Truing Performance of Metal-Bonded Grinding Wheel by Electro-Discharge Truing Method (금속결합제 연삭숫돌의 방전트루잉 성능 평가)

  • Truing process is a very important process for recovering the shape of wheels worn by continuous grinding operation. In this study, the devices, controller, and spindle for electro-discharge truing were developed, and the electro-discharge truing method was applied to metal-bonded grinding wheels and compared with the conventional truing method. The shapes of the grinding wheels were measured by a surface profile measurement device. The protrusion of abrasives on the surface of the wheels was compared with the conventional truing method using an optic microscope measurement device. The experimental results showed that the performance of the electro-discharge truing method, in terms of the protrusion of abrasives on the surface of the wheels and the recovery of the shape of the worn wheels, was similar to that of the conventional truing method.

Effect of Reference Current and Depth of Cut on Electro-Discharge Energy in Electro-Discharge Truing Process for Metal-Bonded Grinding Wheel (금속결합제 연삭숫돌의 방전트루잉에서 기준전류와 절입깊이가 방전에너지에 미치는 영향)

  • This study focused on developing an electro-discharge truing method for the ELID grinding process using a metal-bonded grinding wheel. The truing process in grinding plays important roles in enhancing the quality of the ground surface. In this study, a reference current in the electro-discharge truing process was confirmed to be a viable solution for efficient truing through performance experiments. Current and voltage variation experiments were carried out and the variation output data were collected with a monitoring program to understand the electrodischarge phenomenon that occurs between metal-bonded grinding wheels and copper electrodes. The experimental results showed that as the reference current decreased, the average electro-discharge energy decreased. Therefore, the reference current can be used as an indicator to estimate the size of the gap between the truer and grinding wheel.

A Study on Ultra Precision Machining for Aspherical Surface of Optical Parts (비구면 광학부품의 초정밀 가공에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with the precision grinding for aspherical surface of optical parts. A parallel grinding method using the spherical wheel was suggested as a new grinding method. In this method, the wheel axis is positioned at a $\pi$/4 from the Z-axis in the direction of the X-axis. An advantage of this grinding method is that the wheel used in grinding achieves its maximum area, reducing wheel wear and improving the accuracy of the ground mirror surface. In addition, a truing by the CG (curve generating) method was proposed. After truing, the shape of spherical wheel transcribed on the carbon is measured by the Form-Talysurf-120L. The error of the form in the spherical wheel which is the value ${\Delta}x$ and $R{^2}{_y}$ inferred from the measured profile data is compensated by the re-truing. Finally, in the aspherical grinding experiment, the WC of the molding die was examined by the parallel grinding method using the resin bonded diamond wheel with a grain size of #3000. A form accuracy of 0.16${\mu}m$ P-V and a surface roughness of 0.0067${\mu}m$ Ra have been resulted.

  • In this study, an experimental research of grinding characteristics using super-abrasives for surface carburized and heat treated SCM415 materials, which were usually used to make a linear motion guide block and were comparatively hard-to-machine materials, was carried out. In order to conduct a high efficiency and a accuracy grinding of such materials, grinding processes using CBN (Cubic boron nitride) and 38P grinding wheels have been attempted on a surface grinding machine. The grindability according to each grinding conditions was evaluated by means of a grinding force, a surface roughness and a residual stress. The experimental methods and results were presented in this paper. And also, from a proposed truing method the CBN wheels that combined a copper and a break truer gave a full scope to the wheel's performance.

  • Recently, the needs of non-symmetric spherical lens are increasing. Machining non-symmetric spherical lens by general method is limited. This paper researches grinding machine method for non-symmetric spherical lens and accruable problems at processing lens using CAD/CAM. In addition, this paper researches the relation of curvatures to grinding wheel sizes.

Wheel curve generation error of aspheric grinding in parallel grinding method (비구면 평행연삭에서의 휠구면형상 창성오차)

  • This paper presents a geometrical error analysis of wheel curve generation method for micro aspheric surface machining using parallel grinding method. In aspheric grinding, wheel wear in process is crucial parameter for profile error of the ground surface. To decrease wheel weal parallel grinding method is adopted. Wheel and work piece (Tungsten carbide) contact point changes during machining process. In truing process of the wheel radius is determined by the angle and distance between wheel and truer. Wheel radius error is predominantly affected by vertical deviation between the wheel rotation center and the truer center Simulation for vertical error and wheel radius error shows same tendency that expected by geometrical analysis. Experimental results show that the analysis of curve generation method matches with simulations and wheel radius errors.

  • The there axis CNC grinding machine tool for ultra-precison mirror surface grinding of advanced materials such as ceramics and other hard and brittle materials was designed and manufactured. The grinding machine is composed of the air spindle, the high damping resin concrete bed, and the three axis CNC controller with the high resolution AC servo motor. To investigate the dynamic properties of the grinding machine, the natural frequencies of the spindle and the headstock were experimentally measured. The truing method using the break truer to revise the shape of the metal bonded diamond wheel was developed. Form the results of the machining using the prototype three axis CNC grinding machine manufactured, the mirror surface were achieved.
