The bending stress formula that taking into account the transverse deformation is developed for plane-curved, untwisted isotropic beams subjected to loadings that result in deformations in the plane of curvature. In order to account the transverse Poisson contraction effect, a new constitutive relation between force resultants, moment resultants, mid-plane strains and deformed curvatures for a curved plate is derived in a $6{\times}6$ matrix form. This constitutive relation will provide the fundamental basis to the analyses of curved structures composing of isotropic or anisotropic materials. Then, the bending stress formula of a curved isotropic beam can be deduced from this newly developed curved plate theory. The stress predictions by the present analysis are compared to those by the analysis that neglected the Poisson contraction effect. The results show that the Poisson effect becomes more significant as the Poisson ratio and the curvature are getting larger.
The objective of this present work is to estimate the failure loads, associated maximum transverse displacements, locations and the modes of failure, including the onset of delamination, of thin, square symmetric laminates under the action in-plane positive (+ve) shear load. Two progressive failure analyses, one using the Hashin criterion and the other using a Tensor polynomial criterion, are used in conjunction with finite element method. First order shear deformation theory along with geometric non-linearity in the von Karman sense have been employed. Variation of failure loads and failure characteristics with five type of lay-ups and three types of boundary conditions has been investigated in detail. It is observed that the maximum difference between failure loads predieted by various criteria depends strongly on the laminate lay-up and the flexural boundary restraint. Laminates with clamped edges are found to be more susceptible to failure due to transverse shear (ensuing from the out of plane bending) and delamination, while those with simply supported edges undergo total collapse at a load slightly higher than the fiber failure load. The investigation on negative (-ve) in-plane shear load is in progress and will be communicated as part-II of the present work.

Many experimental studies have evaluated the in-plane behavior of reinforced concrete frames in order to understand mechanisms that resist progressive collapse. The effects of transverse beams, frames and slabs often are neglected due to their probable complexities. In the present study, an experimental and numerical assessment is performed to investigate the effects of transverse beams on the collapse behavior of reinforced concrete frames. Tests were undertaken on a 3/10-scale reinforced concrete sub-assemblage, consisting of a double-span beam and two end columns within the frame plane connected to a transverse frame at the middle joint. The specimen was placed under a monotonic vertical load to simulate the progressive collapse of the frame. Alternative load paths, mechanism of formation and development of cracks and major resistance mechanisms were compared with a two-dimensional scaled specimen without a transverse beam. The results demonstrate a general enhancement in resistance mechanisms with a considerable emphasis on the flexural capacity of the transverse beam. Additionally, the role of the transverse beam in restraining the rotation of the middle joint was evident, which in turn leads to more ductile behavior. A macro-model was also developed to further investigate progressive collapse in three dimensions. Along with the validated numerical model, a parametric study was undertaken to investigate the effects of the removed column location and beam section details on the progressive collapse behavior.
In this study, the supersonic panel flutter of doubly curved composite sandwich panels with variable thickness is considered under aerothermoelastic loading. Considering different radii of curvatures of the face sheets in this paper, the thickness of the core is a function of plane coordinates (x,y), which is unique. For the first time in the current model, the continuity conditions of the transverse shear stress, transverse normal stress and transverse normal stress gradient at the layer interfaces, as well as the conditions of zero transverse shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces of the sandwich panel are satisfied. The formulation is based on an enhanced higher order sandwich panel theory and the vertical displacement component of the face sheets is assumed as a quadratic one, while a cubic pattern is used for the in-plane displacement components of the face sheets and the all displacement components of the core. The formulation is based on the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ nonlinear approximation, the one-dimensional Fourier equation of the heat conduction along the thickness direction, and the first-order piston theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived using the Hamilton principle and the results are validated by the latest results published in the literature.
The possibility of detecting a crack in L-shaped pipes filled with fluid based on measurement of transverse natural frequencies is examined. The problem is solved by representing the crack by a massless rotational spring, simulating the out-of-plane transverse vibration only without solving the coupled torsional vibration and using the transfer matrix method for solution of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions are verified by experiments. The cracks considered are external, circumferentially oriented and have straight front. Pipes made of aluminium and mild steel are tested with water as internal fluid. Crack size to pipe thickness ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.57 and fluid (gauge) pressure in the range of 0 to 10 atmospheres are examined. The rotational spring stiffness is obtained by an inverse vibration analysis and deflection method. The details of the two methods are given. The results by the two methods are presented graphically and show good agreement. Crack locations are also determined by the inverse analysis. The maximum absolute error in the location is 13.80%. Experimentally determined variation of rotational spring stiffness with ratio of crack size to thickness is utilized to predict the crack sizes. The maximum absolute errors in prediction of crack size are 17.24% and 16.90% for aluminium and mild steel pipes respectively.
