  • This study was performed to find the most desirable emission reduction for each mobile source pollutant and the optimal control strategy at a given level of expenditures in Pusan City in 2000 by using the interactive s-constraint method developed by Chang-Hyo Lee and Hyung-Wook Kim, which isone of the mathematical programming models. The most desirable emission reduction is 7093 ton/year for particulate (TSP), 4871 ton/year for NOx, 5148 ton/year for HC and 36779 ton/year for CO. The optimal control strategy is as follows; 1. As to passenger car and taxi, limiting VKT (vehicle kilometers travelled) in congested areas will be necessary. In addition to this, improving vehicie inspection Program should be enforced. 2. As to small-gasoline bus, traffic adaptive control system will be necessary. 3. As to small-diesel bus, non-adjustable engine parameters will have to be applied. .4. As to heal bus and heart truck, catalytic trap oxidizer and limiting VKT in congested areas will do necessary. 5. As to motorcycle, 2-cycle motorcycles should be converted to 4-cycle motorcycles.

  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction. • The interfacial charge distribution was investigated using PE laminate system. It was found that a proper treatment of the interlace could decrease the amount of charge accumulated at the interfaces. High lamination temperature and long lamination time brought about little interfacial charge. It was also observed that the interfacial charge could be decreased by the addition of chemicals which had charge trap or hopping site.

  • Charging of spacecraft occurs in plasma and radiation environment. Especially, we focused on an accident caused by internal charging in a glass material that was used as the cover plate of solar panel array, and tried to measure the charge distribution in glass materials under electron beam irradiation by using a PEA (Pulsed Electro-Acoustic method) system. In the case of a quartz glass (pure $SiO_2$), no charge accumulation was observed either during or after the electron beam irradiation. On the contrary, positive charge accumulation was observed in glass samples containing metal-oxide components. It is found that the polarity of the observed charges depends on the contents of the impurities. To identify which impurity dominates the polarity of the accumulated charge, we measured charge distributions in several glass materials containing various metal-oxide components and calculated the trap energy depths from the charge decay characteristics of all glass samples.

  • Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has long been projected as a powerful analytical technique for chemical and biological sensing applications. Pairing with portable Raman spectrometers makes the technique extremely appealing as real-time sensors for field application. However, the lack of reliable, uniform, low cost and ease-of-use SERS enhancement structures has prevented the wide adoption of this technique for general applications. We have discovered a novel hybrid structure based on the high-density and uniform arrays of gold nanofingers over a large surface area for SERS applications. The nanofingers are flexible and their tips can be brought together to trap molecules to mimic the biological system. We report here a rapid, simple, low-cost, and sensitive method of detecting trace level of food contaminants by using nanofinger chips based on portable SERS technique. We also present here the characterization of surface reaction of target molecules with our gold nanofinger substrates and the effect of nanofinger closing towards SERS performance. This new type of nano-structures can potentially revolutionize the medical and biologic research by providing a novel way to capture, localize, manipulate, and interrogate biological molecules with unprecedented capabilities.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of alendronate and taurine in inhibiting in vitro osteoclast differentiation induced by bacteria. Whole cell sonicates of P. gingivalis were used as an osteoclast-stimulating factor in a mouse coculture system and differentiated osteoclasts were confirmed by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Alendronate at the concentrations of 10-7, 10-6, and 10-5 M, and taurine at the concentrations of 4mM, 8mM, and 12mM were used.(omitted)

  • The physics-based compact gate leakage current noise models in nanoscale MOSFETs are developed in such a way that the models incorporate important physical effects and are suitable for circuit simulators, including QM (quantum-mechanical) effects. An emphasis on the trap-related parameters of noise models is laid to make the models adaptable to the variations in different process technologies and to make its parameters easily extractable from measured data. With the help of an accurate and generally applicable compact noise models, the compact noise models are successfully implemented into BSIM (Berkeley Short-channel IGFET Model) format. It is shown that the noise models have good agreement with measurements over the frequency, gate-source and drain-source bias ranges.

  • The oil trap in oil separator is one of the most important characteristics for normal operation of compressor. In this study, oil separation characteristics has been investigated for $CO_2$/PAG mixture using a gravity type of oil separator. The experimental study has been carried out in the range of oil concentration 0 to 5 weight-percent and the mixture temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The results obtained indicate that oil separation ratio in oil separator is increased with an increase in the oil concentration and mixture temperature.

  • We screened natural products to find compounds with anti-osteoporotic potential using a coculture-based system by which osteoclast differentiation is effectively achieved. We found that methylene chloride soluble fraction of the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Labiatae) suppressed osteoclast differentiation. Five tanshinones, tanshinone IIA (1), tanshinone I (2), cryptotanshinone (3), 15,16-dihydrotanshinone I (4), and ferruginol (5) were subsequently isolated from fraction. Among the five compounds, compounds 1-4 reduced the formation of TRAPpositive multinuclear osteoclasts. These results suggest that the identified tanshinones may be useful candidates for development of therapeutic agents to treat osteoporosis and other bone-resorptive diseases.
