  • Objectives: The low benefit coverage rate of South Korea's health security system has been continually pointed out. A low benefit coverage rate inevitably causes catastrophic health expenditure, which can be the cause of the transition to poverty and the persistence of poverty. This study was conducted to ascertain the effect of catastrophic health expenditure on the transition to poverty and the persistence of poverty in South Korea. Methods: To determine the degree of social mobility, this study was conducted among the 6311 households that participated in the South Korea Welfare Panel Study in both 2006 and 2008. The effect of catastrophic health expenditure on the transition to poverty and the persistence of poverty in South Korea was assessed via multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: The poverty rate in South Korea was 21.6% in 2006 and 20.0% in 2008. 25.1 - 7.3% of the households are facing catastrophic health expenditure. Catastrophic health expenditure was found to affect the transition to poverty even after adjusting for the characteristics of the household and the head of the household, at the threshold of 28% or above. Conclusions: 25.1% of the households in this study were found to be currently facing catastrophic health expenditure, and it was determined that catastrophic health expenditure is a cause of transition to poverty. This result shows that South Korea's health security system is not an effective social safety net. As such, to prevent catastrophic health expenditure and transition to poverty, the benefit coverage of South Korea's health security system needs to the strengthened.

  • A significant number of tropical cyclones move into the midlatitudes and go through transformation procedure into extratropical cyclones. This process is generally referred to as extratropical transition of the tropical cyclone. In this study, MIDULLE(0407) case is selected. A thorough analysis is made using the GDAPS analysis data and MTM (Moving-nest Typhoon Model) model output. It is found that during the extratropical transition an important dynamics in the environmetal flow field occurs in which colder, drier (warm, moist) air penetrates in the western (eastern) quadrant of MINDULLE's outer circulation, which in turn initiates an asymmetry in the distribution of wind and temperature of the tropical cyclone. Simulated MTM result also reveals similar properties as in GDAPS analysis data. MTM result shows the gradual transition to the asymmetric distribution of wind and thickness as the extratropical transition proceeds. It is also found that the warm core disappears during the extratropical transition stage. Also, vortex tube is shown tilting towards the west during the transition. And the precipitation expands poleward of the center and the maximum precipitation appears to the left of MINDULLE which is consistent to the observations.

  • A study of counter-current two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channels has been performed. Two-phase flow regimes were experimentally studied in 760 mm long and 100 mm wide test sections with 2.0 and 3.0mm gaps. The resulting data have been compared to previous transition models. For the transition from bubbly to slug flow the superficial velocity of gas increased as the gap width increased. The comparison of experimental data to the transition model developed by Taitel and Barnea showed relatively good agreement for the bubbly-to-slug transition in the case of 2mm gap width. For the criteria of Mishima and Ishii to be applicable to the slug-to-churn transition the distribution parameter should be well defined for narrow channels. Even though the gap width of narrow channels increased the superficial gas velocity did not change for the transition form chum to annular flow regime. For the chum-to-annular transition the model of Taitel and Barnea showed discrepancies with experimental data, especially in the channel with larger gap.

  • This study explores the tendency of corporations and organizations to continue with their current processes despite having incentives for better Information Technology (IT) innovation or transition. In this context, the study argues that organizations may struggle with 'outsourcing inertia,' a well-known concept referring to an organization's deficient adaptability to environmental changes, particularly defined here as the organization's slow adaptation to changes in outsourcing levels. To verify this, the study analyzes how key variables identified from existing IT Outsourcing (ITO) decision-making research and recent studies on cloud computing transitions actually affect a firm's transition intentions. In the process, this study investigates the moderating effect of a firm's outsourcing inertia, utilizing the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework and the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) model based on migration theory to propose a research model. The study aims to contribute to finding strategic approaches necessary for facilitating IT innovation and transition by understanding the impact of outsourcing inertia on the decision-making process related to IT outsourcing. It is important to note that the majority of domestic conglomerates own IT subsidiaries, which significantly influence the process of transitioning to cloud computing. Nevertheless, research on the impact of IT subsidiaries on cloud computing transition is relatively scarce. Based on this background, this study proposes that IT subsidiaries within domestic conglomerates can act as a significant mooring factor of organizational inertia in the decision-making process for adopting cloud computing. Through this, the study seeks to provide strategic insights for overcoming organizational inertia faced by IT subsidiaries during the cloud computing transition process.

