  • The solute transport in a two-dimensional heterogeneous porous medium is numerically studied by using a random walk particle tracking (RWPT) method. Lognormally isotropic hydraulic conductivity fields are generated by using the turning band methods with mean zero and four different values of standard deviation. The numerical transport experiments are carried out to investigate the large time and spatial effects of the variable pore velocity field on solute plumes. The behavior of the solute plume through numerical simulations is presented in terms of longitudinal and transverse spatial moments: displacement of center-of-mass, plume spread variance and skewness coefficient. It was observed that the dispersive behavior of the solute plume is strongly affected by the degree of heterogeneity in the flow domain.

  • The influence of the order-disorder structural transition on the magnetic and mageto-optical, and transport properties of Fe-Al and Co-Al alloy films has been investigated. The disordered states in the alloy films were prepared by vapor quenching deposition on glass substrates cooled by liquid nitrogen. The experimental study of the magento-optical properties of the ordered and disordered Fe-Al and Co-Al alloy films has been carried out in 1.05-5.0 eV energy range at room temperature. The transport properties have been measured in 2-300K temperature range with and without magnetic field of 0.5T. The influence of the order-disorder structural transition on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties was discussed by using the effective medium approximation and the structural defect approach. That on the temperature dependence of the resistivity was analyzed in a framework of the partial localization of the electronic states and the variable range hopping conductivity.

  • Globalization and regionalization are major trends in the international economic system. The severe competition among countries has signalled the need for a new international trade system as prescribed by the WTO, which regulates international trade practices. Additionally, expanding the activities and role of the Pan-Yellow Sea area in the world has a very important function in terms of regional cooperation and logistics environment. In this paper, the trading conditions and shipping transport problems of the Pan-Yellow Sea area (North-East Asia) were investigated. Shipping transport conditions in the Pan-Yellow Sea area, particularly Korea-China routes, were surveyed as well. A new Incheon-China container liner route was suggested as a partial remedy to some of the shipping transport problems of the Pan-Yellow Sea Area (North-East Asia). The Incheon-China Container Liner route is more efficient than Pusan and Pyungtaek Ports or the car ferry route to China in terms of transport time and expense. The transport burden indicator which includes the time and expense of transport, can be a useful tool in comparing these routes. Accordign to the transport burden indicator, the Incheon-China Container Liner route is more efficient than the Pusan, Pyungtaek, or car ferry routes. To establish a successful liner route between the ports of Inchon and China, there is a need to prepare three measures that contain short-term medium-term and long-term strategies. Furthermore, these measures should be prepared and adopted in phases, in accordance with considerations of future conditions for shipping and logistics in the Pan-Yellow Sea area.

  • Transepithelial transport of tetraethylammonium (TEA) was studied in monolayers of opossum kidney cells cultured on permeable membrane filters. $[^{14}C]-TEA$ was transported across the OK cell monolayer from basolateral to apical side by a saturable process which can be stimulated by acidification of the apical medium. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant $(K_{m})$ and the maximum velocity$(V_{max})$ for the transport were $41\;{\mu}M$ and 147 pmole/ mg protein/ min, respectively. The transport was significantly inhibited by unlabelled TEA, amiloride, cimetidine, choline, and mepiperphenidol added to the basolateral side at 1 mM and was slightly inhibited by 5 mM $N_{1}-methylnicotinamide\;(NMN).$ Unlabelled TEA added to the apical side stimulated the $basolateral-to-apical\;{^{14}C}-TEA$ transport, suggesting that the TEA self-exchange mechanism was involved at the apical membrane. Sulfhydryl reagents such as ${\rho}-chloromercuribenzoic\;acid\;(PCMB)\;and \;{\rho}-chloro-mercuribenzene\;sulfonate \;(PCMBS)$ and carboxyl reagents such as N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimidem (DCCD) and N-ethoxy-carbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-quinoline(EEDQ) inhibited the TEA transport at both the basolateral and apical membranes of the OK cell monolayer. These results suggest that OK cell monolayers possess a vectorial transport system for organic cations which is similar to that for organic cation secretion in the renal proximal tubule.

