  • Due to continuous climate change, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are gradually accumulating, and various extreme weather events occurring all over the world are a serious threat to human sustainability. Countries around the world are making efforts to convert energy sources from traditional fossil fuels to renewable energy. Hydrogen energy is a clean energy source that exists infinitely on Earth, and can be used in most areas that require energy, such as power generation, transportation, commerce, and household sectors. A fuel cell, a device that produces electric and thermal energy by using hydrogen energy, is a key field to respond to climate change, and major countries around the world are spurring the development of core fuel cell technology. In this paper, research trends in China, the United States, Germany, Japan, and Korea, which have the highest number of papers related to fuel cells, are analyzed through keyword network analysis.

  • Many countries are striving to reduce carbon emissions with the goal of net zero by 2050. Accordingly, vehicles are rapidly being electrified to reduce greenhouse gases in the transportation sector. However, many organizations predict that internal combustion engines of LDV (light-duty vehicle) will exist even in 2050, and it is difficult to electrify aircraft and large ships in a short time. Therefore, synthetic fuel (i.e., e-Fuel) that can reduce carbon emissions and replace existing fossil fuels is in the spotlight. The e-Fuel refers to a fuel synthesized by using carbon obtained through various carbon capture technologies and green hydrogen produced by eco-friendly renewable energy. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the injection and spray characteristics of the simulated e-Gasoline. We mixed the hydrocarbon fuel components according to the composition ratio of the synthetic fuel produced based on the FT(Fischer-Tropsch) process. As a result of injection rate measurement, simulated e-Gasoline showed no significant difference in injection delay and injection period compared to standard gasoline. However, due to the low vapor pressure of the simulated e-Gasoline, the spray tip penetration (STP) was lower, and the size of spray droplets was larger than that of traditional gasoline.

  • Microalgae are aquatic microorganisms capable of photosynthetic growth using water, carbon dioxide and sunlight, and can replace petroleum for transportation. It is receiving great attention as a potential next-generation biological resource. The microalgae biodiesel production process is largely based on the development of highly efficient strains and mass production. It consists of cultivation, harvesting, oil extraction, fuel conversion and by-product utilization. Currently, microalgae diesel is 3-5 times more expensive than petroleum diesel. However, with the optimization of each element technology and the development of integrated systems, not only biofuels, but also industrial materials, wastewater treatment, and greenhouse gases As application expands to various fields such as abatement, the timing of commercialization may be brought forward. Oil prices have recently fallen due to the influence of sail gas. Although there has been a significant drop, global warming is an urgent challenge for current and future generations. In particular, Korea, which does not have oil resources, We must always prepare for political environmental changes, high oil prices, and energy crises. In this paper, the need for eco-friendly biofuel for carbon dioxide conversion. In addition to research trends, domestic and international research trends, and economic prospects, the concept of microalgae and the element technologies of the biodiesel production process are briefly discussed introduced.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS FOR NUCLEAR ENERGY BESIDES ELECTRICITY GENERATION: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

  • Energy supply is increasingly showing up as a major issue for electricity supply, transportation, settlement, and process heat industrial supply including hydrogen production. Nuclear power is part of the solution. For electricity supply, as exemplified in Finland and France, the EPR brings an immediate answer; HTR could bring another solution in some specific cases. For other supply, mostly heat, the HTR brings a solution inaccessible to conventional nuclear power plants for very high or even high temperature. As fossil fuels costs increase and efforts to avoid generation of Greenhouse gases are implemented, a market for nuclear generated process heat will be developed. Following active developments in the 80's, HTR have been put on the back burner up to 5 years ago. Light water reactors are widely dominating the nuclear production field today. However, interest in the HTR technology was renewed in the past few years. Several commercial projects are actively promoted, most of them aiming at electricity production. ANTARES is today AREVA's response to the cogeneration market. It distinguishes itself from other concepts with its indirect cycle design powering a combined cycle power plant. Several reasons support this design choice, one of the most important of which is the design flexibility to adapt readily to combined heat and power applications. From the start, AREVA made the choice of such flexibility with the belief that the HTR market is not so much in competition with LWR in the sole electricity market but in the specific added value market of cogeneration and process heat. In view of the volatility of the costs of fossil fuels, AREVA's choice brings to the large industrial heat applications the fuel cost predictability of nuclear fuel with the efficiency of a high temperature heat source tree of Greenhouse gases emissions. The ANTARES module produces 600 MWth which can be split into the required process heat, the remaining power drives an adapted prorated electric plant. Depending on the process heat temperature and power needs, up to 80% of the nuclear heat is converted into useful power. An important feature of the design is the standardization of the heat source, as independent as possible of the process heat application. This should expedite licensing. The essential conditions for success include: ${\bullet}$ Timely adapted licensing process and regulations, codes and standards for such application and design ${\bullet}$ An industry oriented R&D program to meet the technological challenges making the best use of the international collaboration. Analysis of the Importance of Eco-friendly Ship Dissemination Policy using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (계층분석법(AHP)을 이용한 친환경선박 보급정책의 중요도 분석)

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is tightening environmental regulations in the shipping sector to reduce air pollutants such as greenhouse gases emitted from ships. Meanwhile, the paradigm of the shipbuilding and shipping industries is shifting toward eco-friendly and high-efficiency ships worldwide. The Republic of Korea is also promoting a policy to expand the supply of eco-friendly ships from 2020 to disseminate them. In this article, a survey was conducted with 12 experts on the government's eco-friendly ship supply policy, and the priority of the policy was evaluated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). As a result of the comprehensive evaluation of the priorities for six priority tasks, "Securing the world's leading technology for future eco-friendly ships" for the development of carbon-free and low carbon ships was the highest. This study, which analyzed the importance of eco-friendly ship policies through AHP analysis, can be used as data to preemptively respond to international marine environmental regulations and to improve policy execution efficiency such as budget allocation and policy development regarding protecting national shipping and shipbuilding industries.

