  • In this paper, the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using double quench was suggested and its transient current limiting characteristics were analyzed. The suggested flux-lock type SFCL using double quench consists of two magnetically coupled windings and two $high-T_{c}$ superconducting (HTSC) elements connected in series with each winding. To analyze the transient current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using double quench, the short-circuit tests according to the fault angles, which affect the transient component of the fault current right after the fault occurs, were executed. From the comparative analysis for the short-circuit tests at both $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ fault angles, the useful transient current limiting operations of the suggested flux-lock type SFCL through the double or the single quench occurrence were confirmed.

  • Transient operations for an integral type reactor, SMART-P, have been experimentally investigated using a thermal-hydraulic integral test facility, VISTA (Experimental Verification by Integral Simulation of Transients and Accidents), in order to verify the system design and performance of the SMART-P, a pilot plant of SMART. The VISTA facility was subjected to various accident conditions such as feedwater increase and decrease, loss of coolant flow, and control rod withdrawal accidents in order to elucidate the thermal-hydraulic responses following such accidents and finally to verify the system design of the SMARTP. Full functional control logics have been implemented in the VISTA facility in order to control the required control action for an accident simulation. As one of the sensitivity tests to verify the PRHRS performance, the effects of the initial water level in the compensation tank are experimentally investigated. When the initial water level is 16%, the water is quickly drained and nitrogen gas is then introduced into the PRHR system, resulting in deterioration of the PRHRS performance. It is thus found that nitrogen ingression should be prevented to ensure stable PRHRS operation.

  • Single Event Transient has a critical impact on highly integrated logic circuits which are currently common in various commercial and consumer electronic devices. Reliability against the soft and intermittent faults will become a key metric to evaluate such complex system on chip designs. Our previous work analyzing soft errors was focused on parallelizing and optimizing error propagation procedures for individual transient faults on logic and sequential cells. In this paper, we present a new propagation technique where a fault binary decision diagram (BDD) continues to merge every new fault generated from the subsequent logic gate traversal. BDD-based transient fault analysis has been known to provide the most accurate results that consider both electrical and logical properties for the given design. However, it suffers from a limitation in storing and handling BDDs that can be increased in size and operations by the exponential order. On the other hand, the proposed method requires only a visit to each logic gate traversal and unnecessary BDDs can be removed or reduced. This results in an approximately 20-200 fold speed increase while the existing parallelized procedure is only 3-4 times faster than the baseline algorithm.

  • For measuring the transient electromagnetic fields and related quantities created by disconnector operations in GIS, one needs the wide bandwidth sensors with simple transfer functions. This paper describes a new developed electric field sensor to measure the very fast transient electric fields and voltages, and the measuring principle, design and construction of planar electric field sensor are described. A calibration and/or correction technique of the sensor is investigated which enables an accurate determination of the sensor response to the time-changing electric fields. As a consequence, the low voltage calibrations certify that a rise time of 1.7 [ns] is achieved for the planar electric field sensor and a total bandwidth extending from several Hz to 200 MHz for the measuring system which presents the constant division ratio as a function of frequency.

  • Autoreclosure provides a means of improving power transmitting ability and system stability. Conventional reclosure adopts the fixed dead time interval strategy, where the reclosure is activated after a time delay to restore the system to normal as quickly as possible without regard to the system conditions. However, these simple techniques cannot provide optimal operating performance. This paper presents an adaptive autoreclosure algorithm including variable dead time, optimal reclosure, phase-by-phase reclosure and emergency extended equal-area criterion (EEEAC) algorithm in order to improve system stability. The reclosure algorithm performs the operations that are attuned to the power system conditions. The proposed adaptive reclosure algorithm is verified and tested using ATP/EMTP MODELS, and the simulation results show that the system oscillations are reduced and the transient stability is enhanced by employing the proposed adaptive reclosure algorithm.

  • The work described in this paper deals with the proposed application of an Artificial Neural Network Model for the Advanced Pressurized Water Reactor APR-1400 transient identification. The approach adopted for testing the network take note of the expectation which should be fulfilled by a network for real-time application, like testing with data in on-line mode and use of actual or real-life patterns for training. The recall test performed demonstrates that use of neural network for transient identification is indeed an attractive preposition.

The conventional reclosure adopts the fixed dead time interval strategy, that is, the reclosure is activated after a time delay to restore the system to normal as quickly as possible without regard to the system conditions, however, these simple techniques cannot give the optimal operating performance. • The structural analysis of a reactor coolant pump(RCP) of a nuclear power plant is very important for the safety assessment of the plant. Accurate boundary conditions for the heat transfer coefficient are required for reliable thermal stress analysis of the pump casing, especially in transient operations of the pump since the coolant properties are largely dependent on operational conditions. In the present study, a 3D mixed flow type coolant pump was modeled from the RCP drawings and analyzed in the steady state and number of transient flow conditions by using a commercial code STAR-CD. From the result of the computation, it is seen that the average heat transfer coefficients for the cases considered are found to be the suggested values of the manufacturer, Westinghouse Energy System. The unevenness in local heat transfer coefficients, however, is found to be considerable so that the use of average heat transfer coefficients in all boundaries might not give reliable thermal stress predictions.

  • ELT(emergency locator transmitter) has assisted in the rescue of thousands of lives in distress. Aviators, mariners and land users being equipped with distress beacons are capable of transmitting distress signals to the satellites in emergency situations anywhere in the world. In this paper, Drop/Impact simulation was performed for ELT Body-case. FE model for Body-case was constructed with MSC/Dytran and refined using the Karas example simulation for Body-case prototype. Shock/impact survivability analysis was performed for ELT operations. FE model constructed with MSC/Nastran. Transient response analysis for refined ELT model was perfomed for ELT under impact shock loading condition.

  • We scrutinized the 64 cases of TGA and Taussig-Bing anomaly who underwent Senning and Mustard operations from Jan. 1981 to May 1988. The ratio of male to female was 45; 19, and the age at operation varied from 2 months to 18 years [mean 18.9*32.9 months]. The in-hospital mortality was in 24 cases [37.5%] and the major causes were myocardial failure and congestive heart failure associated with arrhythmias. The risk factors for hospital mortality were complex TGA, prolonged bypass time and high postoperative CVP. In addition, mortality increased during the first year the procedure was used. Late mortality occurred in 6 cases and the major causes was congestive heart failure, and there was not any significant risk factor noted in late mortality. Early arrhythmia developed in 37.5%, all of which were transient and self limited and 7 cases of early mortality were related to the arrhythmias. Late arrhythmias developed in 8 cases, but 7 cases were transient. One case died with junctional tachycardia. Of significance the one case that died late by arrhythmia had a similar junctional tachycardia in the early postoperative period. The survival rate in all cases disregarding initial in-hospital mortality 1YSR 89.8% and 5YSR 84.3%, but because of short duration of follow up this is not significant. We concluded that early hospital mortality could be decreased by operating at an earlier age and by adjusting the appropriate operation method.
