  • This paper describes the general trends of the stress-strain behavior of Korean weathered soil prior to failure and behavior at failure under triaxial loading. The isotropically consolidated samples were tested in a testing device under monotonic undrained loading. Relative density, effective mean pressure and fine content were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for a weathered Korean silty sand. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.

  • There were huge damages of human beings and their properties in many areas of the basin of the Nak-Dong river by the unusual weather and the localized downpour recently. In this research against disasters, we want to know strength of the cemented sand that is mixed with cement and poor-graded sand, to estimate CSG(Cemented Sand and Gravel) method used coffer dam in Japan, which is the materials of riverbed in the basin of the Nak-Dong river for levee's construction. For that, we want to provide the fundamental data which need in the examination of adaptation of levee's material, design and analysis by investigating compressive strength by curing period and cement content, elastic modulus and stress by transformation from compaction test, CBR test, unconfined compression test and triaxial compression test as changing cement content from 2% to 8% at two sites in the basin of the Nak-Dong river.

  • Earthquake-induced liquefaction on saturated loose sand is well known in the world. Since Saemangeum Dike Project has a plan to be reclaimed with dredged sand on wide river, possibility of liquefaction should be checked. Section Dongjin5 was selected to evaluate possibility of liquefaction. Estimating method follows as 1) determination of PL value with SPT results, passing curve, and soil properties, 2) prediction for maximum earthquake acceleration, 3) calculation for FL value on depth with Korean specification for highway bridges, 4) visualization for possibility of liquefaction on all of project area with GIS 5) comparison with Japanese specification for highway bridges, Youd and Idriss method, and Andrus and Stokoe II method for verification, 6) ascertainment for the potential liquefaction with cyclic triaxial test. 7) establishing for countermeasure if needed. From the results, even though most of area covered with sand, no potential liquefaction exists except some areas. Those need to soil improvement with grout or attaching measurement on substructure.

  • This paper presents a detailed study focused on investigating the effects of silt content on the static and dynamic properties of sand-silt mixtures. Specimens with a low-plastic silt content of 0, 15, 30 and 50% by weight were tested in static triaxial, cyclic triaxial, and resonant columns in addition to consolidation tests to determine such parameters as compression index, internal friction angle, cohesion, cyclic stress ratio, maximum shear modulus, normalized shear modulus and damping ratio. The test procedures were performed on specimens of three cases: constant void ratio index, e = 0.582; same peak deviator stress of 290 kPa; and constant relative density, $D_r$ = 30%. The test results obtained for both the constant-void-ratio-index and constant-relative-density specimens showed that as silt content increased, the internal friction angle, cyclic stress ratio and maximum shear modulus decreased, but cohesion increased. In testing of the same deviator stress specimens, both cohesion and internal friction angle were insignificantly altered with the increase in silt content. In addition, as silt content increased, the maximum shear modulus increased. The cyclic stress ratio first decreased as silt content increased to reach the threshold silt content and increased thereafter with further increases in silt content. Furthermore, the damping ratio was investigated based on different silt contents in three types of specimens.

  • This study finds the characteristics of long-term settlement of Bottom Ash and to review the application of Singh-Mitchell creep equation and Burgers Model to the creep behavior of Bottom Ash. In the undrained state, it was confirmed that creep behavior appeared in the range to 30-80 % of the maximum deviator stress by applying condition in other three stresses through triaxial compression test after isotropically consolidation. By using sieve analysis, it was compared to each sample that was passed through 9.5 mm, 2 mm, 0.25 mm sieves. Also, using Singh-Mitchell creep equation and Burgers Model, it was compared between the theoretical behavior and the observed behavior for each sample. In the result, it is found that creep behavior of Bottom Ash is similar to the theoretical behavior of Singh-Mitchell creep equation and Burgers Model in early stage and it is possible to predict creep behavior of Bottom Ash by these models.

  • Parameters of failure criteria, compressive strength and elastic modulus are most important for design and stability analysis of rock structure using numerical analysis. In this study, it suggests that the application of input data for numerical analysis by the literature study and the result of the 150 sets of triaxial compressive test. There was much different between parameters of failure criterion suggested by Hoek-Brown and parameters resulted from the analysis using 150 sets of triaxial compressive test. But the converting equations of compressive strength have had an interrelation with RMR. However, the converting of elastic of elastic modulus were different as chosen of equation, and the equation by Nicholson et at was more useful than others.

  • In this study, Liquefaction characteristics of saturated sand under various dynamic loadings such as sinusoidal loading, increasing wedge loading, and real earthquake loading were investigated focusing on the dissipated energy. From the results of cyclic triaxial test, liquefaction resistance strength was calculated by the concept of energy according to the type of input loading. Liquefaction resistance strength was expressed in accumulated dissipated energy calculated from stress-strain curve(hysteresis loop). The dissipated energy according to loading type was compared and the energy-based evaluation was proposed. The procedures are presented in terms of normalized energy demand(NED), normalized energy capacity(NEC), and factor of safely, where NED is the load imparted to the soil by the loading(both amplitude and duration), NEC is the demand required to induce liquefaction, and factor of safely is defined as the ratio of NEC and NED.

  • Undrained cyclic simple shear tests and undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed on silt containing sand in order to investigate the effects of silt contents on the liquefaction strength and shear characteristics of the sand. From the view that the difference of liquefaction strength for different content of silt stems from dilatancy characteristics of the sand, stress-dilatancy relation of the sand was obtained from drained triaxial test in which the mean stress was kept constant. Considerations on liquefaction behaviors were made by comparing the drained and undrained behaviors of sands during static shear test. It is concluded that ${\lambda}$-value of the stress-dilatancy relation will be closely related to the liquefaction strength.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a geogrid reinforced subbase of permeable flexible pavement structures with respect to permanent deformation. METHODS : Experimental trials employing a repeated triaxial load test scheme were conducted for both a geogrid reinforced subbase material and a control specimen to obtain the permanent deformation properties based on the VESYS model. Along with this, a finite element-based numerical analysis was conducted to predict pavement performance with respect to the rutting model incorporated into the analysis. RESULTSAND CONCLUSIONS : The results of the experimental study reveal that the geogrid reinforcement seems to be effective in mitigating permanent deformation of the subbase material. The permanent deformation was mostly achieved in the early stages of loading and then rapidly reached equilibrium as the number of load applications increased. The ultimate permanent deformation due to the geogrid reinforcement was about 1.5 times less than that of the control specimen. Numerical analysis showed that the permeable, flexible pavement structure with the geogrid reinforced subbase also exhibits less development of rutting throughout the service life. This reduction in rutting led to a 20% decrease in thickness of the subbase layer, which might be beneficial to reduce construction costs unless the structural adequacy is not ensured. In the near future, further verification must be conducted, both experimentally and numerically, to support these findings.

  • To increase the riding comfort and running stability of articulated type high speed railway vehicles(HSRV), it is important that the gangway connections for the passenger car satisfied fire safety, sound proof and durability under triaxial angular displacement (rolling/yawing/pitching) modes. On the other hand, a domestic test standard on the durability of the rubber components has not been determined. In this study, the fatigue life was predicted using the results of the nonlinear finite element analysis and the fatigue properties. Moreover, a fatigue rig test of the component was constructed to examine the durability.
