To meet increasing power demand, 500 kV power systems are under consideration in the regions of some Middle Asian countries. As the power system voltage becomes higher, the cost for the power system insulation increases significantly. 500 kV transmission systems will become the basis of a region's power system and they require much higher system reliability. Consequently, by the methods of limiting overvoltages effectively, a reasonable insulation design and coordination must be accomplished. In particular, the Substations must be constructed to be of outdoor type. In order to determine the various factors for the insulation design, the EMTP (Electro-magnetic transient program) is used for the magnification of transient phenomena of the 500 kV systems in the planned network. In this paper, we will explain the calculation results of lightning overvoltages by the EMTP for lightning protection design for the 500 kV substations. To obtain reliable results, the multi-story tower model and EMTP/TACS model are introduced for the simulation of dynamic arc characteristics.
Thermal characteristics, such as diffusivity and temperature induced change in the fiber mode index of rotation sensing fiber coil are critical factors which determine the time varying, thermo-optically induced bias drift of interferometric fiber-optic gyroscopes (IFOGs). In this study, temperature dependence of the transient effect is analyzed in terms of the thermal characteristics of the fiber coil at three different temperatures. By applying an analytic model to the measured bias in the experiments, comprehensive thermal factors of the fiber coil could be extracted effectively. The validity of the model was confirmed by the fact that the extracted values are reasonable results in comparison with well known properties of the materials of the fiber coil. Temperature induced changes in the critical factors were confirmed to be essential in compensating the transient effect over a wide temperature range.
Virtual computer numerical control(VCNC) arises from the concept that one can experience pseudo-real machining with a computer-numerically-controlled(CNC) machine before actually cutting an object. To achieve accurate VCNC, it is important to determine abnormal behavior, such as chatter, before cutting. Detecting chatter requires an understanding of the dynamic cutting force model. In general, the cutting process is a closed loop system that consists of structural and cutting dynamics. Machining instability, namely chatter, results from the interaction between these two dynamics. Several previous reports have predicted stability for a single path, using a simple cutting force model without tool runout and penetration effects. This study considers both tool runout and penetration effects, using experimental modal analysis, to obtain more accurate predictions. The machining stability in the corner cut, which is a typical transient cut, was assessed from an evaluation of the cutting configurations at the corner.
Experimental and numerical study was done to confirm the effect of the flexible tube in pipeline on transient flow oscillation. Experiment was made for a pipeline with and without deformable flexible tube using a single pumping system of main stainless pipe. The wave speeds of main pipe and flexible tube were calculated from the pipe material properties, structures, and boundary conditions. Time dependent pressure fluctuations were calculated for the pipeline using the simple and the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic models for the deformation of main pipe and flexible tube. Pressure calculated by the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model showed better agreement with measured one than pressure by the simple model. Experimental and numerical results show that the maximum pressure as well as amplitude of pressure oscillation was decreased by inserting short flexible tube in pipeline. Hence, inserted short flexible tube to pipeline was found to be effective for the suppression of strong pressure oscillation. Moreover, the wave speed in pipe was discussed based on numerical and experimental results.
A simplified steam generator model has been developed for the simulation of the operational transients of CANDU nuclear power plant. For the analysis of the secondary side, a control volume approach is used and the flow conservation equations are applied for each control volume. The typical steam generator control logic such as the level control and the pressure control are incorporated into the steam generator model with appropriate interface conditions. The steam line including ASDV, CSDV, and governor valve also has been modeled. Test results for typical operational transient case show reasonable transient behavior of steam generator in a real time basis, which is promising for a CANDU engineering simulator.
This paper presents a method for determination of UPFC control quantity in order to enhance the power system transient stability energy margin using Genetic Algorithms in multi-machine system. We use the minimization of energy margin as the object function in GA. To set critical energy, we use the potential energy boundary surface(PEBS) method. PEBS is one of the transient energy function(TEF) method. And we used the series voltage compensator as the UPFC model. The proposed method is applied to 6-bus, 7-line, 4-machine model system to show its effectiveness.
Numerical results are presented for the 2-dimensional turbulent transient heat transfer of the shell/tube heat exchanger with a step change of the inlet temperature in the primary side. Heat transfer boundary conditions outside the pipe are given partially by the convection heat transfer conditions and partially by insulated conditions. Calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady two-dimensional elliptic forms for the Reynolds-averaged governing equations for the mass, momentum and energy. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretization equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm was employed for the calculation procedure. Turbulent model used is the algebraic model proposed by Cebeci-Smith. Results presented include the time variant Nusselt number distribution, average temperature distribution and outlet temperatures for the various inlet temperatures and flow rates.
Steady state simulation and dynamic simulation were performed to analyze the operational characteristics of a multi-type refrigeration system, Fully distributed model was adopted to simulate the steady state and transient responses of the system. The main aim was to see the effect of one indoor unit on the other unit. Numerical simulations were carried out for various operation conditions of an indoor unit - secondary fluid inlet temperature, mass flow rate and expansion valve opening. The results showed that the inlet temperature and mass flow rate of the secondary fluid of one indoor unit had minor effect on the operation of the other unit. However, the opening of the expansion valve had significant effect on the performance of the other unit.
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFC) are very interesting power source due to high power density, simple construction and operation at low temperature. But they have problems such as high cost, improvement of performance and effect of temperature. This problems can be approached using mathematical models which are useful tools for analysis and optimization of fuel cell performance and for heat and water management, in this paper, transient model consists of various energy terms associated with fuel cell operation using the mass and energy balance equation. And water transfer in the membrane is composed of back diffusion and electro-osmotic drag. The temperature calculated by transient model approximately agreed with the temperature measured by experiment in constant current condition.
In this work, Analytical model for voltage and current characteristics of NPT(Non-PunchThrough) IGBT(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) was represented. voltage and current characteristics models were based on prediction on power loss of NPT IGBT during transient condition. For Analytical current model, excess carrier concentration and accumulated charge in active base width was analyzed with time variance. Analytical models were simulated by varying lifetime of excess minority carrier.
