Objectives : Liver is one of the largest organs in the human, and has a function of detoxification and energy sensing to prevent severe disease. Paeoniae radix has been used to treat a variety of liver diseases such as hepatitis and chronic hepatic failure. Although P. radix has been used as an medicinal herb for a long time, the effects of P. radix on severe oxidative stress and its action mechanism on the liver was not clearly verified. Methods : This study investigated the protective effects of P. radix extract (PRE), and the underlying mechanism of its action in the liver. tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) and carbon tetrachlroride (CCl4) were used to induce oxidative stress in the HepG2 hepatocyte cell line and Sprague-Dawley rats, respectively. Results : t-BHP significantly induced cell death and ROS production in HepG2 cell, as indicated by MTT and FACS analysis. However, pretreatment of PRE inhibited a decrease in cell viability and H2O2 production in the HepG2 cells. PRE also blocked the ability of t-BHP to damage in mitochondrial membrane transition. More importantly, PRE induced Nrf2 activation and antioxidant Phase II enzyme, which may have a role in the effects of PRE. In mice, PRE inhibited the liver damage induced by CCl4.Conclusions : PRE inhibited oxidative stress and hepatic damages as mediated with Nrf2 activation. This study unveil, in part, the effect and mechanism of old medicinal herb, P. radix.

Alterations in the cellular genome affecting the expression or function of genes controlling cell growth and differentiation are considered to be the main cause of cancer. Over 30 oncogenes can be activated by insertional mutagenesis, single point mutations, chromosomal translocations and gene amplification. The ras oncogenes have been detected in $15{\sim}20%$ of human tumors that include some of the most common forms of human neoplasia and are known to acquire their transforming properties by single point mutations in two domains of their coding sequences, most commonly in codons 12 and 61. The ras gene family consists of three functional genes, N-ras, K-ras and H-ras which encode highly similar proteins of 188 or 189 amino acid residues generically known as P21. ras proteins have been shown to bind GTP and GTP, and possess intrinsic GTPase activity. Experimental study was performed to observe the mutational change of the ras gene family and apply the results to the clinical activity. 36 Golden Syrian Hamster each weighing $60{\sim}80g$ were used and painted with 0.5% DMBA by 3 times weekly on the right buccal cheek(experimental side) for 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 weeks. Left buccal cheek (control side) was treated with mineral oil as the same manner of the right side. The hamsters were sacrificed on the 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 & 16 weeks. Normal and tumor tissues from paraffin block were completely dissected by microdissection and DNA from both tissue were isolated by proteinase K/phenol/chloroform extraction. Segments of the K-ras and H-ras gene were amplified by PCR using the oligonucleotide primers corresponding to the homologous region (codon 12 and 61) of the hamster gene, and then confirmational change of ras genes was observed by SSCP and autosequencing analysis. The results were as follows : 1. Malignant lesion could be found in the experimental side from the experimental six weeks. 2. One hamster among six showed point mutation of the H-ras codon 12($G{\rightarrow}A$ transition) at the experimental 10 and 14 weeks. 3. One of six at 6 weeks, two of six at 8 weeks and one of six at 12 weeks revealed the confirmational change of the H-ras codon 61($A{\rightarrow}T$ transversion). 4. The incidence of point mutation of H-ras codon 12 and 61 were 5.5%(2 of 36) and 11%(4 of 36) respectively. 5. Point mutation of the K-ras could not be seen during the whole experimental period. Form the above results, these findings strongly support the concept that H-ras oncogenes may have the influence of the DMBA induced carcinoma of hamster buccal pouch.