  • Configuration of the inlet transition square duct (hereinafter referred to as "transition duct") for heat recovery steam generator (hereinafter referred to as "HRSG") in combined cycle power plant is limited by the construction type of HRSG and plant site condition. The main purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a variation in turbulent flow pattern by roof slop angle change of transition duct for horizontal HRSG, which is influencing heat flux in heat transfer structure to the finned tube bank. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is applied to predict turbulent flow pattern and comparisons are made to 1/12th scale cold model test data for verification. Re-normalization group theory (RNG) based k-$\epsilon$ turbulent model, which improves the accuracy for rapidly strained flow and swirling flow in comparison with standard k-$\epsilon$ model, is used for the results cited in this study. To reduce the amount of computer resources required for modeling the finned tube bank, a porous media model is used.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine parenting education participation of Korean mothers in the transition to parenthood and its related variables. Method: A study sample was composed of 870 mothers whose first child was younger than one-year old from the Panel Study on Korean Children in 2008(mean age=30.1, SD = 3.69). The descriptive statistics of parenting education participation were presented. In addition, negative binomial and logistic regression models were used in Stata13 in order to examine the variables related to parenting education participation of mothers in the transition to parenthood. Results: Approximately 82% of the mothers reported that they had participated in at least one parenting education program. Further, mother's educational level, monthly household income, mother's working experience, and community type generally predicted parenting education participation of mothers. However, the effects of these variables varied by the subjects and the providing institutions. Conclusion: This study provides the overall picture of parenting education participation of Korean mothers in the transition to parenthood and its related variables. The findings can be utilized to plan more effective parenting education programs for new parents.

  • This study examined whether sequential transition patterns of social play differed by children's social competence. The social competence of sixty 5-year-old children was rated by their teachers using the Social Competence Scale(NICHD Early Child Research Network, 1996). Children's social play was observed during free play and coded by criteria developed by Robinson et al(2003). Results showed differences in children's social play behaviors by social competence and differences in the transition patterns of children's social play level by social competence. Children with higher social competence showed a transition pattern moving toward cooperative-social interaction, whereas children with lower social competence showed a transition pattern moving backward to solitary or onlooker behavior.

  • This study investigates formant transition shapes of Korean front vowels produced by native speakers of Seoul Korean. Sixteen speakers (eight male and eight female speakers) produced [pVt] syllables where the vowels were [i, e, ɛ]. F1, F2, and F3 transition shapes were estimated by presenting formant values at 11 points by dividing the vowel duration into 10 different time intervals. The results indicated that the male and female speakers overall demonstrated similar formant transition shapes and measurement points arriving at the maximum and minimum formant values for the three front vowels. As for the vowels [e] and [ɛ], both male and female speakers showed similar formant values across the 11 measurement points and similar measurement points arriving at the maximum and minimum values, indicating that the two Korean vowels have been merged not only in the steady-state formant values, but also in the dynamic transition shapes.

  • Bulk metallic glasses (BMG) have been greatly improved by the advance of synthesis process during last three decades. It was also found that the Glass Forming Ability (GFA) strongly depends on the glass transition temperature. When the temperature approaches to a critical value, the crystals nucleation from the supercooled liquid can be suppressed so that bulk glass formation possible. Egami and others found that the local glass transition temperature depends on the volumetric strain of each atom and suggested the critical transition temperature. In this paper, we explore the strain dependency of local glass transition temperature using the atomic strain defined by the deformation tensor for the Voronoi polyhedra.
