  • Teliospores of two species of Gymnosporangium asiaticum and G.yamadae collected and identified from Juniperus chinensis, J.chinensis L.var.kaizuka. G.asiaticum was identified as the thick membraned (cell-walled) teliospores (avr 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and thin membraned teliospores (avr 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the telia of G.asiaticum was bluntly conical shaped and occured on the leaves and branches of Chinese junipers. G.yamadae was identified as the thick membraned (cell-walled) teliospores (avr 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and thin membraned teliospores (avr 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the telia of G. yamadae was gall or floral shaped and occured on the leaves and branches of Chinese junipers. Both of the telia of the two species of Gymnosporangium were occurred in a same tree of Juniperus chinensis L. var. kaizuka at the same time. But the dominant species is G. asiaticum. The more rainfall in the late of April (the season of forming basidiospore), the more rust diseases in Chaenomeles sinensis. C. sinensis, and Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta were infected by G. asiaticum (basidiospores) but Malus siebodii was not infected by G.asiaticum.

  • Thirty-two actinomycetes isolates from Korean forest soil were screened for their nematicidal and reproduction suppression activity against pine wood nematode (PWN) which is widely spread in Korea. Culture filterates of 21 isolates showed more than 90% mortality at 2-fold concentration. Among them, AM210, SG16, YD116 and YD315 were more effective than others on reproduction of PWN. The YD116 isolate was identified as Streptomyces atratus by morphological and 16S rDNA analyses. Hydrazine hydrate, similar to hydrazidomycin which has cytotoxicity among substances from S. atratus against PWN, was tested for its nematicidal activity. Ten ppm of the hydrate showed 60.8% mortality. Additional studies are needed for practical use of the S. atratus YD116 isolate.

  • Objectives: To improve local control and reduce toxicity, 3-D conformal radiotherapy was used as a boost the primary tumor site following fractionated radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Eight patients with previously untreated nasopharyngeal carcinomas were treated with 3-D conformal radiotherapy following fractionated radiotherapy from September 1998 to April 2000. All patients had biopsy confirmation of disease before radiation therapy. Stages were II in 1, III in 5, and IV in 2. Two patients received cisplatin based chemotherapy in addition to radiation therapy; induction chemotherapy in 1, concurrent chemoradiation in 1. 3-D conformal radiotherapy delivered using 6MV Linac as a boost(range 25.2-28.8Gy, median 25.7Gy) following conventionally fractionated radiotherapy(range 50.4Gy). Average total dose ranged from 75.6-79.2Gy(median 76Gy). Follow-up time was 4-21 months(median 9.6 months). Results: Seven of 8 patients were evaluated radiologically within 3 months after completion of radiation therapy. All 7 patients were seen complete remission. One of 7 patients had distant metastasis after 5 months and local failure after 7 months. The tree interval of local recurrence was ranged from 4 - 21 months(median 10.2 months). One patient without radiological evaluation got complete remission clinically. Treatment related toxicity was grade 1-3 xerostomia, dysphagia, and mucositis. During 3-D conformal radiotherapy, there was no aggravation of any toxicity. Conclusion: Although the number of patients was small and follow-up period was short, 3-D conformal radiotherapy following conventional radiotherapy improved tumor control and dose escalation without increased toxicity. Survival and late toxicity should be evaluated through long term follow-up. In addition, it is necessary to confirm the benefits of 3-D conformal radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma with randomized trial.

  • This study was to develop the assessment of medical service outcome using administration data through compared with hospital standardized mortality ratios(HSMR) in various hospitals. This study analyzed 63,664 cases of Hospital Discharge Injury Data of 2007 and 2008, provided by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We used data mining technique and compared decision tree and logistic regression for developing risk-adjustment model of in-hospital mortality. Our Analysis shows that gender, length of stay, Elixhauser comorbidity index, hospitalization path, and primary diagnosis are main variables which influence mortality ratio. By comparing hospital standardized mortality ratios(HSMR) with standardized variables, we found concrete differences (55.6-201.6) of hospital standardized mortality ratios(HSMR) among hospitals. This proves that there are quality-gaps of medical service among hospitals. This study outcome should be utilized more to achieve the improvement of the quality of medical service.

  • Thirty nine clones of ${\times}$Populus alba glandulosa were selected tentatively and planted in Hwasung in Kyunggi-do, Jinju in Kyungnam-do, Myongju in Kangweon-do. Height measurements after tree growing seasons, indicated significant differences between clones and locations. Interaction between clones and locations were not significant statistically. Among 39 clones, 65-29-19, 65-11-106, 67-47-10, 66-14-149, 64-6-44 were best performing clones. Height measurements in Hwasung Kyunggi, and Jinju Kyungnam were 3.83m, 4.02m respectively, while that in Myongju Kangweon was only 1.06m. Myongju plantation in Kangweon-do is located in altitude of 800m and its average annual temperature was $6.2^{\circ}C$. Retarded growth in this plantation is caused high altitude and low temperature of the plantation which resulted from nearly three monthes shorter growing period than two other plantations. It is also recommended that straightness of stem, branching, wood quality and insect and disease-resistance have to be considered as selection criteria along with growth performance.

