Translucent plastics are commonly used in packaging of mechanical and/or electrical components. Although Rapid Prototyping(RP) provides prototypes of various materials, translucent RP parts are not readily available from most RP processes. ABSi is one of the ABS materials available for Stratasys' FDM process, and the material had potential to be translucent. In this paper, two post-processing techniques were applied in order to increase optical transmissivity of the parts made of FDM's ABSi. First, elevated temperature condition was applied resulting in increased transmissivity while dimensional shrinkage was observed. Second, resin infiltration and surface sanding provided up tp 16 % transmissivity without shrinkage. These post-processes can be selectively applied to increase transmissivity of ABSi parts. Thus, translucent FDM part can be fabricated from regular FDM process followed by the post-processes developed in this study.

PURPOSE. This study evaluated the depth of cure of resin composite cured by light through a translucent fiber post. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The opaque plastic tubes in various lengths of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 mm. were filled with resin composite in which two different translucent fiber posts were inserted into the center and photo-polymerized for 40 seconds. The degree of conversion of the cured composite at bottom surface were examined using Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection spectrometer (FTIR/ATR) at 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mm apart from the post surface. RESULTS. The degree of conversion of the 0.1 mm, 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm apart from the post surface was highest at the 2 mm level and continuously decreased when the distance from the light source was increased and drastically decreased when the depth from the top of the post was greater than 4-6 mm. For each level, the highest degree of conversion was at 0.1 mm from the post surface and decreased continuously when the distance apart from the post surface was increased. CONCLUSION. The quantity of light transmission depends on the type of post and the light transmission capability of the post, especially after 4-6 mm depth and the area further apart from the post surface, are insufficient for clinical light activation of resin composite.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and substitute possibility of a newly developed flowable composite resins as a luting cement for translucent fiber post. Material & Method: Two kinds of 12 mm translucent fiber Post (D.T. Light-Post (Bisco, USA) and FRC Postec (Ivoclar vivadent, Liechtenstein) was inserted into the teflon mold (7 mm diameter, 9 mm long) and Filtek-Flow (3M ESPE. USA), a light activated flowable composite resin, was polymerized for 60 seconds through the post. Also, the post was cut from the tip to 9 mm, 6 mm, 3 mm, and Filtek-Flow was light cured according to each length. For comparison, 60 seconds light-cured and 24 hours self-cured two dual cured resin cement (Duo-cement (Bisco, USA) and 2 Panavia-F (Kuraray, Japan)) samples were prepared as control group. Also cavities (1 mm in width, 1 mm in depth and 12 mm in length) were prepared using acrylic plate and aluminum bar, and flowable composite resin was flied and light cured by the diffused light from the fiber post's side wall. The degree of polymerization was measured according to the distance from curing light using Vickers' hardness test. Result: Within the limitation of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Vickers' hardness of light cured dual cured resin cement and flowable composite resin decreased from Panavia-F, Filtek-Flow and Duo-cement accordingly (p<0.05). In the dual curing resin cement, light curing performed group showed higher surface hardness value than self cured only group (p<0.05). 2. Surface hardness ratio (light cured through fiber post /directly light cured) of D.T. Light-Post using Filtek-Flow showed about 70% in the 6 mm deep and about 50% in the 12 mm deep FRC Postec showed only 40% of surface hardness ratio. 3. Surface hardness ratio by diffused light from the post's side wall showed about 50% at 6 mm and 9 mm deep, and about 40% at 12 mm deep in D.T. Light-Post. However, FRC Postec showed about 40% at 6 mm deep, and almost no polymerization in 9 mm and 12 mm deep.
PURPOSE. This study aimed to investigate the Vickers Hardness Number (VHN) of light- and dual cured resin cements cured through monolithic zirconia specimens (VITA YZ) of various translucencies: translucent (T); high translucent (HT); super translucent (ST); and extra translucent (XT) at 0, 24, and 48 h after curing. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four zirconia specimens from each translucency were prepared. Two light-cured resin cements (Variolink N LC; VL and RelyX Veneer; RL) and two dual-cured resin cements (Variolink N DC; VD and RelyX U200; RD) were used. The cement was mixed and loaded in a mold and cured for 20 s through the zirconia specimen. The upper surface of cements was tested for VHN using a microhardness tester at 0, 24, and 48 h after curing. The VHN were analyzed using two-way repeated, Brown-Forsythe ANOVA with Games Howell post-hoc analysis and independent t-tests (P < .05). RESULTS. All cements showed significantly higher VHN from 0 h to 24 h (P < .001). At 48 h, the VHN of light-cured cements were significantly lower when cured under the T groups than under XT groups (P = .001 in VL, P = .014 in RL). At each post curing time of each translucency, VD showed higher VHN than VL (P < .05), and RD also showed higher VHN than RL (P < .05). CONCLUSION. The translucency of zirconia has an effect on the VHN for light-cured resin cements, but has no effect on dual-cured resin cements. Dual-cured resin cement exhibited higher VHN than the light-cured resin cement from the same manufacturer. All resin cements showed significantly higher VHN from 0 h to 24 h.
