Fatigue performance of rib-roof weld in steel bridge decks with corner braces

  • To study the effects of corner braces on fatigue performance of the U-rib and roof weld in steel bridge decks, the fatigue experiment was carried out to compare characteristics of the crack shape with and without corner braces. The improvement of fatigue life and stress variation after setting corner braces were also analysed. Different parameters of corner brace sizes, arrangements, and detail types were considered in the FEM models to obtain stress distribution and variation at the weld. Furthermore, enhancement of the fatigue performance by corner braces was evaluated. The results demonstrated that the corner brace could improve the fatigue life of the U-rib and roof weld, which exerted even no influence on the crack shape. Moreover, stress of the roof weld was decreased and the crack position was transferred from the root weld to U-rib and corner brace weld. It was suggested no weld scallop should be drilled on the corner brace. A transverse rib with lower height which was set between U-ribs was favourable for improvement of fatigue performance.

Numerical simulation of Y-type perfobond rib shear connectors using finite element analysis

  • This study presents finite element analysis (FEA) on a Y-type perfobond rib shear connection using Abaqus software. The performance of a shear connection is evaluated by conducting a push-out test. However, in practice, it is inefficient to verify the performance by conducting a push-out test with regard to all design variables pertaining to a shear connector. To overcome this problem, FEA is conducted on various shear connectors to accurately estimate the shear strength of the Y-type perfobond rib shear connection. Previous push-out test results for 14 typical push-out test specimens and those obtained through FEA are compared to analyze the shear behavior including consideration of the design variables. The results show that the developed finite element model successfully reflects the effects of changes in the design variables. In addition, using the developed FEA model, the shear resistance of a stubby Y-type perfobond rib shear connector is evaluated based on the concrete strength and transverse rebar size variables. Then, the existing shear resistance formula is upgraded based on the FEA results.

리브 형상 및 개수에 따른 사각플라스틱 페트병의 강성보강에 관한 연구 (A study of Improvement of Stiffness for Plastic PET bottle with Different Geometries and Numbers of Rib)

  • Excessive use of plastic bottles contributes to a significant environmental issue due to the high volume of plastic waste generated. To address this, efforts are needed to reduce the weight of plastic bottles. However, indiscriminate weight reduction may compromise the essential rigidity required for plastic bottles. Extensive research on rib shape for pressure vessels are exists, but there is a few research of rib shapes to enhance the stiffness of plastic bottles. The following results were obtained from the analyses conducted in this study. 1) Among the rib cross-sections of square, trapezoid, and triangle, the buckling critical load of PET bottles with square-shaped ribs is improved by about 14% compared to the buckling critical load of PET bottles without ribs. 2) The buckling critical load is improved by about 18% when a square-shaped rib with an aspect ratio of 0.2 is applied, compared to the buckling critical load of the bottle without the rib. 3) When longitudinal and transverse square ribs were applied to the axial direction of the PET bottle, the buckling critical load was improved by about 32% and 58% compared to the buckling critical load of the PET bottle without ribs, respectively, indicating that applying longitudinal ribs is effective in reinforcing the stiffness of PET bottles. 4) When 14 transverse ribs were applied, the maximum improvement was about 48% compared to the buckling critical load of the plastic bottle without ribs. 5) When 3 longitudinal ribs were applied on each side, the maximum improvement was about 76% compared to the buckling critical load of the bottle without ribs. Therefore, it was concluded that for effective stiffness reinforcement of a 500ml square bottle with a thickness of 0.5mm, 3 square-shaped ribs with an aspect ratio of 0.2 should be applied in the longitudinal direction relative to the axial direction of the bottle.

