Objective : Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been used to prevent and treat cerebrovascular accident, such as stroke, and many studies of acupuncture and moxibustion concerning stroke have been undertaken in humans and various animals. However, the protective effect of the electroacupuncture (EA) of Huan-do (GB30) on the transient forebrain ischemia injury has not been published. Methods : The nenroprotective effects of EA (2 ms, 10 Hz, and 1 - 2 mA) of GB30 on the transient forebrain ischemia injury were investigated by immunohistochemistry of c-Fos-like protein in Sprague-Dawley rats. Results : The transient forebrain ischemia injury resulted in increased expression of c-Fos-like protein (cFL) in the dentate gyms (DG) and CAl for 6 hrs after ischemia, and EA increased significantly expression of cFL in the CAl and DG. For 48 hrs after, there was delayed expression of cFL at the CAl and DG, representing the sign of neuronal cell death, but EA decreased the delayed expression of cFL, significantly. Conclusion : These results suggest that the nenroprotective effects of EA on transient forebrain ischemia injury may be related to excitatory regulation of cFL at the early stage and inhibitory regulation in the long term.
A numerical and experimental studies are carried out to investigate the transient heat transfer characteristics of 5kWth dish-type solar air receiver. Measured solar radiation and temperatures at several different locations are used as boundary conditions for numerical simulation. Many parameters' effects (reflectivity of the reflector, the thermal conductivity of the receiver body, transmissivity of the quartz window, etc.) on the thermal performance are investigated. Discrete Transfer Method is used to calculate the radiation heat exchange in the receiver. A transient heat transfer model is developed and the rate of radiation, convection and conduction heat transfer are calculated. Comparing the experimental and numerical results, good agreement is obtained. Using the numerical model, the transient heat transfer characteristics of volumetric air receiver for dish-type solar thermal systems are known and the transient thermal performance of the receiver can be estimated.

This work studies the effects of transient reflectance on the thermal responses of a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort laser heating. The heating process is calculated using the conventional conduction model (parabolic one-step: POS), parabolic two-step model (PTS) with and without variable properties, hyperbolic two-step model (HTS). Results from the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS model with variable properties, however, results in totally different temperature profiles compared to those from POS models or calculation with constant properties. Transient reflectances are estimated from electron temperature distributions and based on the linear relationship between the electron temperature and complex dielectric constants. Reflectance of the front surface can be changed with respect to dielectric constants, while those of the rear surface remain unchanged.
Dynamic characteristics of the bell-type structure including acoustic effects and transient dynamic problems were analyzed numerically. Natural frequencies, mode shapes and transient dynamic analysis used the finite element method with 3-D general shell element. Mode shapes and stress distributions of transient dynamic analysis were expressed by computer graphics. The method using this study was evaluated by comparision of theoretical results at reference papers(14), (15) and the experimental test using Fast Fourier Transform analyzer. Vibrational modes governing acoustic characteristics of the typical bell-type structure depended on the first flexural mode(4-0 mode) and the second flexural mode(6-0 mode). Asymmetric effects by Dangiwas, acoustic holes gave rise to beat frequencies, and the Dangjwa was found to be most effective. When impact load acted on the bell, stress concentration occured at the rim part of bell. It was found that the bell type structure should be designed thickly at the rim part in order to prevent impact load from stress concentration.
Several extensions to the Thelandersson phenomenological model for concrete under transient high temperatures are explored. These include novel expressions for the temperature degradation of the elastic modulus and the temperature dependency of the coefficient of the free thermal strain. Furthermore, a coefficient of thermo mechanical strain is proposed as a bi-linear function of temperature. Good qualitative agreement with various test results taken from the literature is demonstrated. Further extensions include the effects of plastic straining and temperature dependent Poisson's ratio. The models performance is illustrated on several simple benchmark problems under uniaxial and biaxial stress states.
In this study, in order to investigate the effects of wall roughness on the hydraulic characteristics of chlorine contactor, CFD simulation and tracer tests were conducted for both of reactors whose walls are made of concrete and lined with PE(Poly Ethylene). In the case of walls contacted with water being lined with PE (relatively lower roughness), the flow within reactor is closer to plug flow than that in the case of concrete walls (relatively higher roughness). Especially, the longer tail of C-curve from the results of transient CFD simulation can tell that Morill index in the case concrete walls is much higher than that in the case of walls be lined with lower roughness material.
Ignition transient is a. very rapid process lasting only in the order of 100 milliseconds and therefore it is difficult to measure all relevant ballistic properties. Numerical simulation is thus useful to quantify some of these hard to measure flow and ballistic properties. One-dimensional model was employed to study the effects of aging using simplified aging scenarios for both N-H sustainer and booster motors. Also the effects of newly designed igniter on the ignition of N-H sustainer was simulated. Radiation effects could be significant in terms of energy flux increase to the propellant surface and the energy exchange between the combustion gas itself. One dimension implementation of radiation showed significant effects for rear-mounted igniter. Implementation of radiation effects into 2-D axi-symmetric numerical model was completed and its effects on the N-H sustainer were examined. To have a reliable prediction of computer model on ignition transient, accurate chemical property data on the propellant and igniter gas are required. It was found that such property data on aged N-H motors are not available. Chemical aging model can be used to predict to some degree of accuracy effects of aging on chemical and mechanical properties. Such a model was developed, albeit 2-dimensional, to study migration of moisture through a representative solid rocket motor configuration.

The current paper focuses on the analysis of transient cavitating flow in pressurised polyethylene pipes, which are characterized by viscoelastic rheological behaviour. A hydraulic transient solver that describes fluid transients in plastic pipes has been developed. This solver incorporates the description of dynamic effects related to the energy dissipation (unsteady friction), the rheological mechanical behaviour of the viscoelastic pipe and the cavitating pipe flow. The Discrete Vapour Cavity Model (DVCM) and the Discrete Gas Cavity Model (DGCM) have been used to describe transient cavitating flow. Such models assume that discrete air cavities are formed in fixed sections of the pipeline and consider a constant wave speed in pipe reaches between these cavities. The cavity dimension (and pressure) is allowed to grow and collapse according to the mass conservation principle. An extensive experimental programme has been carried out in an experimental set-up composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, assembled at Instituto Superior T$\acute{e}$cnico of Lisbon, Portugal. The experimental facility is composed of a single pipeline with a total length of 203 m and inner diameter of 44 mm. The creep function of HDPE pipes was determined by using an inverse model based on transient pressure data collected during experimental runs without cavitating flow. Transient tests were carried out by the fast closure of the ball valves located at downstream end of the pipeline for the non-cavitating flow and at upstream for the cavitating flow. Once the rheological behaviour of HDPE pipes were known, computational simulations have been run in order to describe the hydraulic behaviour of the system for the cavitating pipe flow. The calibrated transient solver is capable of accurately describing the attenuation, dispersion and shape of observed transient pressures. The effects related to the viscoelasticity of HDPE pipes and to the occurrence of vapour pressures during the transient event are discussed.
The electric propulsion system requires more reliability and safety than the conventional propulsion system because any sudden changes of electric system would bring tremendous effects on the ship's safety and propulsion. So it is very important to consider the potential transient effects. This paper discusses one of the worst electric accident. That is, one or two of generators are out of service in normal seagoing condition. And the appropriate measures are simulated in order to prevent the frequency decline that can bring the other generator's tripping. In addition, the relation between the transient effects and the major factors(inertia of generator/motors, governor's drooping characteristic and response speed) are also identified using the ETAP software.
