A Case Study on the effects of Elephant Foot Method considering the rate of Changes in Tunnel Cross Section (터널 단면적 변화를 고려한 각부보강 영향성 평가)

  • In case of excavation of the tunnel under weak ground conditions, such as fault zone, leg pile reinforcement with the purpose of suppressing tunnel crown settlement and side wall displacement is commonly applied. There are convergence, crown settlement, leg settlement, and the axial force of leg as a main factor for confirming the safety of support considering the installation angle and length of leg pile reinforcement according to the increase in rate of change of tunnel cross-section. In particular, the influence of right corner settlement, among variables for safety confirmation during excavation, has been analyzed as the dominant factor in the most important priority management showing larger displacement tendency than the increase in rate of the cross-section. And, it was analyzed that the occurrence tendency of axial force on leg pile reinforcement showed the influence of behavior according to the friction support concept mechanism of the pile reinforcement rather than the increase in rate of tunnel cross-section, as it showed a small increase compared to the increase rate of the tunnel cross-section which did not show a great correlation from the viewpoint of the change of the axial force by the length of each leg pile reinforcement with regards to the change in rate of increase in tunnel cross-section. If a certain length of the leg pile reinforcement is selected based on the above grounds, even if the cross-section of the tunnel in poor ground condition is somewhat larger, it has been proved to be a more reasonable method considering the workability and economical efficiency by not extending the length of the leg pile reinforcement by force.

Ultrastructural Localization of ZnT3 and Zinc Ions in the Mouse Choroid Plexus (생쥐 맥락얼기에 분포하는 ZnT3 및 zinc 이온의 조직화학적 동정)

  • We have detected the murine zinc transporter, ZnT3, and zinc ions in the mouse choroid plexus by immunocytochemistry (ICC) and zinc selenium autometallography ($ZnSe^{AMG}$), respectively. BALB/c mice served as experimental animals. Routine floating ABC immunocytochemical procedures were used for the ZnT3 immunocytochemistry, and the mice were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with sodium selenide (10 mg/kg) for the zinc selenium autometallography. The choroid plexus showed weak immunoreactivity (Ir) for ZnT3. At high magnification, ZnT3-Ir was seen to be located in the choroid epithelium and the connective tissue of the capillaries. At the EM level, a high electron density of ZnT3-immunoreactivity was restricted to vesicle membranes as well as microvilli in the apical membrane. In contrast, immunostaining of ZnT3 was completely absent in the basolateral plasma membrane and other cell organelles. After silver enhancement, fine $ZnSe^{AMG}$ grains were observed in both the epithelial and endothelial cells of the choroid plexus. Few $ZnSe^{AMG}$ grains present in the cell bodies of the choroid epithelial cells were located in multivesicular bodies. It is striking that very many $ZnSe^{AMG}$ grains were observed in the endothelial cells of the capillaries. These findings establish the choroid plexus as a non-neuronal pool of zinc ions in the brain, although the functional significance of this pool is not clear. The choroid epithelium, however, may play an important role in the transportation of zinc between the CSF and brain tissue.

Optimum Design of Cross Section Lateral Damper Oil Seals for High Speed Railway Vehicle (고속 철도 차량 횡댐퍼 오일 씰의 형상 단면 최적설계)

  • The damper oil seal of a high-speed railway vehicle is made from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) in order to prevent lubricant from leaking into the damper and to stop harmful contaminants from entering the external environment while in service. Oil leakage through the seal primarily occurs from fatigue failure of the damper. Cumulative damage of the seal occurs due to the contact force between the rod and the rubber during movement due to track irregularities and cants, among other factors. Thus, the design of the oil seal should minimize the maximum principal strain at weak points. In this study, the optimal cross section of the damper oil seal was found using the multi-island genetic algorithm method to improve the durability of the damper. The optimal shape of the oil seal was derived using process automation and design optimization software. Nonlinear material properties for finite element analysis (FEA) of the rubber were determined by Marlow's model. The nonlinear FEA confirmed that the maximum principal strain at the oil leakage point was decreased 24% between the initial design and the optimum design.