Changes in Emissions of Highway Sections according to the GHG Reduction Target (온실가스 감축목표에 따른 고속도로 구간 배출량 변화 연구)

  • Purpose: Greenhouse gases are one of the major causes of global warming, a global disaster. It aims to improve how effective the GHG reduction policy, which is the main cause of global warming in the transportation sector, has been effective on the highway and how to calculate GHG emissions. Method: Using the DSRC raw data, we estimate the emissions of Namhae Expressway (Yeongam-Suncheon) from 2017 to 2019 in two ways, a macro method (conventional) and a micro method (individual vehicle). Result: As a result of calculating the emission of the highway, the result was far exceeding the estimated emission, and it was found that when the calculation was performed for each vehicle, it was underestimated by more than 20%. Conclusion: If more emissions are continuously emitted than expected in the current transportation sector, additional emission reduction policies are needed to achieve the current greenhouse gas reduction targets. In addition, in the calculation of emissions, which is the basis of this policy, analysis was conducted for each individual vehicle using the current DSRC raw data, but using GPS afterwards will enable precise emission calculation through a more microscopic analysis.

Development of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory and Evaluation of GHG Reduction Plans of Kangwon National University (대학의 온실가스 인벤토리 구축 및 감축잠재량 평가 - 강원대학교를 중심으로)

  • Greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions from Kangwon National University was estimated to be 21,054 ton $CO_2$-eq in 2009, which was approximately 7% higher than that in 2005. Emissions from electricity usage in Scope 2 contributed to the upward annual trend of GHG emissions, comprising about 54.3% of the total GHG emissions. On the other hand, GHG emissions from Scope 1 and Scope 3 contributed approximately 25.3% and 20.4%, respectively. Various GHG reduction plans were also introduced and evaluated in this study. Among three reduction plans including LED substitution, improvement of transportation efficiency, and green campus action plan, the green campus action plan derived the most significant GHG reduction of 5.3% of total emissions. Estimated total reduced GHG emission was $1,570ton\;CO_2-eq\;yr^{-1}$ with all three reduction plans.

  • This article provides a panoramic overview of the state-of-the-art technologies in the field of solid-state hydrogen storage methods. The emerging solid-state hydrogen storage techniques, such as nanostructured carbon materials, metal organic framework (MOFs), metal and inter-metal hydrides, clathrate hydrates, complex chemical hydride are discussed. The hydrogen storage capacity of the solid-sate hydrogen storage materials increases in proportion to the surface area of the solid materials. Also, it is believed that new functional nanostructured materials will offer far-reaching solutions to the development of on-board hydrogen storage system for the application of the transportation vehicles.

Environmental Impacts on Concentrate Feed Supply Systems for Japanese Domestic Livestock Industry as Evaluated by a Life-cycle Assessment Method

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare the environmental load of two different concentrate feed supply systems to the Japanese domestic livestock industry using the Life-cycle Assessment (LCA) method. The current system was defined as that requiring 11.469 million tons of corn imported from the US by sea transport and supplied as concentrate feed to the Japanese domestic livestock industry. The new system proposed by Kaku et al. in 2004 was defined as where 802,830 tons of US imported corn would not be planted in US and would be replaced by barley planted in 278 thousand ha of Japanese domestic land left fallow for the past year. In this case, 909,000 tons of domestic harvest barley would have been supplied as concentrate feed to the Japanese domestic livestock industry in 2000. The activities taken into account within the two system boundaries were three stages: concentrate feed production, feed transportation and gas emission from the soil by chemical fertilizer. Finished compost was regarded as organic fertilizer and was put instead of chemical fertilizers within the system boundary. Adoption of this new concentrate feed supply system by the Japanese domestic livestock industry could reduce 78,462 tons $CO_2$-equivalents of global warming potential, 347 tons $SO_2$-equivalents of acidification potential, 54 tons $PO_4$-equivalents of eutrophication potential and 0.842 million GJ as energy consumption below 2,000 levels. This LCA study comparing two Japanese domestic livestock concentrate feed supply systems showed that the stage of feed transport contributed most to global warming and the stage of emission from the soil contributed most to acidification and eutrophication. The Japanese domestic livestock industry could participate in emissions trading with $CO_2$-equivalents reduced by shifting from some imported US corn as a concentrate feed to domestic barley planted in land left fallow. In that case the Japanese government could launch emissions trading in accordance with Kyoto Protocol in the future.

KEPCO-China Huaneng Post-combustion CO2 Capture Pilot Test and Cost Evaluation

  • The proprietary post-combustion CO2 solvent (KoSol) developed by the Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) was applied at the Shanghai Shidongkou CO2 Capture Pilot Plant (China Huaneng CERI, capacity: 120,000 ton CO2/yr) of the China Huaneng Group (CHNG) for performance evaluation. The key results of the pilot test and data on the South Korean/Chinese electric power market were used to calculate the predicted cost of CO2 avoided upon deployment of CO2 capture technology in commercial-scale coal-fired power plants. Sensitivity analysis was performed for the key factors. It is estimated that, in the case of South Korea, the calculated cost of CO2 avoided for an 960 MW ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant is approximately 35~44 USD/tCO2 (excluding CO2 transportation and storage costs). Conversely, applying the same technology to a 1,000 MW USC coal-fired power plant in Shanghai, China, results in a slightly lower cost (32~42 USD/tCO2).