여러 가지 형태의 립이 설치된 수평채널의 열전달 및 압력강하 특성에 관한 수치해석 (Numerical analysis on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in a horizontal channel with various ribs)

  • 열전달 향상을 위하여 이차유동을 발생시켜 열전달을 증가시키는 방법에는 여러 가지가 있다. 본 연구에서는 수평채널에 다양한 형태의 립을 설치하여 유속을 변화시켰을 때의 열전달 및 압력강하 특성을 수치해석을 통하여 고찰하였다. 립은 수평채널의 아랫면에 설치하였고, 립의 높이는 5mm이다. 립이 $60^{\circ}$ 기울어지고 그루브도 설치된 경우 열전달 특성이 가장 우수하게 나타났는데, 이는 주유동이 립을 따라 흘러가면서도 유속이 어느 정도 유지되기 때문이다. 끊어진 립에서 주유동이 립의 저항을 적게 받으면서 압력강하가 가장 작게 나타났다. 모든 립의 형태에서 유속이 증가함에 따라 열전달이 향상되는 경향을 보였지만 성능계수는 감소하였다.

와이어 스크린 리브이 열전달과 마찰계수에 미치는 효과 (Effects of the Wire-screen Rib on Heat Transfer and Friction Factors)

  • 유체 유동에 수직인 방향으로 반복적 리브이 설치된 사각 채널에서 열전달 계수와 마찰계수를 측정하기 위해 실험을 수행하였다. 시험부의 치수는 198 mm(폭)과 40 mm(높이) 그리고 길이가 712mm인 직사각형 채널이다. 시험부 채널의 형상비는 4.95이고 수력 직경 $D_h$은 6.66 cm이었다. 4종류의 와이어 스크린 리브(rib)과 한 개의 일체형 리브을 사용하였다. 0.1 mm 두께의 스테인레스 강판 히터와 T형 열전대를 사용하였다. 레이놀즈 수의 범위는 20,000에서 60,000이었다. 수력직경($D_h$)과 리브의 높(e)이 비($e/D_h$)는 0.075이고 리브 간격(p) 대 높이(e)으 비(p/e)는 10이다. 연구결과 일체형 리브이 누셀트수와 마찰계수 모두 가장 컸다.

강바닥판교의 벌크헤드 플레이트에 관한 매개변수 연구 (A Parametric Study on Bulkhead Plate of Orthotropic Steel Deck Bridge)

  • Recently, the bridges become greater according to development of a construction technology. This phenomenon requires long span bridge, so that increases the dead weight. The orthotropic steel deck bridges have much advantages such as the light dead weight and the reduction of construction period. And almost whole process of carried out is manufactured at factory, so it can cause the increase of quality authoritativeness. But orthotropic steel deck bridge is consist of structure by welding, it can not avoid a lot of welding jobs, defects and transformation by welding are becoming problem accordingly. Specially, topical stress concentration phenomenon in cross connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib causes fatigue failure. The Bulkhead Plate for prevention of this stress concentration phenomenon was applied by changing the orthotropic steel deck of Williamsburg bridge in USA. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that the study for installation of Bulkhead Plate is needed. This treatise with considering these circumstances proves efficiency of Bulkhead Plate and will be presented optimal design details through finite element analysis according to change the geometrical of Bulkhead Plate and tile cross-connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib.

四角리브를 갖는 傳熱面에 衝突하는 2次元 噴流의 熱傳達에 관한 硏究 (Heat Transfer of a Two-Dimensional Jet Impinging on the Wall with Transverse Repeated Ribs of Square Cross-Section)

  • 본 논문에서는 2차원충돌분류에서 사각리브(rib)를 갖는 요철형전열면에 대한 실험에 관한 것이며, 리브의 높이를 (e=5nm) 일정하게 하고 리브의 피치(p=25,35,50 nm) 변화, 노즐출구와 전열면간 거이(H/B=1~14) 및 노즐출구유속(u$_{e}$=12.30~ 18.07m/s)의 변화에 따른 전열특성을 실험적으로 구명하고 평판전열면의 경우와 비교 검토한다. 또한 스모크와이어(smoke-wire)법으로 평판 및 리브판에서의 유체의 거동 을 가시화하여 전열기구의 정성적 특성을 검토하는데 목적이 있다.