The post core system has been used for reconstructon of severely damaged crown by caries or trauma. But problems such as crown exfoliation, post core fracture and root fracture have been reported. Ideal mechanical properies of the post require high fracture strength, high elastic limit and high resistance against fatigue and corrosion Modulus of elasticity of the post should be similar with that of dentine. Low hardness is also required for the convenience of post removal in failure. Furthermore, the post itself must be translucent for the esthetical purpose. Several types of the post have been developed to satisfy the criteria above mentioned. The purpose of this study was to find out the mechanical properties of quartz fiber post by comparing with those of gold post and zirconia post. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Maximal fracture strength and stiffness of quartz fiber post were similar with those of gold post and zirconia post. 2. Young's modulus and hardness of quartz fiber post were lower than those of gold post and zirconia post. Mechanical property of quartz fiber post against post fracture was similar with that of gold post and zirconia post. Mechanical property of quartz fiber post against root fracture was higher than that of gold post and zirconia post. Quartz fiber post could be removed easily due to low hardness.
PURPOSE. Translucency and colour stability are two most important aspects for an aesthetic dental restoration. Glass ceramic restorations are popular amongst clinicians because of their superior aesthetic properties. In the last decade, zirconia has generated tremendous interest due to its favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, zirconia lacks the translucency that lithium disilicate materials possess and therefore has limitations in its use, especially in esthetically demanding situations. There has been a great thrust in research towards developing translucent zirconia materials for dental restorations. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the transmittance of a translucent variant of zirconia to lithium disilicate. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commercially available zirconia materials (conventional and high translucency) and 2 lithium disilicate materials (conventional and high translucency) with standardized dimensions were fabricated. Transmittance values were measured for all samples followed by a microstructural analysis using a finite element scanning electron microscope. One way analysis of variance combined with a Tukey-post hoc test was used to analyze the data obtained (P=.05). RESULTS. High translucency lithium disilicate showed highest transmittance of all materials studied, followed by conventional lithium disilicate, high translucency zirconia and conventional zirconia. The difference between all groups of materials was statistically significant. The transmittance of the different materials correlated to their microstructure analysis. CONCLUSION. Despite manufacturers' efforts to make zirconia significantly more translucent, the transmittance values of these materials still do not match conventional lithium disilicate. More research is required on zirconia towards making the material more translucent for its potential use as esthetic monolithic restoration.
Purpose: This study provided the basic data for selecting the zirconia blocks by comparing the mechanical properties of the all ceramic crown between the domestic, import, translucent and shade blocks that were used in clinically. Methods: Currently, the most commercial block of five types(one import and two domestic block which is the translucent and shade) were used. It were elucidated by means of three point bending test, hardness test, FE-SEM observations and EDX analysis. The results were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and Scheffe post hoc test for significant findings. Results: For flexural strength, LT specimen was the highest as 733.1 MPa, followed by JT specimen(712.0 MPa), ZT specimen(646.0 MPa), LS specimen(553.1 MPa), JS specimen(429.0 MPa). One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for flexural strength(p<0.05). For hardness, ZT specimen was the highest as 1556.5 Hv, followed by JT specimen(1540.3 Hv), LT specimen(1512.3 Hv), JS specimen(1472.0 Hv), LS specimen(1353.3 Hv). One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for hardness(p<0.05). Conclusion: Domestic block was higher than import block for flexural strength, and translucent block was higher than shade block for flexural strength. However, all blocks showed clinically acceptable range. There was no significant difference in hardness between domestic and import blocks. And significant difference was observed in translucent and shade blocks.
The age and growth of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus caught by large purse seine fishery were studied during August 2004 and May 2005. Otoliths of 472 fish were observed under reflected light, and translucent zones made on the post-rostrum axis were regarded as annual marks. Monthly changes in the marginal index indicated that the translucent zone was formed once a year, mainly in March-April, which was coincident with the peak spawning time of jack mackerel. The estimated ages were 0-6 years, corresponding to a fork length (FL) range of 13 to 38 cm. Most obtained individuals were 2-year-old fish, followed by 1-year-old fish. The mean fork length at age from otolith reading (sex combined) was applied to the von Bertalanffy equation and growth parameters were estimated: L∞ = 38.29 cm FL, k = 0.31 years−1, t0 = −0.81 years.
In this paper the advantage of web technology applied to Rapid Prototyping is discussed. Two fabrication processes are chosen to be web-enabled. One, a post-process of FDM is developed to provide translucent plastic parts made of medical grade ABS material. The other, a system to fabricate laser machined Light Guide Panel is developed. In order to show the timesaving characteristics of the web-based tools, two websites are implemented (http://nano.gsnu.ac.kr/fdm & http://nano.gsnu.ac.kr/laser). The 3-tier architecture is applied for the Internet communication between designers and manufacturing sites, The integrated design tools and physical manufacturing processes enable designers to submit a new design and to receive the fabricated parts in an expedited manner. Example parts are fabricated using the web-based system to prove the concept of the web-based design and Rapid Prototyping.
