  • The first molar is important for mastication and also it plays roles to formation of vertical occlusion and growth of jaw bone after mixed dentition. Impaction of mandibular first molar can result in a short lower facial height, formation of a follicular cyst, pericoronal inflammation, resorption of the roots of neighboring teeth and malocclusion. The options of treatment plans are as follows; observation, surgical exposure, orthodontic traction, surgical relocation and extraction. Surgical exposure could be considered as a basic treatment plan. For surgical exposure it is important to maintain patent channel between the crown and the normal eruptive path into the oral cavity, many techniques including cementation of a celluloid crown, packing with zinc oxide-eugenol surgical pack are used. In these cases, we could observe spontaneous eruption of mandibular first molar using surgical exposure with or without removal of odontoma. Also we could obtain the main patency effectively and conveniently by using surgical pack and translucent retainer.

  • PURPOSE. This study was to evaluate the marginal fit of two CAD-CAM anatomic contour zirconia crown systems compared to lithium disilicate glass-ceramic crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Shoulder and deep chamfer margin were formed on each acrylic resin tooth model of a maxillary first premolar. Two CAD-CAM systems (Prettau$^{(R)}$Zirconia and ZENOSTAR$^{(R)}$ZR translucent) and lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max$^{(R)}$press) crowns were made (n=16). Each crown was bonded to stone dies with resin cement (Rely X Unicem). Marginal gap and absolute marginal discrepancy of crowns were measured using a light microscope equipped with a digital camera (Leica DFC295) magnified by a factor of 100. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey's HSD test were conducted to analyze the significance of crown marginal fit regarding the finish line configuration and the fabrication system. RESULTS. The mean marginal gap of lithium disilicate glass ceramic crowns (IPS e.max$^{(R)}$press) was significantly lower than that of the CAD-CAM anatomic contour zirconia crown system (Prettau$^{(R)}$Zirconia) (P<.05). Both fabrication systems and finish line configurations significantly influenced the absolute marginal discrepancy (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The lithium disilicate glass ceramic crown (IPS e.max$^{(R)}$press) had significantly smaller marginal gap than the CAD-CAM anatomic contour zirconia crown system (Prettau$^{(R)}$Zirconia). In terms of absolute marginal discrepancy, the CAD-CAM anatomic contour zirconia crown system (ZENOSTAR$^{(R)}$ZR translucent) had under-extended margin, whereas the CAD-CAM anatomic contour zirconia crown system (Prettau$^{(R)}$Zirconia) and lithium disilicate glass ceramic crowns (IPS e.max$^{(R)}$press) had overextended margins.

  • Esthetic availabilities used as an esthetic restorative maternals can be determined by the optical coincidence among materials, enamel and dentin. Enamel is highly translucent. That's why esthetic materials need to correspond the close translucency of enamel. But the translucent materials are affected by the background color. So it should be predicted that the color of estorative materials depend on the any thickness and the spectral reflectance of the background on which they are placed. The object of this investigation, under above hypothesis, was to determine and analyze how they affect the final color according to the thickness, translucency and background color (white, black and dentin) fill three commercial light cured composite resins(Charisma, Spectrum TPH and Z100). And correlation was analyzed to find out the possibility of the prediction when using the certain background color and thickness of materials. Followings are the result 1. The I shade of CHA showed the lowest contrast ratio($Co_7$) while the B3 shade of Z100 showed the highest contrast ratio(p<0.05). 2. The value of $L^*$ and $b^*$ on the white and dentin background is increased with decreasing thickness. And there are significant relationships between increasing thickness and each value(R>0.085). But there is a little change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ value on the black background regardless of the thickness(p>0.05). 3. For the $a^*$ value, there was little difference in values as a function of thickness and changed irregularly regardless of thickness in all background. 4. The pattern of increasing value of $L^*$ and $b^*$ with decreasing thickness was similar to the group of white and dentin background. In both dentin one showed lesser change of value. 5. The values of $L^*a^*b^*$ measured on the different background with same thickness showed the recognizable color difference(${\Delta}E^*$>2) when the thickness was below 2.6mm. 6. Contrast ratio was increased with increasing thickness with significant relationship (R>0.9). 7. Spectral reflectance of composite resins that calculated from Kubelka-Munk equation was showed little difference compared with observed value w1th decreasing thickness.