  • Backgroud and Objectives: Major salivary gland tumor is a rare disease with a largely unknown origin. And also corresponding to the diversity of histopathologic characteristics is an equally wide distribution of clinical behavior that makes treatment decisions difficult. The aim of this study is to analysis the clinical experience of our major salivary gland tumor and to suggest a guidline of management. Materials and Methods : We studied clinical manifestations and treatment results of 104 patients who were diagnosed as major salivary gland tumors. Tumor site, patient age and sex of the patients were analysed. Histopathologic diagnosis, treatment modality, lymph nodes metastasis, recurrence rate and 5-year survival rate were studied on malignant tumors. Results: 1) 48 patients were male and 56 patients were female. 2) Benign tumors were 79 cases. They consisted of 57 cases(72%) of parotid tumor, 22 cases(27%) of submandibular tumor. And pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor. 3) Malignant tumors were 25 cases and were consisted of 19 cases(76%) of parotid tumor, 4 cases(l6%) of submandibular tumor and 2 cases(8%) of sublingual gland tumor with high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma as the most common cause. 4) In the malignant tumors, the number of stage I, II tumors was 14 and that of stage III, IV tumors was 11. Neck node metastasis was noted in 8 cases. 5) 8 cases of malignant tumor were died and all of them had high-grade malignancy. And they were dead before 17 months from the time of diagnosis. 6) Mean survival duration in the malignant salivary gland tumor was 56 months. 7) High-grade malignancy had a 5-year survival rate of 57.9%. A 5-year survival rate of TI, T2 patients was 92.9% and that of T3, T4 patients was 36.4%. That of patients who had neck node metastasis was 37.5% and that of those who had tree neck was 82.4%. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the survival rate is dependent on the tumor size, lymph node matastasis and histologic grade. And also the early diagnosis and radical surgery result in the increased survival rate and are effective for prevention of the tumor recurrance.

  • Pear cultivar 'Sinhwa' (Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta Nakai) was originated from a cross between 'Niitaka' and Whasan' with the aims of improving the fruit quality and the traits of cultivation and of early maturing more than 'Whasan' cultivar at Pear Research Station of National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 1995. 'Sinhwa' was preliminarily selected in 2004 and named in 2009. The tree shows vigorous growth habit and semi-spread characters like 'Niitaka'. Furthermore, it has a sufficient and well upkeep of the flower bud, so it can be more easily cultivated in orchards. In the flower characteristics, flowering time of 'Sinhwa' is $11^{th}$ April like as maternal parent 'Niitaka'. Also 'Sinhwa' has short of pollen grains, so it is need above two pollinizer cultivars. 'Sinhwa' is highly resistant to black leaf spot (Alternaria kikuchiana) and relatively strong to pear scab (Venturia nashicola) in field condition. The optimum harvest time is around Sep. $15^{th}$ in Naju, which is ahead of 'Whasan' about 10 days in the harvest period. The fruit shape is oblate and fruit skin color is yellowish-brown during harvesting time. The average weight of fruit is 627 g, and the soluble solids content is $13.0^{\circ}Brix$. The flesh is very soft and juicy, and renders good eating quality. Shelf life is about 30 days under the room temperature condition.

  • The pine wilt disease is one of the most serious forest diseases that kill the pine trees, and the study on the invasion and movement of the pine wood nematode within the tree is very important for understanding the inhabitation of pine wood nematode. In this relation, the microscopic observation was carried out to study the place of inhabitation and movement of pine wood nematode within the infested wood. In result, the rays were mainly infested by pine wood nematode and showed dark discoloration due to their necrosis in cross, radial and tangential surface. Also, the intensive damage was found in the resin canals. On the other hand, some traumatic resin canals in tangential band were identified in the sapwood near the cambium. In the ray, the pine wood nematode occurred more commonly in the ray parenchyma cell and fusiform ray with horizontal resin canal than in the ray tracheid and uniseriate ray without horizontal resin canal, respectively. The pine wood nematode was thought to move from ray to tracheid through the large natural opening, window-like pit, in the cross-field, neither through the small natural opening, bordered pit, in the tracheid nor through the tracheid wall by creating a bore hole.

  • Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis (LIP) is one of parenchymal pulmonary infiltrative diseases first described at 1966 by Carrington and Liebow. In LIP, there is a predominance of mature small lymphocytes in the interstitium of the lung which form germinal centers. The disease process surrounds, but dose not invade lung parenchyme, tracheobronchial tree and vascular structures. The etiology remains still unknown and the clinical features of this disorder have not been clearly defined. Therefore, the therapeutic modality is obscure. Development of LIP association with AIDS is often reported currently and possibility of progress to malignant lymphoma is emphasized. We experienced a case of primary LIP with pnemomediastinum. She was adimitted due to chest and anterior nuchal pain with chronic coughing, and diagnosed as pneumomediastinum with LIP. Medication with steroid was begun and some improvement of symptoms was observed, but an X-ray film of the chest remained same without improvement. We report above case with review of the literatures.
