  • An analysis of convection, in a fully developed laminar steady flow through the vertical square duct under the condition of variational symmetric heat flux, is considered. Finite element solution algorithm by Galerkin's method with triangular elements and linear interpolation polynominals for the temperature and velocity profiles are derived for the vertical square duct. The comparison of temperature distribution due to variational symmetric heat flux in the duct were made with available the other data when the condition of peripheral heat flux were uniform and zero. Numerical values for the dimensionless temperatures and Nusselt numbers at selected Rayleigh numbers and pressure gradient parameters were obtained at a few nodal points for the vertical square ducts and effects of corner in the duct were investigated.

  • A new algorithm for automatic extraction of interesting objects is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm can be summarized in two steps. First, segmentation of color image that split interesting objects and backgrounds is performed. According to the research stating, 'Humans perceive things by contracting color into three to four essential colors,' a color image is segmented into three regions utilizing k-mean algorithm, followed by annexing the regions when the similarities of them exceeds the critical value based on the calculation of degrees in the histogram similarity, Second, identifying the interesting objects out of the segmented image, partitioned by the image composition theory, is performed. To have a good picture, it is important to adjust positions of interesting objects according to picture composition. Extracting objects is a retro-deduction process using a weighted mask designed upon the triangular composition of picture. To prove the quality of the proposed method, experiments are performed over four hundreds images as well as comparison with recently proposed KMCC and GBIS methods.

  • Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is an emerging technology that enables cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication. In ultraviolet (UV) NIL, low-cost and high-speed production can be achieved using a non-vacuum environment at room temperature and low pressure. However, there are problems with the formation of bubble defects in such an environment. This paper investigates the shape of the mold cavity and the bubble defect formation in UV NIL in a non-vacuum environment. The bubble defect formation was simulated using two-dimensional flow analysis and the VOF method for commonly used cavity mold shapes (rectangular, elliptical, and triangular). The characteristics of the resist flow front and various contact angles were also analyzed. The shape of the mold cavity had a very significant effect on the bubble defect formation. For all cavity shapes, a smaller contact angle with the mold and larger contact angle with the substrate decreased the possibility of bubble defect formation. The elliptical shape was the most effective for preventing bubble defect formation.

  • Although the pattern development for tight-fitting clothing has been carried out using 3D data on humans, the pattern development using 3D scan data obtained for various postures still remains an interesting subject. In this study, we have developed the 2D pattern using the 3D human body reflecting standing and cycling postures. The 3D scan data of a subject was obtained using Cyberware. 2C-AN program(Triangle simplification and the Runge-Kutta method) was used in the system to reduce the 3D scan data points and to make segmented triangular patches in a plane from 3D data. As results, surface distance and area of each body part of standing and cycling postures were also provided for the future application of the functional clothing construction. The area of center piece on the front (c.front) decreased by $106.45cm^2$(-13.08%) and that of lateral piece(s.back) on the back increased by $144.96cm^2$(18.69%) in the patterns of cycling posture. The girth of neck and waist for the cycling posture increased by 0.88cm (3.92%) and 1.56cm(4.40%) respectively, and the that of thigh decreased by 1.01cm(-2.24%). The differences between the area in the 2D pattern obtained from the 3D scan data and that in the 3D scan surface data for standing and cycling postures were very small($-10.34cm^2$(-0.32%) and $-44.33cm^2$(-1.32%)).

  • It is a mainly issue that provide mobility smoothly in Mobile IP networks. The IP mobility support being standardized in the IETF utilized tunneling of IP packets from a home agent to foreign agent and utilized reverse tunneling of IP packets from foreign agent to home agent. In this paper, We propose that solve the triangular routing problem in IP mobility and that lessen the messages about IETF routing optimization. Through the Mobile Routing Table on the edge router, agent process the message instead of a end node when handoff occur and that lessen the routing path length by sending directly from FA to to Correspond Node's router. This action lessen the message occurrence frequency and the packet drop. We compare the standard IP, Routing Optimization of Mobile IP, Wu's method and the proposed algorithm. Finally, the simulation results are presented.