Tungsten nitride($WN_x$) films were deposited by PECVD method on silicon nitride($WSi_3N_4$) substrate. The characteristics of $WN_x$ film were investigated with changing various processing parameters ; substrate temperature, gas flow rate, rf power, and different nitrogen sources. The nitrogen composition in $WN_x$ film varied from 0 to 45% according to the $NH_3$ and $N_2$ flow rate. The highest deposition rate of 160 nm/min was obtained for the $NH_3$ gas and relatively low deposition rate of $WN_x$ films were formed by $N_2$ gas. $WN_x$ films deposited on $WSi_3N_4$ substrate had higher deposition rate than that of TiN and Si substrates. The purity of $WN_x$ film were analyzed by AES and higher purity $WN_x$ films were deposited using $NH_3$ gas. The XRD analysis indicates a phase transition from polycrystalline tungsten(W) to amorphous tungsten nitride($WN_x$), showing improved etching profile of $WN_x$ films Thick $WN_x$ films were deposited on various substrates such as Tin, NiCr and Al and maximum thickness of $1.6 {\mu}m$ was obtained on the Al adhesion layer.
This paper tries to examine differences between geography classes taught by majored and non-majored teacher and to find problems in the latter case, tv observing four middle school geography classes in Seoul, from April to May 2003. The observation was fecund on (1) organization of a class (2) dialogue between teacher and students (3) strategy of explanation. In addition, the author conducted personal interviews with social studies teachers in the schools where the observations were made. The analyses of the observed classes were made by micro-ethnographic research method. Major findings of the observation and analysis are as follows. First, the transition from one topic to another topic was not smooth in the case of non-majored teacher class. Second, the questions that the non-majored teacher posed in the classroom played less significant role in keeping up the class in an organized fashion than those that the majored teacher posed. Third, the non-majored teacher focused on the concepts, terms and contents appeared in the textbook and simply tried to explain them, whereas the majored teacher demonstrated teaching methods such as comparing and contrasting cases to provide students with a more dynamic and comprehensive understanding on the topic they teamed. Fourth, the non-majored teacher used maps less frequently and less actively than the majored teacher. In addition, although the non-majored teachers are well aware of their problems in the class as a non-majored teacher, they think that the problems are inevitable in a given curriculum structure of social studies in Korea.

The effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the formation of $N^{\varepsilon}$-(carboxymethly)lysine (CML). one of the endproducts in the Maillard reaction of protein (or glycation), was investigated. Glyoxal, a main precursor of CML formation, was produced from both glucose and fructose during their autoxidation. The transition metal ion showed to involve in the formation of glyoxal by the metal catalyzed oxidation, suggesting that ROS accelerated the reducing sugar autoxidation. The stimulative effect of ROS on the autoxidation was more prominent in glucose than in fructose. Polyunsaturated acids (PUFAs) were shown to form glyoxal by peroxidation in proportion to the degree of unsaturation, but ROS did not affect on PUFA peroxidation. Ascorbic acid also lysine (CMHL) in the model system using hippuryl lysine and glucose had a significant effect on ROS, whereas it had no effect on ROS using glyoxal as a reactant. Almost the same trend was obtained by the analysis of antigen coated indirect noncompetitive ELISA using monoclonal antibody (6D12). These data indicated that ROS affected glucose autoxidation as well as mediated both CML and glyoxal formation, but did not affect the reactive compounds such as fructose, PUFAs and ascorbic acid.

The fundamental conditions for growing $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ crystal, new nonlinear optical material, were investigated. Stoichiometirc mixture of $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ composition resulted in the crystal of the same composition in the process of heating at the temperature above $600^{\circ}C$. No phase transition was observed in the $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ crystal in the temperature range of $600^{\circ}C~800^{\circ}C$, and $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ crystal melted congruently at $850^{\circ}C$. When the melt of this composition was cooled at rates of $1~150^{\circ}C/hr$, glass state ingot was formed regardless of cooling rates. However, $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ crystals were formed directly from the melt at any cooling rate in the presence of $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ seed crystal in the melt. Transparent $CsLiB_{6}O_{10}$ single crystal was grown from the melt using the seed crystal at the growing rate of 0.06 mm/hr in the furnace having the temperature gradient of $100^{\circ}C/cm$. Analysis of the single crystal showed that the crystal belonged to the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal space group 142d and unit cell dimensions were $a=10.467(1)\;{\AA},\;c=8.972(1)\;{\AA}\;and\;V=983.0(2)\;{\AA}^3$. Optical absorption edge of the crystal was observed at 180mm and the crystal showed a good optical transparency (70% transmittance, sample thickness 0.5 mm) in the wide wavelength range above 300 nm.
This article focuses on geo-institutional differentiation and a multi-scalar analysis of emerging capitalist development in Laos. It discusses the impact of the Greater Mekong Subregion on new institutional economic and economic geographical arrangements. It demonstrates the usefulness of the varieties of Asian capitalism approach. The rubber industry was chosen to unravel emerging but various sub-national institutional arrangements linked to higher scale levels. Rubber is a growing agribusiness industry throughout the country, led by the insatiable demand from China. Overall, this study shows that the capitalist development of the rubber industry features much geo-institutional differentiation, due to the different strategies of Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese investors. Since Laos is still in transition from a state-led economy to something else, it is impossible at this to identify the exact number capitalisms. Yet, the evidence on rubber clearly lays bare the presence of multiple institutional arrangements. Without more inclusiveness, however, the implications for regional development are worrying. Exclusive arrangements will most likely lead to more uneven regional development and higher regional inequality. To refine theories on sub-national varieties of capitalism in developing countries it is instructive to consider more explicitly the notion of regional personal capitalisms and the complex interplay between national and regional states and relationships between capital accumulation and livelihood analyses.