The standard numerical approximation of structural displacement field leads to the thickness-wise transverse shear stress distributions which are quite different from the exact ones. To overcome this inherent problem, an effective and reliable post-processing method is presented based on the strain recovery and the stress equilibrium, particularly for functionally graded cylindrical and conical elastic panels. The present method is developed in the framework of locking-free 2-D natural element method. Through the recovery of displacement component-wise derivatives, the element-wise discontinuous in-plane strain distributions are enhanced to be globally continuous and smoothened. And, using the continuous in-plane strains, the troublesome poor transverse shear stress distributions are enhanced through the thickness-wise integration of static equilibrium equations. The validity of present post-processing method is verified through the comparison with the reference solutions. In addition, the comparative experiments are also performed to investigate the difference between the present method and other available post-processing methods. The numerical results confirm that the present method provides the accurate transverse shear stress distributions which are consistent with the reference solutions and much better than other available methods.
The theory with hierarchical warping functions had been used to analyze composite thin-walled structure, laminated beam and had good results. In the present paper, a series of hierarchical warping functions are developed to analyze the cylindrical bending problems of composite lamina. These warping functions which refine through-the-thickness variation of displacements were composed of basic and corrective functions by taking into account of anisotropic, material discontinues, and transverse shear and normal strain. Then the hierarchical finite element method was used to form a numerical algorithm. The distribution of the displacements, in-plane stresses, transverse shear stresses and transverse normal stress for composite laminate were analyzed with the present model. The results show that the present model has precise mechanical response compared with the first deformation transverse theory and the corrective order affects the accuracy of result.

Fatigue tests of transverse fillet weldment were performed under out-of-plane bending loads. Significant increase of the fatigue strength was observed under out-of-plane bending loads, compared to the one under in-plane loads (axial loads). Applicability of the crack propagation analysis using LEFM for the surface crack of fillet weldment were investigated as well, in parallel with the fatigue tests. For the rational assessment of the fatigue strength of welded ship structures where combined stresses of the in-plane axial stress and the out-of-plane bending stress are induced simultaneously due to complexity of applied load and structural geometry, further investigation is recommended for the effect of the out-of-plane bending stress on the fatigue strength of weldment.
Orthotropic steel decks are manufactured by welding thin plates therefore it is inevitable that there are abundant works of welding process. On connection of transverse rib web, crossing point of longitudinal rib, transverse rib and deck plate and cut-out parts of transverse rib are the significant position of stress concentration phenomenon because of out of plane and oil-caning deformation caused by longitudinal rib distortion with shear force and distortion. In order to reduce the stress concentration phenomenon and improving fatigue performance at the crosing point and cut-out, structural analysis was performed considering the existence of scalop at conection and diaphragm which have same plane with transverse rib placed inside of longitudinal rib. Result o f the analysis show that there are the largest efect of stres concentration reduction when diaphragms are installed without scallop at connection, therefore these detail can improve the fatigue performance of orthotropic steel decks.
The aim of the present work is to study the nonlinear behavior of the laminated composite plates under transverse sinusoidal loading using a new inverse trigonometric shear deformation theory, where geometric nonlinearity in the Von-Karman sense is taken into account. In the present theory, in-plane displacements use an inverse trigonometric shape function to account the effect of transverse shear deformation. The theory satisfies the traction free boundary conditions and violates the need of shear correction factor. The governing equations of equilibrium and boundary conditions associated with present theory are obtained by using the principle of minimum potential energy. These governing equations are solved by eight nodded serendipity element having five degree of freedom per node. A square laminated composite plate is considered for the geometrically linear and nonlinear formulation. The numerical results are obtained for central deflections, in-plane stresses and transverse shear stresses. Finite element Codes are developed using MATLAB. The present results are compared with previously published results. It is concluded that the geometrically linear and nonlinear response of laminated composite plates predicted by using the present inverse trigonometric shape function is in excellent agreement with previously published results.
