  • This study was conducted to investigate pollutant loading, were quality and plant distribution of 8 streams which are tributaries of the Youngsan River. The nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and nutrient removall capacity of the most frequently occurring aquatic plants on streamside were also determined. As a result, the pollutant loading appeared to be correlated with the area of watershed, while the water quality was related to the land use pattern of each steam. The aquatic plants were distributed differently among the streams; Hydrilla verticillata - Potamogeton crispus, Numphoides peltata - Hydrocharis dubia and Polygonum thunbergii - Phragmites japonica were dominant at the Orye Chon, Jungan Chon, Whangryong River and Jiseok Chon, while potamogeton crispus - Lemma paucicostata, Zizania latifolia - Phragmites communis were dominant at the Youngam Chon and Munpyeong Chon. Persicaria hydropiper and Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola were dominant at Kwangju Chon which was polluted with domestic wastewater. >From the measurement of leaf NRA for dominant species, the highest value of NRA was shown by the Polygonum thunbergii, followed by Oenanthe javanica > Phragmites communis > Zizania latifolia > Lemma paucicostata. The highest nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity was found in Phragmites communis.

  • In the estimation of pollution load in water basin, a data information has generally used from surveyed data. A Geographic Information System(GIS) was adopted to evaluate the amount of pollution load in Anyang stream basin which is one of the major tributaries in the Han river flows through urban area. The digital maps of administrative boundary, stream network, sub-basin, soil type, and land-use for spatial data as well as attribute data were generated. And the database of sub-basins and pollution source was structured to estimate pollution load in Anyang stream basin by an Arc/Info GIS.As the results of this investigation, the pollution load of Mokgam-chun sub-basin was the highest amount. And that of Hagi-chun sub-basin and the fourth main stream sub-basin were also high amount in Anyang stream basin. In general, it was found that the pollution load generated from the upstream area in Kyunggi province was higher than that from downstream area in Seoul. Because the point and non-point source pollution load played very significant role in the deterioration of the water quality of the Anyang stream, an integrated approach to water quality management should be required for the sub-basins of high pollution load amount.

  • A one-dimensional numerical model has been developed through a Lagragian formulation, which is applicable to advection and diffusion of dissolved matters in storages. The study was conducted to the pollutants released into a canal network in Burnt Store Isles, Punta Gorda, Florida. USA. The hydrodynamic model was developed by using an implicit finite difference scheme. In the computational domain, the network system consists of prismatic channels and storages. The finger canals and small tributaries ale treated as storages in the simplified flow network The numerical results show relatively good agreement with field experiments.

  • The Imgok Creek is located in the Gangreung coal field, which has been known that sulfides are more abundant than other coal fields in Korea, and it has been severly contaminated by acid mine drainage (AMD) discharging from the abandoned coal mines, such as the Youngdong, the Dongduk and the Waryong coal mines. The purposes of this study are to synthetically assess the contamination of natural water, stream sediment and cultivated soils, and to provide the basic data for AMD treatment. Geochemical samples were collected in December, 1996 (dry season) and April, 1997 (after three day's rainfall). TDS of the Youngdong mine water was remarkably higher than those of other mine waters. In the Imgok Creek, concentrations of most elements, except Fe decreased with distance by dilution caused by the inflow of uncontaminated tributaries. From the results of NAMDI and $I_{geo}$ calculation, the Youngdong coal mine was the main contamination source of the study area. Groundwater pollution was not yet confirmed in this study and the paddy and farm land soils were also not yet contaminated by mining activity based on the pollution index ranging from 0.27 to 0.47.

  • The propriety of the numerical model application was examined on Paldang resevoir and its inflow tributaries located in the center of the Korean peninsula and the long term water quality forecast of the oxygen profile was carried out in this syduy. The input data of the model was the capacity of the reservoir, catchment area, percolation, diffusion rate, vertical mixing rate, dissolution rate from the bottom of the reservoir, outflow of the resevoir, water quality measurement and meteorology data of the drainage basin, and the output result was the annual estimation value of the dissolved oxygen concentration and the biochemical oxygen demand. The modeling method is based on the measured or calculated boundary condition dividing the water area into several blocks from the macorscopic aspect and considering the mass balance in these blocks. As the result of the water quality forecast, it was expected that the water quality in Northern Han River and Paldang reservoir would maintain the recent level, but that the water quality in the Southern Han River and its inflow tributary would worsen below the grade 4 of the life environmental standard from around 2000 owing to the decrease of DO concentration and the increase of BOD concentration.