  • Current trends in restorative dentistry focus on improving the esthetics and keeping the sound dental tissues as long as possible. The aims of this case report were to describe the successful outcome of cubic-phase zirconia laminate veneers for a patient with isolated microdontia by using a digital workflow, and to describe their clinical implications. A 15-year-old female who had isolated microdontia in combination with spacing visited Ajou University Dental Hospital for esthetic treatment. In this case, 6 maxillary anterior teeth were restored with cubic-phase zirconia laminate veneers without tooth structure removal by using a digital impression, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) procedures. At 6-month follow-up, no distinct mechanical and biological complications were detected and the prostheses exhibited satisfactory esthetics and functions. Due to its favorable tissue responses and enhanced translucency, cubic-phase zirconia can be a suitable strategy for a noninvasive esthetic approach.

  • Clinical applications of translucent zirconia as well as traditional zirconia (3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, 3Y-TZP) are increasing. For this reason, studies on factors affecting the optical properties of dental zirconia have been continuously reported. The optical effect of dental zirconia may vary depending on the yttria content, the thickness of the prosthesis, the sintering process, polishing, glazing and cementation in laboratory and clinical procedures. Increasing the yttria concentration can reduce the masking effect. Translucency decreases as the thickness of the restoration increases, but the required thickness may vary depending on the properties of the zirconia block. The high-speed sintering method can shorten the manufacturing time, but in some cases, the translucency of the prosthesis may decrease. In addition, the optical properties can be affected by the surface roughness of zirconia and the polishing process. The use of an appropriate colored cement can help with the masking effect of zirconia and can be useful for color matching for more esthetic results.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the masking ability of three types of high translucent zirconia according to the various thicknesses and backgrounds. Materials and Methods: Using three types of high-translucency zirconia (Ceramill zolid fx white, Ceramill zolid ht+ white, Ceramill zolid ht+ preshade A2), 10 cylindrical specimens were fabricated in 10mm diameter and each with four thicknesses (0.6 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm), respectively by CAD/CAM method. The background was 10 mm in diameter and 10 mm in thickness. A1, A2, A3 flowable resin backgrounds, blue-colored core resin background, and Ni-Cr alloy background were prepared, and black, white backgrounds provided by the spectrophotometer manufacturer (x-rite, Koblach, Austria) were used. zirconia specimens and the background specimen were stacked to measure L, a*, b* with Spectrophotometer (Color i5, x-rite, Koblach, Austria) and the ΔE value with the other background is calculated. The Calculated mean ΔE values were compared based on perceptibility threshold 1.0 and acceptability threshold 3.7. Nonparametric tests such as Kruskal-Wallis test were performed to verify statistical significance (α = 0.05). Results: There was a significant difference in the mean ΔE value according to the zirconia type, background and thickness change (P = 0.000). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the pre-colored high-translucent zirconia can obtain the desired zirconia shade when it is restored on teeth, composite resins, and abutments except for the blue resin core.

  • The purpose of this research is to find applicable design characteristics and methods of communal spaces in vertical urban multi-family housing. With this goal, several overseas' multi-family housing projects are selected and their communal spaces are identified. The design characteristics of the communal spaces are analyzed with a special focus on the territories such as an individual unit boundary, building interior and exterior boundary. In terms of the framework for analysis, territoriality, openness, and unique characteristics are reviewed. As a result, the communal spaces are created using various spatial composition methods such as addition, subtraction, connection, extension, accumulation, and isolation. The communal space programs are integrated in plans and sections throughout the buildings. Visual openness and connection with surrounding urban environments are articulated by void spaces, transparent and translucent building materials, green spaces, and applications of graphical images. Communal identities and aesthetics are emphasized by unique building forms and space arrangements. The uses of finish materials, colors, objects, and images add strong characters to the communal spaces. For a further research, it is necessary to combine a design method study with residents' behaviors and community interactions.

  • In computer graphics, realistic skin rendering has been regarded as difficult tasks and remains as an important research subject. Translucent materials like skin have some complicated optical properties including subsurface scattering. In this paper, we proposes a skin shader based on subsurface scattering to render realistic skin and it has been implemented as a plug-in for Maya, 3D Package. The rendered image using this proposed skin shader appears more realistic than the rendered image using classical shading techniques. Furthermore, we could model sebum, epidermis, dermis using specular reflection, multiple scattering, single scattering respectively.
