  • The cooperation and trust among the project participants play a critical role in the success or failure of any delivery system in construction industry. But it is very difficult to establish trust between an owner and a contractor when rational people only pursue only their own material self-interest. Based on the principal-agent theory, this paper will introduce the altruistic behavior into the traditional principal-agent model, and model the reciprocal behavior between the owner and contractor. We will show that both the owner and the contractor benefit from their reciprocal behavior, and hence trust establishing between them is possible. More importantly, we will proof that the higher the project uncertainty is, the more important trust establishing is.

  • Other-regarding preferences (such as trust, reciprocity and altruism) between companies, between consumers and retailers, and between employers and employees are integral elements in determining economic performance. Social trust which is a core element of social capital, especially, is known to reduce transaction costs, help solve collective action problems, and contribute to economic, social, and political development. Therefore, social trust has been given a great deal of attention across an array of academic disciplines for its role in promoting cooperation among individuals and groups, and for its positive influence on economic performance. Most studies describe Korea as a low-trust society than Japan or China. To identify the causes of social trust, this paper focuses on differences of social values (perception on competition and wealth accumulation) in 4 countries (Japan, China, Korea, and United States). Based on World Values Survey data, this paper analyzes effects of the social values on social trust. Social trust was measured by degree to which a respondent thinks that most people can be trusted. Perception on competition was measured by the degree to which a respondent thinks that competition is harmful, and perception on wealth accumulation was done by the degree to which a respondent thinks that wealth can grow so there is enough for everyone. The results showed that social trust was affected by perception on competition and wealth accumulation. A respondent showed higher level of social trust when he (or she) perceived positively competition and wealth accumulation. For enhancing social trust in a country, it is not easy to reduce income inequality and corruption which were reported as causes of social trust by previous studies. Compared to them, social values can be changed more easily by various concrete measures like education and mass-media. Differently from previous studies this paper stresses the concrete measures to enhance social trust in a country.

  • Purpose: In the restaurant sector, it has been known that consumers' positive perception of brands influences their positive WOM intention, and information sources play an important role in increasing credibility by enhancing consumer awareness and developing differentiated brands. This study examines the effects of information sources (e.g., advertisement, WOM, SNS) on trust (cognitive and affective) and, WOM and eWOM intention in the restaurant context. In the model, cognitive and affective trust play mediating roles in the relationships between information sources (e.g., advertisement, WOM, SNS) WOM and eWOM intention. Research design, data, and methodology: Research models and hypotheses were developed according to the research direction. The survey questionnaire items were developed and used appropriately according to the contents of this paper based on prior studies. All constructs were measured with multiple items developed and validated in prior studies. A total of 502 responses were collected from an online survey. The research model was evaluated using SmartPLS 4.0. Frequency analysis was performed to understand the demographic characteristics of the survey respondents. The reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity were assessed using measurement model analysis. The proposed model was verified using the structural equation model. Results: Advertisement, WOM, and SNS information sources all had a positive effect on affective trust, whereas only WOM had a significant effect on cognitive trust. In addition, affective trust had a positive effect on cognitive trust and eWOM intention but did not affect WOM intention. Finally, cognitive trust was found to have a positive effect on both WOM intention and eWOM intention. Conclusions: This study redefines the concept of where restaurant service companies should focus when providing consumers with information about their products and services. As a result, the conceptual framework of positive word of mouth intention to increase new customer visits to the restaurant brand has been expanded. In addition, this study not only presents an information source management strategy for restaurant brands, but also presents practical implications for resource allocation guidelines for customer management in the restaurant sector.

  • Trust prediction between users in social network based on the trust propagation assumes properties of transitivity and composability of trust propagation. But it has been hard to find studies which test on how those properties have been operated in real social network. This study aims to validate if the longer the distance of trust paths and the less the numbers of trust paths, the higher prediction error occurs using two real social network data set. As a result, the longer the distance of trust paths, we can find higher prediction error when predicting level of trust between source and target users. But we can not find decreasing trend of prediction error though the possible number of trust paths between source and target users increases.

  • Many studies have pointed out that trust is the most important component of social capital. Although there have been lots of attempts to measure level of trust between members of community, it is hard to find studies which examine trust from the standpoint of structural aspects. Because of the recent rapid growth of SNS and openness trend on members and their friendship information, it became possible to understand the structure of trust relationships among users in SNS. This study aims to facilitate interpersonal trust by comparing the structure of the trust network among social network users. For this purpose, it proposes a method to explore the structure of trust network and strategies to evolve toward more open structure. In experiments to distinguish structure of trust network with three social network communities, it is discovered that ADVOGATO has characteristics of open and collective network together whereas EPINION and FILMTRUST have collective and open characteristics respectively.

