Perfluorinated compounds(PFCs), an emerging environmental pollutant, are environmentally persistent and bioaccumulative organic compounds that possess a toxic impact on human health and ecosystems. PFCs are distributed widely in environment media including groundwater, surface water, soil and sediment. PFCs in contaminated solid can potentially leach into groundwater. Therefore, understanding PFCs partitioning between the aqueous phase and solid phase is important for the determination of their fate and transport in the environment. In this study, the sorption equilibrium batch and kinetic experiment of PFCs were carried out to estimated the sorption coefficient(Kd) and the fraction between aqueous-solid phase partition, respectively. Sorption branches of the PFDA(Perfluoro-n-decanoic acid), PFNA(Perfluoro-n-nonanoic acid), PFOA(Perfluoro-n-octanoic acid), PFOS(Perfluoro-1-octane sulfonic acid) and PFHxS(Perfluoro-1-hexane sulfonic acid) isotherms were nearly linear, and the estimated Kd was as follow: PFDA(1.50) > PFOS(1.49) > PFNA(0.81) > PFHxS(0.45) > PFOA(0.39). The sorption kinetics of PFDA, PFNA, PFOA, PFOS and PFHxS onto soil were described by a biexponential adsorption model, suggesting that a fast transport into the surface layer of soil, followed by two-step diffusion transport into the internal water and/or organic matter of soil. Shorter times(<20hr) were required to achieve equilibrium and fraction for adsorption on solid(F1, F2) increased with perfluorinated carbon chain length and sulfonate compounds in this study. Overall, our results suggested that not only the perfluorocarbon chain length, but also the terminal functional groups are important contributors to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between PFCs and soils, and organic matter in soils significantly affects adsorption maximum capacity than kinetic rate.
Groundwater contamination is seeking a lot of attention due to constant degradation of water by landfills and waste lagoons. In many cases heterogeneous soil system is encountered and hence, a finite element model is developed to solve the advection-dispersion equation for layered soil system as FEM is a robust tool for modelling problems of heterogeneity and complex geometries. Recently developed Meshfree methods have advantage of eliminating the mesh and construct approximate solutions and are observed that they perform effectively as compared to conventional FEM. In the present study, both FEM and Meshfree method are used to simulate phenomenon of contaminant transport in one dimension. The results obtained are agreeing with the values in literature and hence the model is further used for predicting the transport of contaminants. Parametric study is done by changing the dispersion coefficient, average velocity, geochemical reactions, height of leachate and height of liner for obtaining suitability.

Contaminant retardation factor is derived from the colloidal and contaminant transport equations for a four-phase porous medium: an aqueous phase, two mobile colloidal phases, and a solid matrix. It is assumed that the contaminant sorption to solid matrix and colloidal particles and the colloidal deposition on solid matrix follow the linear isotherms. The behavior of the contaminant retardation factor in response to the change of model parameters is examined employing the experimental data of Magee et al. (1991) and Jenkins and Lion (1993). In the four-phase system, the contaminant retardation factor is determined by both the contaminant association with solid matrix and colloidal particles and the colloidal deposition on solid matrix. The contaminant mobility is enhanced when the affinity of contaminants to mobile colloids increases. In addition, as the affinity of colloids to solid matrix decreases, the contaminant mobility increases.
To properly manage and remediate groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene (TCE), it is necessary to assess natural attenuation processes of contaminants in the aquifer along with investigation of contamination history and aquifer characterization. This study evaluated natural attenuation processes of TCE at an industrial site in Korea by delineating hydrogeochemical characteristics along the flow path of contaminated groundwater, by calculating reaction rate constants for TCE and its degradation products, and by using geochemical and reactive transport modeling. The monitoring data showed that TCE tended to be transformed to cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and further to vinyl chloride (VC) via microbial reductive dechlorination, although the degree was not too significant. According to our modeling results, the temporal and spatial distribution of the TCE plume suggested the dominant role of biodegradation in attenuation processes. This study can provide a useful method for assessing natural attenuation processes in the aquifer contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons and can be applied to other sites with similar hydrological, microbiological, and geochemical settings.
Nutrient losses, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, in agricultural runoff can contaminate surface and ground water, leading to eutrophication. Thus, erosion control is crucial to minimizing nutrient losses from agricultural land. Assessments of various erosion control practices were carried out under various cropping system, soil management practices, and slope conditions by means of a lysimeter study and under artificial rainfall. Soil and nutrient losses were monitored in a small agricultural field to evaluate the soil conservation practices. Nutrient losses occur in runoff and leachate (dissolved nutrient) and in sediments (particulate nutrient). Dissolved nitrates accounted for the majority (about 90%) of nitrate transport within the soil. Particulate phosphate in sediments represented the majority (60% to 67%) of phosphate transport. Recently, engineering and agronomic erosion-control practices haver been used to reduce erosion problems in fields on slopes. These practices reduced soil loss, runoff, and nutrient loss to 1/6, 1/2,and 1/3 their original levels, respectively. Bioavailable particulate phosphate in sediments represents a variable but longterm source of phosphate for algae. Dissolved nitrate and phosphate are immediately available for algal uptake, so reducing fluxes of these nutrients should also reduce the risk of eutrophication.