  • A light deflector integrated laser diode(LD) was fabricated and the characteristics of LD and ourput beam deflection as a function of deflector injection current were measured. To integrate the deflector with LD, a passive waveguide was integrated with the LD and a triangular-type light deflector was fabricated on the upper clad of the passive waveguide section. Light deflection from the fabricated light deflector is controlled by the effective refractive index variation induced by carrier injection. To characterize the effect of the deflector injection current, threshold current, slope efficiency, and output beam spectrum were measured as a function of deflector injection current. From these measured data, the increment in the threshold current and the decrement of the slope efficiency were observed. However, the output beam spectrum was not affected by the deflector. The Beam Propagation Method(BPM) was used to simulate the proposed device and the light deflection was measured by the far-field pattern of the output beam as a function of the deflector injection current. In the fabricated deflector integrated LD, the deflection angle of 1.9$^{\circ}$ at the injection current of 15 ㎃ was obtained.

  • NATM(New Austrian Tunnelling Method) uses a support system of shotcrete, rockbolt and steel support, which are installed after tunnel excavation. Recently, a lattice girder among these support system is used in tunnelling. A lattice girder is a new steel support developed in Europe for the replacement of an existing H-shaped steel set, which is reported to have some problems in installation. This is a triangular shape welded with steel rods and is a light-weight support system which enables fast and easy installation of porepolling. The major advantage of a lattice girder is the good bonding with shotcrete. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of a lattice girder in tunnelling in Korea, field tests were performed at a high speed railway tunnel with a large section. Also, features of lattice girder in field tests were compared with those of a H-shaped steel set respectively. Field tests proved that a lattice girder fully supported the initial earth pressure developed right after excavation and limited ground deformation effectively.

  • We present a real-time GPU(Graphic Processing Unit) marching tetrahedra technique that extracts isosurfaces in the indexed mesh format from BCC(Body Centered Cubic) volume datasets. Compared to classical marching tetrahedra, our method shows better performance with little memory overhead. Our technique is composed of five stages. In the first stage, which needs to be done only once, we build min/max blocks that is to be used for empty space skipping to boost the performance. Next, we extract active blocks that contain the current isovalue. In the next two stages, we extract the edges and cells that contain the isosurface and then the final triangular mesh is generated in the last stage. When applied 5123 or higher resolution volume dataset, our technique shows up to 5 times speed improvement compared to the classical marching tetrahedra algorithm.

  • In general, triangular shape filters are used in the filter bank when we extract MFCC feature parameters from the spectrum of the speech signal. A different approach, which uses specific filter shapes in the filter bank that are optimized to the spectrum of training speech data, is proposed by Lee et al. to improve the recognition rate. A principal component analysis method is used to get the optimized filter coefficients. Using a large amount of 4-digit telephone speech database, in this paper, we get the MFCCs based on the PCA-optimized filter bank and compare the recognition performance with conventional MFCCs and direct weighted filter bank based MFCCs. Experimental results have shown that the MFCC based on the PCA-optimized filter bank give slight improvement in recognition rate compared to the conventional MFCCs but fail to achieve better performance than the MFCCs based on the direct weighted filter bank analysis. Experimental results are discussed with our findings.

  • New banana-shaped achiral compounds, 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-4(3-fluoro-9-alkenyloxy) phenyl-iminomethylbenzoate]s and 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-4-(3-fluoro-10-alkanyloxy) phenyliminomethyl benzoate]s were synthesized by varying the substituent (X=H, F, or Cl); their electrooptical properties are described. The smectic phases, including a switchable chiral smectic C ($SmC^{\ast}$) phase, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and triangular method. The presence of vinyl end group at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped molecules induced a decrease in melting temperature. The smectic phase having the undecenyloxy group such $as-(CH_2)_9CH=CH_2$ showed ferroelectric switching, and its value of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field was 2250 $nC/cm^2$, while the value of spontaneous polarization of the smectic phase having the decanyloxy group such as $-(CH2)_9CH_3$ was 3700 $nC/cm^2$. We could obtain the ferroelectric phase with low isotropic temperature by varying the end group at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped achiral molecules.
