  • Heat-transfer enhancement is seeked through modifications of fin surface. Real life plate-fin heat exchangers have complex three-dimensional geometries. Fins can have arrays of dimples and are attached to rows of penetrating tubes. To isolate the effect of surface modification, we model the real flow by a two-dimensional channel flow with a dimple on one side. The flow is analysed by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation by a finite volume method on a generalized boundary-fitted coordinate. Results show a trapped vortex inside the dimple for all cases computed. Local maximum of Nusselt number occurs near the downstream end of the dimple, due to such a vortex. Location of the vortex does not change with respect to the wall temperature change, but moved downstream when Reynolds number increases. This, together with the results that in all cases vortex core is somewhat downstream of the dimple center, suggests that the mean flow above continuously feeds the kinetic energy to the recirculating flow. Heat transfer enhancement and pressure losses are studied through analysing the relevant dimensionless parameters like, Nusselt number and friction factor. In all cases computed, dimpled channel flow experiences less pressure loss than two-dimensional Poiseuille flow.

  • Electromagnetic properties of $CeO_2$ doped and undoped YBaCuO superconductors were evaluated to investigate the effect of pinning center on the magnetization and magnetic shielding. The variation $\DeltaM$ with doping was maximum for 3% doping and decrease with further doping. The magnetic shielding was evaluated by measuring the induced voltage in secondary coil and the voltage initially set to 0.5V, decreased to 0.17V and 0.28V respectively for the undoped and 3% $CeO_2$ doped sample. The much less change in the induced voltage for the 3% doped sample is attributed to the increased flux shielding by shielding vortex current. The $CeO_2$ was converted to fine $BaCeO_3$ particles which were trapped in YBaCuO superconductor during the reaction sintering. The trapped fine particles, $BaCeO_3$ may be acted as a flux pinning center.

  • The heat transfer enhancement by pulsatile flow in the plate heat exchanger has been investigated numerically in the present study. The numerical study was performed in the range of the mass flux from 0.04 to 0.12 kg/s. The results showed that the pulsatile flow produces resonating vortex shedding at the groove sharp edges and a strong transient vortex rotation within the grooved channels. As a result, the mixing between the trapped volume in the grooved cavity and the main stream was enhanced. Good agreements between the predictions and measured data are obtained in steady flow. And the heat transfer of pulsatile flow is about 2.4 times than steady flow when frequency is 10 Hz and the mass flux of cold side is 0.04 kg/s.

  • The heat transfer enhancement by pulsatile flow in plate heat exchanger has been investigated numerically in the present study. The numerical study was performed ill the range of the Strouhal number from 0.04 to 2 and the Reynolds number from 370 to 730. The results showed that the pulsatile flow produces resonating vortex shedding at the groove sharp edges and a strong transient vortex rotation within the grooved channels. As a result, the mixing between the trapped volume in the grooved cavity and the main stream was enhanced. Good agreements between the predictions and measured data are obtained for the optimum frequency of pulsation and corresponding heat transfer enhancement

  • Separated flows passed complex geometries are modeled by discrete vortex techniques. The flows are assumed to be rotational and inviscid, and a new techlnique is described to determine the stream functions for linear shear profiles. The geometries considered are the snow cornice and the backward-facing step, whose edges allow for the separation of the flow and reattachment downstream of the recirculation regions. A point vortex has been added to the flows in order to constrain the separation points to be located at the edges, while the conformal mappings have been modified in order to smooth the sharp edges and to let the separation points free to oscillate around the points of maximum curvature. Unsteadiness is imposed to the flow by perturbing the vortex location, either by displacing the vortex from the equilibrium, or by imposing a random perturbation with zero mean to the vortex in equilibrium. The trajectories of passive scalars continuously released upwind of the separation point and trapped by the recirculating bubble are numerically integrated, and concentration time series are calculated at fixed locations downwind of the reattachment points. This model proves to be capable of reproducing the trapping and intermittent release of scalars, in agreement with the simulation of the flow passed a snow cornice performed by a discrete multi-vortex model, as well as with direct numerical simulations of the flow passed a backward-facing step. The results of simulation indicate that for flows undergoing separation and reattachment the unsteadiness of the recirculating bubble is the main mechanism responsible for the intense large-scale concentration fluctuations downstream.

  • The purpose of the present research is to suppress cavitation instabilities by using a circumferential groove. The circumferential groove was designed based on CFD so that the tip leakage vortex is trapped by the groove and does not interact with the next blade. Experimental results show that the groove can suppress rotating cavitation, asymmetric cavitation and cavitation surge. However, weak instabilities with higher frequency could not be suppressed by the groove. From the analysis of pressure pattern similar to that for rotor-stator interaction, it was found that the higher frequency components are caused by the interaction of backflow vortices with the inducer blades.

  • Even though the scale of hard structures for beach stabilization should carefully be determined such that these structures do not interrupt the great yearly circulation process of beach sediment in which the self-healing ability of natural beach takes places, massive hard structures such as the submerged breakwater of wide-width are frequently deployed as the beach stabilization measures. On this rationale, asymmetric ripple mat by Irie et al. (1994) can be the alternatives for beach stabilization due to its small scale to replace the preferred submerged breaker of wide-width. The effectiveness of asymmetric ripple mat is determined by how effectively the vortices enforced at the contraction part of flow area over the mat traps the sediment moving toward the offshore by the run-down. In order to verify this hypothesis, we carry out the numerical simulations based on the Navier-Stokes equation and the physically-based morphology model. Numerical results show that the asymmetric ripple mat effectively capture the sediment by forced vortex enforced at the apex of asymmetric ripple mat, and bring these trapped sediments back to the beach, which has been regarded to be the driving mechanism of beach stabilization effect of asymmetric ripple mat.
