Contaminant transport in porous media is characterized by solving an advection-dispersion equation(ADE). The ADE can cover equilibrium phenomena of interest, which include sorption, decay, and chemical reactions. Among these phenomena, sorption mechanism is described by several types of sorption isotherm. If we assume the sorption isotherm as linear, the solution of ADE can be easily procured. However, if we consider the sorption isotherm as non-linear isotherm like a Dual Reactive Domain Model (DRDM), the resulting differential equation becomes non-linear. In this case, the solution of ADE cannot be easily acquired by an analytic method. In this paper, we present the numerical analysis of ADE using a DRDM. The results reveal that even if sorption data may be fitted well using linear or non-linear isotherm, the characteristics of contaminant transport of the two cases are different from each other. To be concrete, the retardation of linear isotherm has stronger effect than that of the DRDM. As the non-linearity of sorption isotherm increases, the difference of retardation effects of the two cases becomes larger. For a pulse source, the maximum concentration of the linear model is higher than that of the DRDM, but the plume of the DRDM moves faster than that of the linear model. Behaviors of contaminant transport using the DRDM are consistent with common features of a linear model. For instance, biodegradation effect becomes larger as time goes by The faster the seepage velocity is, the faster the plume of contaminant moves. The plume of the contaminant is distributed evenly over overall domain in the event of high dispersion coefficient.
The boron transport model has been implemented into the CUPID code to simulate the boron transport phenomena of the PWR. The boron concentration conservation was confirmed through a simulation of a conceptual boron transport problem in which water with a constant inlet boron concentration injected into an inlet of the 2-dimensional vertical flow tube. The step wise boron transport problem showed that the numerical diffusion of the boron concentration can be reduced by the second order convection scheme. In order to assess the adaptability of the developed boron transport model to the realistic situation, the ROCOM test was simulated by using the CUPID implemented with the boron transportation.
The centrifuge test result on capped sediment was compared to the advection- dispersion equation proposed for one layered to predict contaminant transport parameters. The fitted contaminant transport parameters for the centrifuge test results were one to three orders of magnitude greater than the estimated parameters from the advection-dispersion equation. This indicates that the centrifuge model over estimated the contaminant transport phenomena. Thus, the centrifuge provides a non-conservative approach to modeling contaminant transport. It should be also noted that the advection-dispersion equation used in this study is a one layered model. Two layered modeling approaches are more appropriate for modeling this data since there are two layers with different partitioning coefficients. Further research is required to model the centrifuge test using two-layered advection-dispersion models.
In laser full penetration welding process, full penetration hole(FPH) is formed as a result of force balance between the vapor pressure and the surface tension of the surrounding molten metal. In this work, a three-dimensional numerical model based on a conserved-mass level-set method is developed to simulate the transport phenomena during laser full penetration welding process, including full penetration keyhole dynamics. Ray trancing model is applied to simulate multi-reflection phenomena in the keyhole wall. The ghost fluid method and continuum method are used to deal with liquid/vapor interface and solid/liquid interface. The effects of processing parameters including laser power and scanning speed on the resultant full penetration hole diameter, laser energy distribution and energy absorption efficiency are studied. The model is validated against experimental results. The diameter of full penetration hole calculated by the simulation model agrees well with the coaxial images captured during laser welding of thin stainless steel plates. Numerical simulation results show that increase of laser power and decrease of welding speed can enlarge the full penetration hole, which decreases laser energy efficiency.
The results of simulation of direct methane fuel cell fed with liquid-state methanol feed are shown. This numerical process is based on mass and current conservation equations. The results showed that over low current density $(<200mA/cm^2)$ IV polarization curve was well-presented compared to experimental result. Methanol fed from anodic side moved into cathodic side through electrolyte membrane and the pressure near cathode electrode increased according to amount of methanol crossover and production of water. Besides change of overpotential on each el electrode were checked by x-axis.
The transport phenomena of arsenic (As) doped amorphous selenium(a-Se:As) thin film for digital X-ray conversion material has been reported. The effect of As addition on the carrier mobility and recombination lifetime in a-Se:As sample has been measured using the moving photo-carrier grating (MPG) technique. An Increase in hole mobility and recombination was observed when 0.3% arsenic, was added into a-Se sample, whereas electron mobility decrease with arsenic addition due to the defect density. The fabricated a-Se:03% As device exhibited the highest X-ray sensitivity.

The effect of a solute concentration difference on the osmotic transport of water through the semi-permeable membrane of a simple cell model is investigated. So far, most studies on osmotic phenomena are described by simple diffusion-type equations ignoring all fluid motion or described by Stokes flow. In our work, as the governing equations, we consider the coupled full Navier-Stokes equations which describe the fluid motion and the full transport equation that takes into account of convection and diffusion effects. A two dimensional finite difference model has been developed to simulate the velocity field, concentration field, and semi-permeable membrane movement. It is shown that the cell swells to regions of lower solute concentration due to the uneven water flux through the semi-permeable membrane. The simulation is applied on a red blood cell geometry and the relevant results are presented.
Hydrodynamic Thermal Capilary Model developed previously has been modified to study the transport phenomena in the Czochralski process. Our analysis is focused on the heat transfer in the system, convection in the melt phase, and the meniscus and interface shape. Four major forces drive melt flow in the crucible, which include thermal buoyancy force in the melt, thermocapillary force along the curved meniscus, crucible rotation and crystal rotation. Individual flow mechanism due to each driving force has been examined to determine its interaction with the meniscus and interface shape. A nominal 4-inch-diameter silicon crystal growth process is chosen as a subject for analysis. Heater temperature profile for constant diameter crystal is also present as a function of crystal height or fraction solidified.