  • A numerical model for nuclide migration through fractured rock media has been developed. Nuclide transport with groundwater in rock fissures and the diffusion of nuclides into rock matrix are considered one-dimensionally . In the safety assessment of the repository for radioactive waste, this one-dimensional model by the finite-difference scheme, which enables us not only to use more realistic boundary conditions but also to model the nonhomogeneous rock medium as the multilayered media, can be used effectively with the analytical mode. The solution by the numerical model will be verified analytically, and then extended to the double-layered rock medium transport model.

  • Ionic liquid (IL) is a salt presents in a liquid form at room temperature. Recently, it attracts huge attention due to its possibilities as a clean solvent, electrolyte, and catalyst. In the present work, the charging behavior of six different ILs were investigated using droplet contact charging phenomenon in a dielectric medium. Basically, the charging of an IL droplet can be explained by a perfect conductor theory. However, there were several different features depending on the species of ions of ILs, which requires rigorous molecular level modeling of charge transport through electrochemical reaction of IL. We hope the present results contribute to build up fundamental understanding of electrochemical charge transport of IL.

  • Much attention has been given to predict the near-field mass transfer of a single radioactive species from a waste solid into surrounding porous medium. But only limited considerations have been given to predict the coupled mass transfer of species with a radioactive decay chain. In this study we present an analysis assuming that the members of a decay chain dissolve congruently with a solubility-limited matrix. We give general, non-recursive analytic solutions for the transport of a radioactive decay chain in a finite porous medium when nuclides are released congruently with the matrix. As an illustration we consider the decay chain $^{234}$ Ulongrightarrow$^{230}$ Thlongrightarrow$^{226}$ Ra from spent fuel. These solutions may be useful and potentially important in performance assessment of radioactive waste repositories.

  • The numerical simulation of point-to-plane discharge of nitrogen at medium pressure has been achieved by a quasi-2d numerical model. In the model, we calculate the distributions of electric charges which are varying as temporal and space and determine the electric field depending on space charge distribution by solving Poisson's equation. The continuity equations are treated numerically by using FCT (Flux-Corrected Transport) Algorithm and FEM (Finite Element Method). The numerical simulation results make us to understand the physical characteristics of nitrogen discharge at 50 torr. The comparison with experimental results[1] shows a good qualitative agreement.

  • Nitrogen is one of the most important mineral elements for plant growth. We studied the functional roles of Oryza sativa DNA BINDING WITH ONE FINGER 18 (OsDOF18) in controlling ammonium uptake. The growth of null mutants of OsDOF18 was retarded in a medium containing ammonium as the sole nitrogen source. In contrast, those mutants grew normally in a medium with nitrate as the sole nitrogen source. The gene expression was induced by ammonium but not by nitrate. Uptake of ammonium was lower in osdof18 mutants than in the wild type, while that of nitrate was not affected by the mutation. This indicated that OsDOF18 is involved in regulating ammonium transport. Among the 10 ammonium transporter genes examined here, expression of OsAMT1;1, OsAMT1;3, OsAMT2;1, and OsAMT4;1 was reduced in osdof18 mutants, demonstrating that the ammonium transporter genes function downstream of OsDOF18. Genes for nitrogen assimilation were also affected in the mutants. These results provide evidence that OsDOF18 mediates ammonium transport and nitrogen distribution, which then affects nitrogen use efficiency.

  • The growth and extent of the local pressure field at any point is of primary importance as it supplies the driving force for the local wind circulation which causes a medium-range transport of air pollutants. The local pressure field is produced by the variation of temperature in the lower layers of the atmosphere, and is called the thermal wave. The thermal wave is influenced by the difference in the diurnal variations between two regions with different surface condition, for example land and sea. This difference produces the land- and sea-breeze phenomenon, and brings corresponding variations in the form of the thermal wave. Daytime temperature over the inland area (Daegu) was higher than that of the coastal area (Busan). The temperature difference reached about 5~6$^{\circ}C$ in the late afternoon(30-31 May 1999). The low pressure system of Daegu was most fully developed at the time. In this study, we investigated the possibility of thermal low onset around Daegu in summer with an analytical model. The topography effect was neglected in the model. We could predict a thermal low-pressure of about 3.4hPa at Daegu with wide flat land surface, when the inland area is about 6K warmer than the coastal area temperature. The pressure decrease is somewhat less than the observed value(4~5 hPa).