  • The effective management of knowledge has become one of the critical success factors in current organizations. In spite of the extensive use of Knowledge Management System (KMS), useful information and knowledge resources are still transmitted through personal networks among people in organizations. Thus, social network theory which focuses on social relationships in organization can be a fruitful theoretical resource for enhancing Knowledge Management (KM) performances. In this study, we investigate the effects of intra-team network characteristics (i.e., group density and degree of centralization) and external boundary spanning activities on knowledge management performances of a team. We also acknowledge that all group members do not necessarily agree on the team goal and actively disseminate useful information and knowledge. Drawing on the political perspective on KM which emphasizes the role of trust among group members, we examine the mediating effects of team trust between internal/external network characteristics and KM performances. From the data of 220 teams in financial companies in Korea, we found that: (1) group density had positive effects on KM performances (i.e., knowledge creation, sharing, and use). (2) However, centralization was not significantly associated with KM performances. (3) Team trust was found to be an important factor mediating the relationship between intra-team network characteristics, boundary spanning activities, and KM performances. Based on these results, we discuss and suggest possible implications of the findings when designing and implementing KM practices.

  • Recently, the topic of predicting interpersonal trust in online social networks is receiving considerable attention, because trust plays a critical role in controlling the spread of distorted information and vicious rumors, as well as reducing uncertainties and risk from unreliable users in social networks. Several trust prediction models have been developed on the basis of transitivity and composability properties of trust; however, it is hard to find empirical studies on whether and how transitivity and composability properties of trust are operated in real online social networks. This study aims to predict interpersonal trust between two unknown users in social networks and verify the proposition on whether and how transitivity and composability of trust are operated in social networks. For this purpose, we chose three social network sites called FilmTrust, Advogato, and Epinion, which contain explicit trust information by their users, and we empirically investigated the proposition. Experimental results showed that trust can be propagated farther and farther along the trust link; however, when path distance becomes distant, the accuracy of trust prediction lowers because noise is activated in the process of trust propagation. Also, the composability property of trust is operated as we expected in real social networks. However, contrary to our expectations, when the path is synthesized more during the trust prediction, the reliability of predicted trust did not tend to increase gradually.

  • Purpose: The supply of and demand for medical services continue to increase as the current social environment changes. Consequently, competition among medical institutions is intensifying and hospitals must establish appropriate management strategies to improve the medical services they provide. This study suggests that the authenticity of doctors is a factor in improving medical-service quality and examines the effect authenticity has on the affective trust and satisfaction of patients. Design, methodology, and approach: The study utilized previous studies to examine the significance of potential variables, established hypotheses and used a questionnaire to confirm these hypotheses. The questionnaire was distributed to patients who had visited a hospital in the previous six months. Responses were analyzed empirically using structural equation modeling. Findings: The analysis found that a physician's authenticity has a significant impact on the affective trust of patients. While patients' affective trust does not have a similar strong impact on patient satisfaction, physician authenticity does have a significant impact on patient satisfaction. Conclusion and implications: This study examined the roles of authenticity, affective trust, and patient satisfaction in doctor-patient relationships in the medical services field. The implication of the findings is that physician authenticity is a prerequisite for patient satisfaction of medical services.

  • Recently, an effective building and utilization of information system are essential in franchise firms as well as corporate management. Accordingly, this study is to examine the structural relationships among partnership quality of supplier, trust with a supplier and commitment, and franchise information system performance based on Henderson's(1990) information system partnership model and Lee and Kim's(1999) partnership model. For these purposes, the authors developed several hypotheses. The data were collected from 173 franchisors and analyzed with SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 The results are as following. First, sharing knowledge, interdependence, and mutual benefit influence supplier trust, but do not influence commitment. Second, supplier trust affect commitment and it prove that supplier trust is a full mediating role between partnership quality and commitment of franchise and information system supplier. Third, both supplier trust and commitment have a positive effect on performance of franchise information system. Therefore, it implies that supplier trust is significant factor in an performance of franchise information system. At the end of this paper, managerial and theoretical implications, limitations and future research directions were suggested.