  • To estimate pollution sources in the watershed with various industries, the simulation of contamination route and distribution of 2-methyl-4,6-dinitriophenol(DNOC) were performed with a numerical model Hydro Geo Sphere. This study was performed calculations of the load using the measured concentration and simulated flow rate. And, the river was divided by the sampling sites at the mainstream, and the contribution rate at downstream sampling sites was calculated for each section. The results showed the concentration of the downstream sampling sites were decided by the concentration of upstream sites, and the contribution rates of the tributaries were calculated below 10%. The results also showed that the impact of the potential sources in Section 1(Geumho1 ~ Geumho2) and Section 5(Geumho5 ~ Geumho6) was larger than in the other area. In Section1 and Section5, It seemed to require detailed investigation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in the Mankyung River using multivariate analysis. The analysis data which was surveyed from January 1996 to December 2002 in Mankyung river was aquired by the ministry of environment. Twelve water quality parameters were determined on each survey. The results were summarized as follow; Water quality in the Mankyung River could be explained up to 74.90% by four factors which were included in loading of organic matter and nutrients by the tributaries(43.28%), seasonal variation(10.40%), loading of pathogenic bacteria by domestic sewage of Gapcheon (12.41%) and internal metabolism in river(8.81%). The result of cluster analysis by station was classified into three group that has different water quality characteristics. Especially, Iksan river was appeared to considerable water quality characteristics against other station. In monthly cluster analysis, three group was classified by seasonal characteristics. Also, in yearly cluster analysis, three group was classified. It is necessary to control the pollutant loadings by domestic sewage and livestock waste for water quality management of Mankyung river.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify LSPIV technique. Verification was made using moving cart with known velocity. The difference of velocity values obtained using these methods are within 5%, which means that LSPIV can be used in the field with reasonable accuracy After verification, LSPIV was applied to the river. The Neungwon stream and the Gonjiam stream, tributaries of the Kyungan stream, were selected as the test sites for application. The results of the test application were compared with those obtained by 3-D electromagnetic current meter and electron-wave surface velocity meter. Results show that the velocity values obtained using LSPIV coincide well with those obtained using conventional devices with maximum difference of 8%.

  • A geochemical study was carried out to define how marine shore sediments are related to their terrestrial source rocks in the region of Taean and Byunsan Peninsula, western Korea. The lithology of the coastal part of the study area is composed of Pre-Cambrian granite gneiss, schist, Jurassic terrestrial sedimentary rocks, and Cretaceous plutonic intrusives. Shore sediments are transported from three drainage tributaries. The sediments consist of quatrz with clay minerals, such as illite, kaolinite, smectite, chlorite. Heavy minerals include hematite, ilmenite, rare amount of zircon and apatite. Compared to those in coastal rocks, amount of heavy minerals in the sediments is considerably low. The low content of heavy minerals is thought to be attributed to the heavy mineral detainment in the river beds and influences of tidal currents which cause heavy minerals to accumulate in specific spots. Chemical composition of the major and trace elements, trace elements, and REE chondrite normalized pattern suggest that shore sediments transported from the corresponding drainage tributary show close mineralogical and geochemical relationships with the source rocks distributed in the Taean and Byunsan Peninsula.

  • Geochemistry of stream water and sediment collected in the vicinity of the Donghae coal mine in the Samchuk coalfied were investigated in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of acid mine drainage. The pH of stream water ranges from 2.85(at 2 km away from the mine) to 7.92(at uncontaminated tributary). The main cation and anion species in the upper stream are $Ca^{2+}$ and $SO_{4}{^2-}$, respectively. The level of pH and the amount of $HCO^{3-}$ in stream water increase to the downstream and where uncontaminated small tributaries are joining, and in the area covered with limestone. From the results of thermodynamic calculation, the main forms of iron in stream water are estimated as $Fe^{2+}$ and $FeSO_{4}{^0}$, and most of them could be precipitated as FeO(OH) with increase of pH. The white precipitates in stream sediments particularly found around the coal mine are proved to be $Al(OH)_3$ by XRD and XRF analysis. As a result of investigation for seasonal variation of AMD, the level of pH decreased and conductivity increased in dry season.
