracking which was reported as SAI/MAI(single/multiple axial indication) or SCI/MCI(Single/multiple circumferential indication) from the results of eddy current testing. Eddy current mock-up test was carried out to determine the origin of cracking whether it is from weld zone area or parent tube. This result was helpful to analyze crack location on ECT data. Correct action on this problem was the installation of tube-end sleeve. Last year, after removing 340 installed plugs from tubes, selected 269 tubes took tube-end sleeve installation. Tube-end sleeve brought pressure boundary from parent tube to installed sleeve tube. Tube-end sleeve has the benefit of reducing outage period and increasing more revenue than replacing S/G. This paper is provided to assist interest parties in effectively understanding this issue.

  • A Go-go-kwan is a particular hat which has worn by married woman in Mongol and Yuan dynasty in China. It is also widely called as a Boktak in Mongol. The Go-go-kwan, recorded in jip-sa and in the miniature painting of 14th century is the early type of go-go-kwan. Later type can be seen from the relic collections of Gyeonggi Provincial Museum in Korea. The Go-go-kwan is composed with three parts ; feather part, tube part and hat part. Among the feathers, the largest one is as long as four times of the length of the tube and the shortest one is half the length of the tube. The tube is made of light weight wood such as white birch or bamboo, and covered with silk. Some of the hats were made exactly to fit on the head whereas others were designed to wear on the head as like jobawi.

  • Most of the operating pressurized water reactors (PWRs)has chosen Inconel 600 as steam generator tubing. The long-term operation of steam generators showed that the use of this material induced localized corrosion damages. The current trend is using Inconel 690 as a tube material for the replacement steam generators. Based on the current trend, we have chosen Inconel 690 for the advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) steam generator tube material.   • This case covers the issues related to the operation problem, cause analysis and improvement cases of the FGD that employed the non-leakage type GGH in coal-fired power plant for the first time in Korea. In the Cooler, there was a main problem that the tube is damaged by the ash cutting due to the high velocity of flue gas in the duct and by the weak wear resistance of material. In the Reheater, there was a main problem that the tube was corroded due to chlorine and sulfur in the circumstance of the low temperature. In order to solve those problems, we have improved the Reheater tube and tube fins by coating enamel to reduce corrosion rate.
