A reactor inlet header break experiment, B9401, performed in the RD-14M multi channel test facility was analyzed using RELAP5/MOD3.2 and RELAP5/CANDU[1]. The RELAP5 has been developed for the use in the analysis of the transient behavior of the pressurized water reactor. A recent study showed that the RELAP5 could be feasible even for the simulation of the thermal hydraulic behavior of CANDU reactors. However, some deficiencies in the prediction of fuel sheath temperature and transient behavior in athe headers were identified in the RELAP5 assessments. The RELAP5/CANDU has been developing to resolve the deficiencies in the RELAP5 and to improve the predictability of the thermal-hydraulic behaviors of the CANDU reactors. In the RELAP5/CANDU, critical heat flux model, horizontal flow regime map, heat transfer model in horizontal channel, etc. were modified or added to the RELAP5/MOD3.2. This study aims to identify the applicability of both codes, in particular, in the multi-channel simulation of the CANDU reactors. The RELAP5/MOD3.2 and the RELAP5/CANDU analyses demonstrate the code's capability to predict reasonably the major phenomena occurred during the transient. The thermal-hydraulic behaviors of both codes are almost identical, however, the RELAP5/CANDU predicts better the heater sheath temperature than the RELAP5/MOD3.2. Pressure differences between headers govern the flow characteristics through the heated sections, particularly after the ECI. In determining header pressure, there are many uncertainties arisen from the complicated effects including steady state pressure distribution. Therefore, it would be concluded that further works are required to reduce these uncertainties, and consequently predict appropriately thermal-hydraulic behaviors in the reactor coolant system during LOCA analyses.
Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on hemispherical convex and concave surfaces with a turbulent impinging jet were made. The Reynolds number used was 11000, 23000, 50000 and the nozzle- to- surface distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 and the jet angle was a = $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. In case of concave surface, the Nusselt number at the stagnation point decreases as the jet angle increases and has the maximum value for L/d=6. The X-axis Nusselt number distributions exhibit secondary maxima at $0^{\circ}$$\leq$ a $\leq$$15^{\circ}$, L/d $\leq$ 4 for X/d<0(upstream) and at $0^{\circ}$$\leq$ a $\leq$$40^{\circ}$, L/d $\leq$ 4 and at $30^{\circ}$$\leq$ a $\leq$$40^{\circ}$, 4 < L/d $\leq$ 6 for X/d<0(downstream). The secondary maximum occurs at long distance from the stagnation point as the jet angle increases or the nozzle-to-surface distance decreases. In case of convex, correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt number according to Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle are presented. In the stagnation point, in term of Ren, n ranges from 0.43 in case of 2 $\leq$ L/d $\leq$ 6 to 0.45 in case of 6 < L/d $\leq$ 10, there agrees roughly appears to be laminar boundary layer result. The maximum Nusselt number, in this experiment, occurred in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. On this condition about surface curvature D/d=10, the maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter. The ratio of the maximum Nusselt number to the stagnation Nusselt number increases as the jet angle increases.
Temperature distribution, transformation and residual stresses generated during the quenching process of carbon steel. It follows many difficulties in the analytical considerations on those quenching process because of the coupling effects on temperature and metallic structures. In this paper one of the basic study on the quenching stresses was carried out for the case of the round steel bar specimen(SM45C) with 40mm both in its diameter and length. The temperature distributions considering strain hysteresis were numerically calculated by finite element technique. In calculating the transient temperature field, the heat flux between water and rod surface was determined from the heat transfer coefficient. The gradient of temperature is almost same to geometric of specimen. At early stage of the quenching process, the abrupt temperature gradient has been shown in the surface of the specimen.
