To understand and compare tracer transport in fractured and porous media. multiple tracer tests were conducted in Wonju and Uiwang sites. The target media were fractured in Wonju site and porous in Uiwang site. It was known that groundwater flow for the two hydrogeologic systems could be represented using a EPM approach. However, the tracer transport in the two aquifer systems was greatly different. In this study, we analyzed the different tracer transport behavior in the two systems, from which our understanding of the tracer dispersion was greatly enhanced. we used bromide and chloride as tracers.
For landfill monitoring and aftercare, long-term prognoses of emission and deformation behaviour are required. Landfills may be considered as heterogeneous porous soil-like structures, in which flow and transport processes of gases and liquids interact with local material degradation and mechanical deformation of the solid skeleton. Therefore, in the framework of continuous porous media mechanics a model is developed that permits the investigation of coupled mechanical, hydraulical and biochemical processes in municipal solid waste landfills.
In this paper, we show the convergence of approximate solutions to the convective porous media equation using methodology developed in [8]. First, we obtain the approximate transport equation for the given convective porous media equation. Then using the averaging lemma, we obtain the convergence.
The objects of this paper are to formulated a model for the transport of a chain of radioactive waste products in a fractured porous medium, to devise an effective and efficient numerical method for approximating the solution of the model, and to demonstrated the convergence of the numerical method. The formulation begins from a model in an unfractured (single porosity) medium, passes through a double porosity model in a fractured medium, and ends with a modified single porosity model that takes the relevant time scales of the flow and the nuclear decay.
Spatial moment analysis has been performed on the concentration of the first species in a multispecies solute transport in porous media. Finite difference numerical technique was used in obtaining the solute concentration. A constant continuous source of contaminant was injected at the inlet of the domain. Results suggest that the decaying of solute mass increases as the magnitude of mean fluid velocity increases. The dispersion coefficient is highly time dependent under decaying of solutes with a complex behavior of mixing of solutes. The solute mobility and mixing varies non-linearly with time during its initial period, while the same ceases with higher decay rates of the first species much faster.
The groundwater has been a major source of water supply throughout the ages. Around 50% of the rural as well as urban population in the developing countries like India depends on groundwater for drinking. The groundwater is also an important source in the agriculture and industrial sector. In many parts of the world, groundwater resources are under increasing threat from growing demands, wasteful use and contamination. A good planning and management practices are needed to face this challenge. A key to the management of groundwater is the ability to model the movement of fluids and contaminants in the subsurface environment. It is obvious that the contaminant source activities cannot be completely eliminated and perhaps our water bodies will continue to serve as receptors of vast quantities of waste. In such a scenario, the goal of water quality protection efforts must necessarily be the control and management of these sources to ensure that released pollutants will be sufficiently attenuated within the region of interest and the quality of water at points of withdrawal is not impaired. In order to understand the behaviour of contaminant transport through different types of media, several researchers are carrying out experimental investigations through laboratory and field studies. Many of them are working on the analytical and numerical studies to simulate the movement of contaminants in soil and groundwater of the contaminant transport. With the advent of high power computers especially, a numerical modelling has gained popularity and is indeed of particular relevance in this regard. This paper provides the state of the art of contaminant transport and reviews the allied research works carried out through experimental investigation or using the analytical solution and numerical method. The review involves the investigation in respect of both, saturated and unsaturated, porous media.

In unsaturated porous media, the air-water interface (AWI) plays an important role in removing of biocolloids such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoan (oo)cysts. In this study, four models related to calculation of specific AWI area are analyzed to determine the appropriate model, and the selected models are verified using the previously reported experimental data. The results indicate that the modified model from Niemet et al. (2002) is the most appropriate tool for calculating the specific AWI area using the van Genuchten (1980) parameters obtained from the water retention curve. Hence, it is expected that this model could be used to quantitatively determine the attachment of biocolloids to AWI in the transport modeling of biocolloids in unsaturated porous media.
The present study deals with the numerical modelling for the one dimensional contaminant transport through saturated homogeneous and stratified porous media using meshfree method. A numerical algorithm based on element free Galerkin method is developed. A one dimensional form of the advectivediffusive transport equation for homogeneous and stratified soil is considered for the analysis using irregular nodes. A Fortran program is developed to obtain numerical solution and the results are validated with the available results in the literature. A detailed parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of certain key parameters. Effect of change of dispersion, velocity, porosity, distribution coefficient and thickness of layer is studied on the concentration of the contaminant.

Solute transport through a groove is affected by its vortices. Our laboratory and numerical experiments of dye transport through a single axisymmetric groove reveal evidence of enhanced spreading and mixing by the vortex, i.e., a new kind of dispersion called here the vortex dispersion. The uptake and release of contaminants by vortices in porous media is affected by the flow Reynolds number. The larger the flow Reynolds number, the larger is the vortex dispersion, and the larger is the mass-transfer rate between the mobile zone and the vortex. The long known dependence of the mass-transfer rate between the mobile and "immobile" zones in porous media on flow velocity can be explained by the presence of vortices in the "immobile" zone and their uptake and release of contaminants.
The groundwater is a very important part of the environment and must be protected for the benefit of the present and future generation. The contamination of soil and groundwater by chemicals has become an increasing concern in the recent past. These chemicals enter the groundwater system by a wide variety of mechanisms, including accidental spills, land disposal of domestic and industrial wastes and application of agricultural fertilizers. Once introduced into an aquifer, these contaminants will be transported by flowing groundwater and may degrade water quality at nearby wells and streams. For improving the management and protection of groundwater resources, it is important to first understand the various processes that control the transport of contaminants in groundwater. Predictions of the fate of groundwater contaminants can be made to assess the effect of these chemicals on local water resources and to evaluate the effectiveness of remedial actions. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the behaviour of solute transport through porous media using laboratory experiments. Sodium chloride was used as a conservative chemical in the experiment. During the experiment, pulse boundary condition and continuous boundary conditions were used. Experimental results have been presented for conservative solute transport in the sand. The pattern of the break through curve remains almost same in all the cases of varying flow rate and initial concentration of conservative chemical.