In this paper, we describe a multiprocessor system using the HiPi bus with pended protocol and multiple cache memories, and evalute the performance of the multiprocessor system in terms of processor utilization for various cache coherence protocols. The HiPi bus is delveloped as the shared bus of TICOM II which is a main computer system to establish a nation-wide computing network in ETRI. The HiPi bus has high data transfer rate, but it doesn't allow cache-to-cache transfer. In order to evaluate the effect of cache-to-cache transfer upon the performance of system and to choose a best-performed protocol for HiPi bus, we simulate as follows: First, we analyze the performance of multiprocessor system with HiPi bus in terms of processor utilizatIOn through simulation. Each of cache coherence protocol is described by state transition diagram, and then the probability of each state is calculated by Markov steady state. The calculated probability of each state is used as input parameters of simulation, and modeling and simulation are implemented and performed by using SLAM II graphic symbols and language. Second, we propose the HiPi bus which supports cache-to-cache transfer, and analyze the performance of multiprocessor system with proposed HiPi bus in terms of processor utilization through simulation. Considered cache coherence protocols for the simulation are Write-through, Write-once, Berkely, Synapse, Illinois, Firefly, and Dragon.

For mobile application, semiconductor packages are increasingly moving toward high density, miniaturization, lighter and multi-functions. Typical wafer level packages (WLP) is fan-in design, it can not meet high I/O requirement. The fan-out wafer level packages (FOWLPs) with reconfiguration technology have recently emerged as a new WLP technology. In FOWLP, warpage is one of the most critical issues since the thickness of FOWLP is thinner than traditional IC package and warpage of WLP is much larger than the die level package. Warpage affects the throughput and yield of the next manufacturing process as well as wafer handling and fabrication processability. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of warpage and main parameters which affect the warpage deformation of FOWLP using the finite element numerical simulation. In order to minimize the warpage, the characteristics of warpage for various epoxy mold compounds (EMCs) and carrier materials are investigated, and DOE optimization is also performed. In particular, warpage after EMC molding and after carrier detachment process were analyzed respectively. The simulation results indicate that the most influential factor on warpage is CTE of EMC after molding process. EMC material of low CTE and high Tg (glass transition temperature) will reduce the warpage. For carrier material, Alloy42 shows the lowest warpage. Therefore, considering the cost, oxidation and thermal conductivity, Alloy42 or SUS304 is recommend for a carrier material.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between cognitive levels and achievement of science process skills. A science laboratory process skills test based on optional instrument of the SISS was administered to a sample of 162 students in the 8th grade. Practical assessment tasks consisted of the contents about acid, base, density, and a property of cobalt chloride. The format of this practical test was the station type that students had to conduct a short activity. Science process skills included three sub-skills which were categorized as designing, performing, and reasoning. As cognitive levels develop from concrete operational stage to transition stage and formal operational stage. total scores of science process skills and mean scores of sub-skills were significantly increased. Regardless of cognitive levels. all students were more successful on performing than designing or reasoning. In case of being controlled cognitive levels, gender differences and area differences were not detected in achievement of science process skills. According to these results. there was a strong relationship between cognitive levels and achievement of science process skills by practical assessment. This study implies that considering student's cognitive levels is very important for improving science process skills.
