  • Eigenvalues are taken as performance criteria for structural damping design using viscoelastic material. Given material properties, optimal distribution of damping material is sought based on eigenvalue sensitivity. For eigenanalysis of frequency dependent viscoelastic material rented structures, Golla-Hughes-McTavish(GHM) model is used and some dominant modes are chosen for consideration. (omitted)

  • Estimation of damping ratio for vibration signals measured on the passenger car's seat is useful for the objective evaluation of impact harshness in car. The vibration signal is a transient signal represented by many coupled modes of suspension system. Wavelet transform automatically decouples these modes in the time-frequency domain. Damping ratios for decoupled modes are obtained by logarithmic treatment for the Wavelet transformed signal. The objective evaluation using Wavelet transform has been well corresponded with subjective evaluation done by skilled engineers.

  • This research demonstrates the transient response of a head disk assembly subjected to a half-sine shock pulse in the axial direction. In case of disk analysis, the numerical method presented by Barasch and Chen is used. Galerkin method is used with mode shape by numerical method. head-suspension system is modeled by the cantilever in order to get simulation results. Simulation results about total system of HDA are calculated by Runge-Kutta method.

  • In this paper we study the convergence behavior of the least mean fourth(LMF) algorithm where the error raised to the power of four is minimized for a multiple sinusoidal input and Gaussian measurement noise. Here we newly obtain the convergence equation for the sum of the mean of the squared weight errors, which indicates that the transient behavior can differ depending on the relative sizes of the Gaussian noise and the convergence constant. It should be noted that no similar results can be expected from the previous analysis by Walach and Widrow/sup [1]/.

  • An efficient dynamic response analysis method of structures supported by nonlinear resilient mounts when subjected to the transient base excitations is presented by using the structural synthesis method in time domain. Through a numerical example, the validity of the presented method is verified by comparison of the results with those of the 'traditional' analysis method.

  • Cardiovascular, respiratory and electrodermal responses to acute stress episodes modeled by combined presentation of intense white noise and performance of word recognition task with noise background were studied in 15 college students. Experimental procedure consisted in sessions with white noise, word recognition task presentation with noise background and test with noise background. Recorded physiological variables were analyzed in terms of their sensitivity to detect activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of autonomic nervous system and thus reflect autonomic arousal level during shout-term stress-inducing experimental manipulations. It was shown that performance of effortful mental task with noise background elicited significant physiological responses typical for active coping behavior, namely electrodermal arousal and increased cardiovascular activity. this response profile was more profound as compared to white noise only or attending task in noise background. However, all physiological responses were mostly phasic, without long-term tonic changes, since almost all variables recovered to their initial baseline levels, suggesting that dominant autonomic mechanisms in transient acute stress episodes were of parasympathetic nature (withdrawal in stress with subsequent activation in restoration period), while sympathetic contribution was not long-lasting. Nevertheless, increased number of stressors and their longer exposure may result in higher profile of tonic sympathetic arousal and reduced functional role of vagal mechanisms in autonomic balance regulation.

  • In this study, the analysis of radiation noise and chattering noise of vehicle seat recliner was conducted through testing and analysis. First, operating noise was measured by seat back frame and recliner, and chattering noise was confirmed. Next, the transient dynamic analysis was performed, and the result was mapped to the acoustic analysis. Finally, the test and analysis were compared and analyzed. The results are as follow. First, it was found that the peaks appeared in common in the range of 620~650Hz, 1,240~1,290 Hz, and 1,840~1,940 Hz. It was judged that the dynamic characteristics of the recliner system overlapped with the rotation component of the motor to cause amplification of noise and vibration. Next, as a result of imaging the radiation noise analysis, it was judged that the noise radiated in the forward and backward direction has a greater influence than the direction of the rotation axis when the ear position of the person is taken as a reference.

  • The analysis of dynamic responses are carried out on several orthotropic systems due to transient line source. These include infinite and semi-infinite spaces. The media possess orthotropic or higher symmetry. The lode is in the form of a normal stress acting with parallel to symmetry axis on the plane of symmetry within the materials. The results are first derived for responses of infinite media due to a harmonic line source. Subsequently the results for semi-infinite are derived by using superposition of the solution in the infinite medium together with a scattered solution from the boundaries. The sum of both solutions has to satisfy stress free boundary conditions thereby leading to the complete solutions. Explicit splutions for the displacements due to transient line loads are then obtaind by using Cargniard-DeHoop contour.

  • In this paper, different criteria fur determining hue change time in the hue detection based transient liquid crystals technique were compared. Results showed that methods utilizing threshold of intensity or saturation gave many missing points and quality of the calculated results were strongly depends on the value of threshold. Wider bandwidth in the hue bandwidth method showed better distribution of calculated hue change time, but induced ambiguity in the hue change time. In the time-hue curve fitting method, the distribution of evaluated hue change time was smooth and reasonable, and, by the nature of curve fitting, the noise effect on the hue was successfully considered in calculating of the hue change time. Compared to other methods, it is expected that the time-hue curve fitting method would provide better and accurate hue change time in the hue detection based transient liquid crystals technique.

  • In the quality assurance check process of DC motor systems, even though the overall sound pressure level is acceptable, there is an incident that subjective evaluation leads to failure in product quality due to annoying noise. This kind of problem may be originated from the manufacturing or assembly process. In this paper, the transient spectral analysis, or the time-frequency analysis is applied to the noise quality problem. For the case study, the cause of annoying noise in the wind shield wiper motor is experimentally analyzed in detail. It is concluded that the defect in the shaft causes the impact noise which is not detectable by steady spectral analysis. Also demonstrated is how the time-frequency analysis is effectively applied to the annoying noise identification of the rotor-gear system.