Simplified analytical solutions are developed for the dynamic analyses of an axially loaded pile foundation embedded in a transverse-isotropic, fluid-filled, poro-visco-elastic soil with rigid substratum. The pile is modeled as a viscoelastic Rayleigh-Love rod, while the surrounding soil is regarded as a transversely isotropic, liquid-saturated, viscoelastic, porous medium of which the mechanical behavior is represented by the Boer's poroelastic media model and the fractional derivative model. Upon the separation of variables, the frequency-domain responses for the impedance function of the pile top, and the vertical displacement and the axial force along the pile shaft are gained. Then by virtue of the convolution theorem and the inverse Fourier transform, the time-domain velocity response of the pile head is derived. The presented solutions are validated, compared to the existing solution, the finite element model (FEM) results, and the field test data. Parametric analyses are made to show the effect of the soil anisotropy and the excitation frequency on the pile-soil dynamic responses.
Pile foundations of existing bridges lie in soil and water environment for long term and endure relatively heavy vertical loads, thus prone to damages, especially after stricken by external forces, such as earthquake, collision, soil heap load and etc., and the piles may be injured to certain degrees as well. There is a relatively complete technical system for quality inspection of new bridge pile foundations without structures on the top. However, there is no mature technical standard in the engineering community for the non-destructive testing technology specific to the existing bridge pile foundations. The quality of bridge pile foundations has always been a major problem that plagues bridge maintenance. On the basis of many years' experiences in test engineering and theoretical studies, this study developed a new type of detection technology and equipment for the existing bridge piles.
The objective of this study was to develop a mechanistically based mathematical model that would consider the interdependence of VOCs transport, microbial activity, and sorptive interactions in a moist, unsaturated soil. Because the focus of the model was on description of natural attenuation, the advective VOCs transport that is induced in engineered remediation processes such as vapor extraction was not considered. The utility of the model was assessed through its ability to describe experimental observations from diffusion experiments using toluene as a representative VOCs in well-defined soil columns that contained a toluene degrading bacterium, Pseudomonas putida G7 md Fl, as the sole active microbial species. The gas-liquid mass-transfer was found to be a key parameter controlling the ability of bacteria to degrade VOCs. This finding indicates that soil size and geometry are likely to be important parameters in assessing the possible success of natural attenuation of VOCs in contaminated unsaturated soils. Therefore we found that Pseudomonas putida G7 and Fl were very effective to remove of refractory pollutants such as toluene in soil by Bio-filter

The Boroo area in Mongolia is known to have been contaminated with heavy metals due to irregular gold mining activities and the release of mercury from gold extraction process. Soil and mine tailings were collected to analyze contamination patterns of heavy metals in the Boroo area. Analyses revealed that mercury, arsenic and cadmium concentrations exceeded the regulatory standard of the nation (Mongolia National Standard). In case of mercury, about 80% of the survey area was over the limit and the concentration distribution heavily influenced by influx of mercury through water transport. Soil contamination by arsenic was most severe that the concentration exceeded the regulatory limit in almost entire survey area, showing peak concentrations at nearby streams and river along with ore processing facilities. For cadmium, about 20% of the survey area was over the limit with the concentration distribution similar to that of arsenic.
In this study, the compressive strength of cement stabilized soil was predicted using the electrical resistivity measurement. The effects of the water to cement (w/c) ratio and recovered Carbon Black (rCB) contents were examined. A series of electrical resistivity and compressive strength tests were conducted on two types of stabilized soil after 28 days of curing. Multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR) analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between the compressive strength and the electrical resistivity in terms of the rCB, Cu (uniformity coefficient), and w/c ratio. The results showed that the w/c ratio and Cu have a strong influence on the compressive strength and electrical resistivity of the cement stabilized soil compared to the rCB content. The use of a small amount of rCB led to a decrease in the void space in the specimen and was attributed to the increase strength and decrease electrical resistivity. A high w/c ratio also induced a low electrical resistivity and compressive strength, whereas 3% rCB in the cemented soil provided the optimum strength for all w/c ratios. Finally, a prediction equation for the compressive strength using the electrical resistivity measurement was suggested based on its reliability, time effectiveness, non-destructiveness, and cost-effectiveness.
