  • Preliminary antibacterial assay data that the Tectona grandis callus extract showed more antibacterial activity against E. coli and B. subtilis than the leaf extract led the authors to isolate the following antibacterial compounds from the callus. A mixture (3) of $2{\alpha},3{\beta}-dihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic$ acid (3a) and $2{\alpha},3{\beta}-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic$ acid (3b) exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity against both bacteria. The other 3 compounds, in the decreasing order of the activity, were identified as $2{\alpha},3{\beta}-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic$ acid (2), betulinic acid (1), and $2{\alpha},3{\alpha}$,23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (4). The antibacterial compounds (2, 3a, 3b and 4) were not detected or occurring in small quantities in the intact tissue, while they were observed in the callus. Only the less active compound 1 was present more abundantly in intact tissues than the callus.

  • A new cycloartane glycoside (1) was isolated from the aerial part of Thalictrum uchiyamai Nakai (Ranunculaceae). On the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence, the aglycone structure of this compound was characterized as 116, 25-dihydroxy-3, 24-diacetoxy-9, 19-cycloartane-29-oic acid, a new derivative of cycloartane triterpene. Also the oli-gosaccharide moiety of this glycoside were determined as 29-O-${alpha}$-L-rhanmnopyranosyl- ($1rightarrow2$)-[${beta}$-D-xylofuranosyl-($1rightarrow6$)-${beta}$-D-glucopyranose by application of HMBC technoque. Consequently, the structure of compound 1 was elucidated as 29-O-${alpha}$-L-rhanmnopyranosy-($1rightarrow2$)-[${beta}$-D-xylofuranosyl-($1rightarrow6$)-${beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-16, 25-dihydroxy-3, 24-diacetoxy-9, 19-cycloartane-29-oic acid ester.

  • Methanol extract of Ilex pubescens roots prolonged bleeding time threefold, and inhibited the generation of malondialdehyde released during platelet aggregation inducted by thrombin. Through several purification procedures, its saponin, named ilexoside, was proved to be responsible for the antithrombotic activities of the plant. Ilexosides A, -D and -J and 24-carboxypomolic acid showed strong inhibitory activities on platelet aggregation induced by thrombin.

  • [ $\beta$-Sitosterol and oleanolic acid were isolated in a pure form from Radix Panax Ginseng, the genuine Ginseng drug, by column chromatography on Silicagel and aluminium oxide (Woelm). TLC indicates the presence of at least three other triterpene sapogenins.

  • Pentacyclic triterpenes, mainly, asiatic acid, madecassic acid, asiaticoside, and madecassoside are the active constituents of Centella asiatica. A pentacyclic triterpene enriched C. asiatica extract (PRE) was prepared and standardized to contain a total pentacyclic triterpenes not less than 65% w/w. This work was focused on determination of antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of PRE and its stability. The PRE exhibited a satisfactory nitric oxide inhibitory effect, with an $IC_{50}$ value of $64.6{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, the PRE inhibited tyrosinase enzyme activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of $104.8{\mu}g/mL$. In contrast, the PRE possessed only weak antioxidant activity. The PRE was stable over a period of four months when stored as a dried powder but only in a well-closed container protected from light at $4^{\circ}C$. An aqueous alcoholic solution of the PRE was stable at pH values of 5.8 and 7.0, but was not stable at a pH of 8.2. Preparations of the PRE in an aqueous solution should be performed in acidic or neutral conditions.

  • Thirteen kinds of naturally occurring or derivatised thiterpenes, reported to have an antitumoral property, were reinvestigated on the basis of their direct cytotoxicity or the inhibitory activity on cell growth against five kinds of cultured human tumor cells, i.e., A-549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF-498 and HCT15, in vitro. Ursonic acid III, betulinic acid VIII, betulonic acid X and glycrrhetinic acid XI were exhibitied a marked inhibition on cell growth.

  • Nine triterpenes were isolated from the petroleum ether and MeOH extract of Perilla frutescens var. acuta leaves. Their structures were determined to be arjunic acid (1), maslinic acid (2), oleanolic acid (3), euscaphic acid (4), tormentic acid (5), 3-O-trans-p-coumaroyltormentic acid (6), 28-formyloxy-$3{\beta}$-hydroxy-urs-12-ene (7), ursolic acid (8), and corosolic acid (9) by spectroscopic methods. The compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 were isolated for the first time from this plant and the Genus Labiatae. The isolated compounds (1-9) were tested for cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, and HCT-15) in vitro using a Sulforhodamin B bioassay.