Perceptions about the Professional Ethics of EMT (응급구조사 직업윤리에 대한 인식조사)

  • Complex ethical issues of Emergency Medical Techinician (EMT) out-of hospital emergency medical scene and the ER (Emergency Room) behaviors were studied. The survey was conducted by 500 EMT group members working in the field of ambulance work and general hospital and it was about their work ethics, discussions and solutions about the transferred patients, and ethics regarding Do Not Attempt Resuscitate (DNAR). The survey includes work ethics, awareness about the target job, a discussion on the transfer of patients, measures, and deathbed. Discussions about the patient's condition and diagnosis results were majorly absent during patient transportation at the emergency care scene. More than 90% of emergency care transfer were inappropriate. Sometimes, EMT working in the field facing morally unethical problems beyond their responsibility. When EMT, who can not make death diagnosis, received deathbed related DNAR issues, they gone through severe ethical conflicts. The institutional support and therapy for EMT was weak. In Korea, especially in the accident site, ethical issues education is more needed than DNAR prevalence of education and guidance. If ethics training and guidance are given to EMT, a lot of moral errors in the field can be resolved.

A Study on the Characteristics of Soil in the Asian Dust Source Regions of Mongolia (황사발원지 (몽골) 토양에 대한 특성 분석)

  • This study aims to identify the characteristics of soil in Mongolia, one of the major Asian dust sources that influence the Korean Peninsula. Soil particle size was analyzed and the result shows that sand (57.5~97.3%) was identified prominently in most regions, followed by silt (2.5~34.7%) and clay (0.0~7.8%). Soil pH of the covered regions were in the range 7.1~10.1, either weak alkaline or strong alkaline. Analysis of ion species in the soil samples exhibited that $Na^+$ ($91.9\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), $Cl^-$ ($65.9\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), and $Ca^{2+}$ ($53.5\;mg\;kg^{-1}$) were detected more in the soil than other species such as ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ($19.2\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), ${NO_3}^-$ ($46.6\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), ${NH_4}^+$ ($3.9\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), $K^+$ ($22.0\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), and $Mg^{2+}$ ($10.2\;mg\;kg^{-1}$). As for heavy metal content in the soil, concentrations of soil-borne metals including Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, and K tended to be high, while metals that come from manmade sources Pb, Cd, Cr, V, and Ni were remarkably low. The concentration of organic carbon (OC) was relatively high at $15.9\;{\mu}g\;mg^{-1}$, while elemental carbon (EC), directly released in the process of fossil fuel combustion, was not detected at all or found in very small amounts. The result indicates that pollution from manmade sources scarcely occurred. The analysis results from this study may contribute to improving modeling accuracy by providing input data for Asian dust prediction models, and be used as base data for determining the process of physiochemical transformation of Asian dust during long-range transport.

  • Korea's trade balance in service showed surplus in 2012 on the basis of BPM5. This is recorded by 14 years since 1999. This owes to decrease of deficit in tourism balance, increase of surplus in construction and transportation, and shift from deficit to surplus, even in small portion, in personal cultural recreational services balance. While externally the global economic growth becomes inactive and the Korean Won has appreciated, internally Korean service industry is very weak and is not equipped with international competitiveness. This study intends to look into service surplus items and services deficit items and to present measures that will be able to strengthen competitiveness in service industry. As a short case study, German and Japan was benchmarked, as they are the countries which are developed on the basis of manufacturing like Korea. And in this study, by analyzing surplus items and deficit items in trade balance sheet, it is attempted to suggest policies which would be available for strengthening service industry. As the service industry is a highly value-added one, it is necessary to designate promising categories and intensively foster as strategic industry. Service industry has their own characteristics distinguished with manufacturing goods. It has very different logistics and payment system with manufacturing industry. It means there must be independent support systems which reflect the nature of industrial classification in service industry. It is necessary to provide export support system, to organize export market development group, to support marketing, to set common logistics center, to support diplomatic means, to provide legal service and so on.

Design of Portable Welded-Nitrogen Vessel (11 kg, 10 L and 50 bar) for Shipbuilding (선박용 휴대형 질소용기(11 kg, 10 L 및 50 bar)의 두께 및 외형 설계)

  • The shipbuilding industry uses large stationary tanks to store low-pressure air, which is used to open and close large shut-off valves. However, when supplying air from the tank to a distant valve, there are problems related to the need for supplementary pipes and the pressure drop during transportation. In this study, a portable welded vessel for storing high-pressure nitrogen (11 kg, 10 L, and 50 bar) was designed to prevent air leakage and improve the convenience of workers. This pressure vessel was elliptical to reduce the number of welded parts, which are structurally weak. The thickness and ratio of the major and minor axes of the pressure vessel were calculated to verify its structure stability at the working pressure (50 bar), and that the proposed weight and capacity were satisfactory. The residual stress caused by the welding process was calculated by performing a transient thermal-structural coupled field analysis using the ANSYS parametric design language (APDL), and the fatigue life of the vessel was verified based on the Goodman criterion.