The pressurized light water cooled, medium power (330 MWt) SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) has been under development at KAERI for a dual purpose : seawater desalination and electricity generation. The SMART design verification phase was followed to conduct various separate effects tests and comprehensive integral effect tests. The high temperature / high pressure thermal-hydraulic test facility, VISTA(Experimental Verification by Integral Simulation of Transient and Accidents) has been constructed to simulate the SMART-P (the one fifth scaled pilot plant) by KAERI. Experimental tests have been performed to investigate the thermal-hydraulic dynamic characteristics of the primary and the secondary systems. Heat transfer characteristics and natural circulation performance of the PRHRS (Passive Residual Heat Removal System) of SMART-P were also investigated using the VISTA facility. The coolant flows steadily in the natural circulation loop which is composed of the steam generator (SG) primary side, the secondary system, and the PRHRS. The heat transfers through the PRHRS heat exchanger and ECT are sufficient enough to enable the natural circulation of the coolant.
Systematic research has been conducted by KAERI to develop a supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle energy conversion system coupled with a sodium cooled fast reactor. For the development of the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle ECS, KAERI researched four major fields, separately. For the system development, computer codes were developed to design and analyze the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle ECS coupled with the KALIMER-600. Computer codes were developed to design and analyze the performance of the major components such as the turbomachinery and the high compactness PCHE heat exchanger. Three dimensional flow analysis was conducted to evaluate their performance. A new configuration for a PCHE heat exchanger was developed by using flow analysis, which showed a very small pressure loss compared with a previous PCHE while maintaining its heat transfer rate. Transient characteristics for the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle coupled with KALIMER-600 were also analyzed using the developed computer codes. A Na-$CO_2$ pressure boundary failure accident was analyzed with a computer code that included a developed model for the Na-$CO_2$ chemical reaction phenomena. The MMS-LMR code was developed to analyze the system transient and control logic. On the basis of the code, the system behavior was analyzed when a turbine load was changed. This paper contains the current research overview of the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle coupled to the KALIMER-600 as an alternative energy conversion system.
An analysis has been performed for active thermal control of the KOMPSAT monopropellant rocket engine assembly, i.e., dual thruster module(DTM). The main efforts of this work have been directed at determining proper heater sizes for propellant valves and catalyst beds necessary to maintain their temperatures within specified temperature ranges under KOMPSAT environment and operational conditions. The TAS incorporated with TRASYS thermal radiation analyzer was used to establish a complete heat transfer model which allows to predict the DTM temperature as a function of time. The thermal analysis has been performed in transient mode to verify the appropriate power for catalyst bed heaters necessary to increase catalyst bed temperature to the required value within a specified period of time. Similar analysis has been executed to validate the heater power for the thermostatically controlled primary and redundant heater circuits used to prevent hydrazine freezing, i.e., single fault. Moreover the effect of the radiative property of thermal control coating of heat shield was examined. Thruster firing condition was also simulated for the heat soakback condition. As a consequence, all thermal analysis results for DTM satisfactorily met the thermal requirements for the KOMPSAT DTM under the worst case average voltage, i.e. 25 volt.
Solid state joining techniques are increasingly applied in a wide range of industrial applications. Friction welding is a solid state welding technique that is used to join similar or dissimilar materials. In this study, friction welding was applied to rotor shaft composed of a disk and a shaft. The disk and shaft were manufactured by hot forging and rolling, respectively. The aim of the study was to predict the structural characteristics during hot forging and friction welding process for rotor shaft of turbo charger. The structural characteristics were determined by heat input and heat affected zone (HAZ) during a short cycle time. Thus, transient FE analysis for hot forging and friction welding was based on heat transfer. The results were used to predict structural characteristics during hot forging and friction welding processes. The prototype of rotor shaft was manufactured by the result-based process parameters.
For the design guide of a vessel operating in cold region, numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the weather-tight door which installed the heating cables by using ANSYS 13.0 Transient Thermal. The numerical analysis was performed by considering Advection-Diffusion equation. This study based on the experimental results of 'A study on Anti-Icing Technique for Weather-Tight Door of Ice-Strengthened Vessels'(Jeong, et al., 2011a) in KIOST. For validation of the numerical analysis results, the cold chamber experimental data measured by the heat sensors in certain location of the weather-tight door was used. The external environmental temperature which varies from $5^{\circ}C$ to $-55^{\circ}C$ was considered in numerical analysis. Also three different heating cables which have the heat capacity of 33W/m, 45W/m and 66W/m were adapted for the design parameters to be the most efficient and guidelines for anti-icing design of the weather tight door.
