  • No specific guidelines are available for computing the bearing strength of connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. There were carried out analytical and experimental studies on connection between steel coupling beam and concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. Experiments were carried out to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behavior in connection between steel coupling beam and shear wall, i.e., the auxiliary stud bolts attached to the steel beam flanges and the transverse ties at the top and the bottom steel beam flanges. In addition, additional test were conducted to verify the strength equations of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The proposed equations in this study were in good agreement with both our test results and other test data from the literature.

  • The transient analysis of partially supported laminated plates with rectangular holes under uniformly distributed transverse load is studied using finite element method. The first-order shear deformation theory and the variational energy method are employed in mathematical formulation. The effects on central deflection by plate thickness ratio, material modulus ratio, ply lamination geometry and boundary conditions are investigated Numerical results are presented and comparisons of the results by the present method with those given in the literature are made.

  • Due to lack of information, current design methods to calculate bearing strength of connections are tacit about cases in which hybrid coupled walls have connection details of stud bolts and horizontal ties. In this study, analytical study was carried out to develop model for calculating the connections strength of embedded steel section. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety of ultra-high strength concrete columns with 100 MPa compressive strength for the requirement of ACI provisions. Eight 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the cross section $300{\times}300mm$ and the aspect ratio 4. The main variables are axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. Consequently, to secure the ductile behavior of 100 MPa ultra-high strength concrete columns, ACI provisions for the requirement of transverse steel may considered axial load level and the details of transverse reinforcement.

  • Earthquake resistance of RC column-steel beam (RCS) joints with simplified details were studied. Simplified details are necessary for large columns to improve the productivity and constructability. To strengthen the beam-column joint, the effects of transverse beams, studs, and U-cross ties were used. Four 2/3 scale interior RCS connections were tested under cyclic lateral loading. The specimens generally exhibited good deformation capacity exceeding 4.0% story drift ratio after yielding of both beam and beam-column joint. Ultimately, the specimens failed by shear mechanism of the joint panel. The test strengths were compared with the predictions of existing design methods.

  • It is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior of rail steel under the multi-axial stress state to assure the railway vehicle's safety. For this purpose, the stress analysis to investigate the crack initiation criteria, static failure and fatigue behavior under mixed-mode are performed. The stress analysis results show that the initiation of the transverse fissure depends on the maximum shear stress below the surface. For the mixed mode, the fatigue crack growth behavior which is represented by the projection crack length and comparative S.I.F, ${\Delta}K_v$, shows the more conservative results. Also, its rate is lower than that of the case of the mode I, and this difference decreases with increasing the stress ratio, R.

  • Computation of flexural ductility of reinforced concrete beam sections has been proposed by taking into account strain rate sensitive constitutive behavior of concrete and steel, confinement of core concrete and degradation of cover concrete during load reversal under earthquake loading. The estimate of flexural ductility of reinforced concrete rectangular sections has been made for a wide range of tension and compression steel ratios for confined and unconfined concrete at a strain rate varying from $3.3{\times}10^{-5}$ to 1.0/sec encountered during normal and earthquake loading. The parametric studies indicated that flexural ductility factor decreases at increasing strain rates. Percentage decrease is more for a richer mix concrete with the similar reinforcement. The confinement effect has marked influence on flexural ductility and increase in ductility is more than twice for confined concrete (0.6 percent volumetric ratio of transverse steel) compared to unconfined concrete. The provisions in various codes for achieving ductility in moment resisting frames have been discussed.

  • This paper presents an equation for balanced-steel ratio in longitudinal and transverse direction throughout analysis based on a space truss model introducing the concept of concrete softening effect. This paper also presents as equation for postcracking torisonal stiffness throughout analysis considering the equilibrium conditions and compatibility conditions based on shear panel. Correlation between predicted postcracking torsional stiffness, and experimental results was good, not only for beams tested in this paper but also for others in the literature.

  • With the increase in the use of High-Strength Concrete(HSC) despite the its weakness like brittle characteristic, it is important to improve the performance of HSC columns, nowadays. Therefore, it is common to use higher strength steel in HSC for the purpose of ductility and strength improvement. This experimental study was set up to investigate the inelastic behavior of HSC(700kg/$cm^{2}$) columns subjected to combined axial and repeated lateral loads. Effects of key variables such as the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement, tie configuration and tie yield strength are studied in this research program. Test results indicate that inelastic response of HSC columns improve with proper confinement of core concrete. Increasing the amount of transverse reiuorement results in increased ductility.

  • Because steel girder bridge has big slenderness ratio, buckling is very important in design. Local buckling of plate girders having two longitudinal stiffeners in different positions under various load conditions is investigated. Various parametric study according to the change of web height, transverse stiffeners and load conditions are examined. These parametric studies are performed by numerical simulation utilizing finite element method. The objective of this study is to present the rational reinforcement location of two longitudinal stiffeners. The results of analysis are compared to that recommended by korean specifications for road bridges(2003).