Radiographic evaluation of congenital vertebral anomalies in Korean raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis)

  • Background: The normal vertebral anatomy of Korean raccoon dogs and their variants require research attention as a prerequisite for identifying pathologies and anomalies. Objectives: This retrospective study aimed at describing the vertebral formula and congenital vertebral anomalies in Korean raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis). Methods: Radiographs of 82 raccoon dogs (42 males, 40 females) acquired from May 2013 to June 2020 in the Gangwon Wildlife Medical Rescue Center were reviewed to evaluate the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae of the spine. Results: Normal morphology of all vertebrae was observed in 50 of the 82 raccoon dogs, and the vertebral formula was cervical 7, thoracic 13, and lumbar 7. Congenital vertebral anomalies were found in 32 raccoon dogs: transitional vertebrae (TV) in 31 and block vertebrae in 2. Two raccoon dogs had 2 types of vertebral anomalies: one had TV and block vertebra, and the other had 2 types of TV. Twenty-nine raccoon dogs had thoracolumbar TV (TTV) and 3 had lumbosacral TV. TTV was morphologically classified into 4 different types: unilateral extra-rib in 5 raccoon dogs, bilateral extra-ribs in 14, bilateral elongated transverse processes in 4, and an asymmetric mixed formation of extra-rib with elongated transverse process in 6. Conclusions: This study showed that TTV is common in Korean raccoon dogs, and that the vertebral formula is relatively diverse. The bilateral extra-ribs type TTV is the most common variant, which is almost similar to normal rib to be confused the radiographic evaluation.

세로리브 내부 보강상세에 따른 강바닥판 연결부의 피로거동 특성에 관한 해석적 연구 (Analytical Study on the Characteristic of Fatigue Behavior in Connection Parts of Orthotropic Steel Decks with Retrofitted Structural Details in Longitudinal Rib)

  • 윤하중을 직접 받는 강바닥판교는 공용연수 증가에 따라 세로리브와 가로리브 교차부 주위 등의 구조상세 등에서 피로 균열발생 사례가 증가하고 있는데, 이러한 피로균열 억제방안으로는 바닥강판의 두께를 증가시키거나 세로리브 내부에 보강상세 적용 등이 효율적인 것으로 보고되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존 연구에서 피로균열 발생이 빈번히 보고되고 있는 가로리브와 세로리브 연결부, 세로리브 및 가로리브 슬릿부를 대상으로 세로리브의 무보강상세 및 보강상세에 대한 구조해석을 수행하여 피로강도 향상을 위한 구조상세를 제안하고자 한다. 해석에서는 세로리브내의 벌크헤드 및 수직리브를 대상으로 형상 및 크기 변화, 부착위치를 변수로 하여 상세 구조해석을 수행하였다. 해석 결 과 보강상세가 있는 경우가 대상 구조상세부에서의 응력감소가 더 크며, 벌크헤드 상세보다는 수직리브 보강상세에서 피로강도 향상이 더 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

말의 흉추골유합과 요추골변형의 1례 (A case of fused thoracic vertebrae and deformity of the lumbar vertebrae in equine)

  • The fused thoracic vertebra and deformity of the lumbar vertebrae in the female Thoroughbred horse were observed macroscopically. The 11th and 12th thoracic vertebrae (T) were partially fused. They were composed of three parts between the spinous process of the 11th and 12th T, left and right caudal articular processes of the 11th T, and left and right cranial articular processes of the 12th T. The vertical surface of cranial articular process of the 11th T and left mamillary process of the 12th T were absent. The left caudal part of the transverse process of the 12th T and left costal fovea of the transverse process of the 12th T were severely deformed. On the other hand, the left transverse process of the first lumbar vertebra (L) was a typical rib-like transverse process and two times longer than the right transverse process of the 2nd L. The right transverse process of 4th L has an oval concave facet on the medial part of caudal border for articulation with the right transverse process of 5th L; the latter has a corresponding convex facet on the medial part of the cranial border in the right transverse process of the 5th L.
