The transport of radionuclides at oceanic scales can be assessed using a Lagrangian model. In this review an application of such a model to the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans is described. The transport model, which is fed with water currents provided by global ocean circulation models, includes advection by three-dimensional currents, turbulent mixing, radioactive decay and adsorption/release of radionuclides between water and bed sediments. Adsorption/release processes are described by means of a dynamic model based upon kinetic transfer coefficients. A stochastic method is used to solve turbulent mixing, decay and water/sediment interactions. The main results of these oceanic radionuclide transport studies are summarized in this paper. Particularly, the potential leakage of 137Cs from dumped nuclear wastes in the north Atlantic region was studied. Furthermore, hypothetical accidents, similar in magnitude to the Fukushima accident, were simulated for nuclear power plants located around the Indian Ocean coastlines. Finally, the transport of radionuclides resulting from the release of stored water, which was used to cool reactors after the Fukushima accident, was analyzed in the Pacific Ocean.
A 2-dimensional numerical sediment transport model has been developed by using erosion rates observed by SEDFLUME. The model un boundary-fitted coordinate can reduce inaccuracy of sediment model with accurate erosion data. Suspended transport and bed load transport are included in the model together. The model results gave good agreement with particle size distributions in 1-d channel and was more accurate than that of HIDAS of 1-dimensional model. The model applied to an enlarging channel to check model performance in 2-dimensional domain. Bed coarsening reduced erosion and deposition.
Proposed in the paper is an agent based and object-oriented methodology to create a virtual logistics support system model. The proposed virtual logistics support system model consists of three types of objects: the logistics force agent model(static model), the military supplies transport manager model(function model), the military supplies state manager model(dynamic model). A logistic force agent model consists of two agent: main function agent and function agent. To improve the reusability and composability of a logistics force agent model, the function agent is designed to adapt to different logistics force agent configuration. A military supplies transport manager is agent that get information about supply route, make decisions based on decision variables, which are maintained by the military supplies state manager, and transport military supplies. A military supplies state manager is requested military supplies from logistics force agent, provide decision variables such as the capacity, order of priority. For the implementation of the proposed virtual logistics force agent model, this paper employs Discrete Event Systems Specification(DEVS) formalism.
Generally, it is difficult to predict water quality in a tidal river, because tidal flows make the transport phenomena more complicated. The purpose of this study is to clarify long-term mass transport in a tidal river through suggestion of simulation model. A simulation model based on a Lagrangian coordinate system, which has the advantage reducing numerical dispersion, was used to calculate changes in concentration of chlorides. Several field surveys were conducted to verify calculated results. Concludingly, long-term behavior of mas transport in a tidal river can be represented using the model.
A Numerical model is developed in order to predict cross-shore beach profile change. In this model it is assumed that sediment transport is generated by waves(bed load transport suspended load transport) and undertow which is defined as offshore directional steady flow in the surf zone. In addition wave tank experiments which reproduce storm-surge were performed. By comparing resulting profile of calculation with experiments, the applicability of this method is verified.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of riverbed variation due to the sediment protection weir located on the estuary of the main stream of Taehwa river using I-D finite difference model, HEC-6 model, and the followings are the results of estimating sediment transport rate, amount of scour or deposition, and accumulated amount of deposit according to before and after of the sediment protection weir removal with various flow rates in the channel. Ackers-White transport function produced the greatest sediment transport rate while Meyer-Peter showed the smallest sediment transport rate at the most down stream area of the watershed through the sediment transport rate analyses for various flow rates according to the existence or nonexistence of the sediment protection weir. Toffaleti's and Colby transport function were closest to the average value, and the difference among the results of the sediment transport functions showed up to 8~9 times. Duboy's transport function produced the greatest riverbed variation while Toffaleti's showed the smallest variation through the riverbed variation analyses according to the existence or nonexistence of the sediment protection weir. Yang's was closest to the average value, and the difference among the results of the riverbed variation analyses ranged from 1.4 times to 11 times. It is thought that a sediment transport function must be selected very carefully with respect to the criteria of sediment yield estimation because the analysis results of the sediment transport rate and riverbed variation according to flow rates showed significant differences among the sediment transport functions, and the differences of sediment transport rate and riverbed variation according to the various sediment transport functions decreased as the flow rate increased.
A method for identifying the released region and time of Asian dust using the long-range inverse transport model that traces the wind field in the backward direction from positions where Asian dust was observed is described. Initial conditions for the inverse transport simulation were obtained from the time variation of the density distribution of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the air measured at various places in Japan. Based on a concentration of trajectories of the air mass computed by the inverse transport model, the source region of Asian dust clouds observed at meteorological stations in Japan on March 17 to 18, 2002 was estimated. As a result, it was found that dust particles were released at about 6h on March 15 in the neighborhood of Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region.

The calculation method using the numerical model developed is currently one of the mose required method to predict sediment transport and bed changes in the rivers. Specially, it is real condition that is applying as it is a single sediment transport equation and sediment transport mode mostly without verification process with field data. The sensitivity analysis and calibration process considering the different sediment transport equations and sediment transport modes should be performed for the accurate bed change prediction of the specified study reach using the a model. Through its process, the optimum sediment transport equation and mode for the study reach should be defined. In this study, bed changes for the actual river are computed using the CCHE2D model allowed to select various sediment transport equations and modes. The bed change sensitivity analysis with different ranges of river flow discharge through its process, the optimum sediment transport equation and mode for the study reach should be defined. The bed change simulation with the actual hydraulic condition and the modeling results are compared with the field survey results.
The purpose of this study is to predict appropriate leachate rates and leachate transport velocity through weathered zone and basement rock on the transient condition at Nanji waste landfill. The leachate transport in the Nanji waste landfill is analyzed using MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) model which simulates three dimension groundwater flow and MT3D(A Modular Three Dimentional Transport Model) model which describes three dimensional transport for advection, dispersion and chemical reaction of dissolved constituents in groundwater system on the transient condition. Leachate production rates are estimated by HELP(Hydraulical Evaluation of Landfill Performance) model and used weather records for recent 10 years. Leachate transport is predicted by a change of leachate level to after/before established HDPE, established slurry wall and wells.
An analysis model on debris transport in the containment floor of pressurized water reactors is developed in which the flow field is calculated by Eulerian conservation equations of mass and momentum and the debris particles are traced by Lagrange equations of motion using the pre-determined flow field data. For the flow field calculation, two-dimensional Shallow Water Equations derived from Navier Stokes equations are solved using the Finite Volume Method, and the Harten-Lax-van Leer scheme is used for accuracy to capture the dry-to-wet interface. For the debris tracing, a simplified two-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking model including drag force is developed. Advanced schemes to find the positions of particles over the containment floor and to determine the position of particles reflected from the solid wall are implemented. The present model is applied to calculate the transport fraction to the Hold-up Volume Tank in Advanced Power Reactors 1400. By the present model, the debris transport fraction is predicted, and the effect of particle density and particle size on transport is investigated.