Spatial Concentration and Locational Characteristics of the Shipbuilding Industry in the South-East Region of Korea (우리나라 조선산업의 공간 집중과 입지 특성 : 동남권을 중심으로)

  • This paper aims to explore the spatial distribution and locational characteristics of the shipbuilding industry in the south-east region of Korea. The geography of the Korea's shipbuilding industry illustrates an absolute spatial concentration into the south-east region, including Gyeongnam, Busan and Ulsan. In view of the type of agglomeration, it is argued that the south-east region's shipbuilding industry has been evolved as an Advanced Hub & Spoke cluster, which is characterized by interconnected relationships between a couple of gigantic customer firms and the majority of small and medium-sized supplier firms. A survey on the locational factors of the firms presents that traditional locational factors, such as physical infrastructure, land, labour and industrial linkages, are more important than new economic geographical locational factors, such as knowledge, learning, innovation and networks. According to firm's evaluation of the Gyeongnam region's locational environments for the shipbuilding industry is, however, rather different to the result of firm's location decision factors. The shipbuilding firms in Gyeongnam see that the Gyeongnam region retains regional advantages in terms of agglomeration economies, geographical proximity to customers, the infrastructure of transportation and communication and the quality of life. On the contrary, firms recognize that the Gyeongnam region suffers from the lack of R&D and production workforce and a weak basis of industry-university -government networks.

A Study on the Enhancement of Maritime Education and Training to cope with IMO Member-state Audit Scheme (IMO 회원국 감사제도 대응을 위한 해기교육 강화방안에 관한 연구)

  • In spite of adoption of various IMO Conventions over the past, the reason why large vessel accidents related to human life and marine environment occur is that the IMO Conventions are not effectively implemented due to contravention of the conventions by flag states. In particular, the implementation of the conventions are not well being performed because some flag states having weak genuine link between them and vessels haven't set up proper personal and structural organizations in charge of maritime safety and marine environment protection. From this background, IMO Resolution A.946(23) on the voluntary IMO Member-state Audit Scheme was adopted at the 23rd Assembly in Nov. 2003 and the Scheme is expected to be executed compulsorily in 2015 through the adoption of the IMO Resolution A.1018(26) in Nov. 2009. Accordingly, this study examined outline of the IMO Member-state Audit Scheme and the Code for the Implementation of Mandatory IMO Instruments used for the audit standards of this scheme. In addition, this study reviewed the member-states' obligations and responsibilities according to the compulsory implementation of the member-state audit scheme in 2015. Based on this, this study suggested the enhancement measures for maritime education and training of maritime education institutions of the Republic of Korea to cope positively with compulsory implementation of the IMO Member-state Audit Scheme.

Characteristics and classification of landform relieves on mountains and valleys with bedrock types (기반암별 산지와 곡지의 지형 기복 특성과 유형)

  • This study analyzed characteristics of landform relieves on 12 bedrock whole(W) areas and 24 mountain(M) and valley(V) areas. Based on this result, characteristics and relations between bedrocks and landform relief were classified as follows. 1) gneiss-height M and granite-height W, M, V areas show active stream incision for uplift. However these areas have relatively low relief and grade compared to high altitude, because effect of denudation don't pass on whole slope. 2) gneiss-height W, V, gneiss-mid M, schist M, granite-mid M, volcanic rock W, M, sedimentary rock-height(conglomerate) W, M, V, sedimentary rock-mid (sandstone and shale) M, limestone W, M areas have active stream erosion and mass movement, but landform relieves are on the high side, because these have resistant bedrock and geological structure against weathering and erosion. 3) gneiss-mid W, V, schist W, V, granite-mid W, V, volcanic rock V, sedimentary rock-mid W, V, sedimentary rock-low(shale) M, limestone V areas landform relieves are on the low side, because these have weak resistance and active weathering, mass movement, erosion, transportation and deposit. 4) gneiss-low W, M, V, granite-low W, M, V, sedimentary rock-low W, V areas landform relieves are very low, because these don't have active erosion and mass movement as costal area with low altitude.
