High temperature superconducting(HTS) windings for an HTS transformer which have been developed have two kinds of type, one is the layer type and the other is disk type. The disk type windings have advantages over the layer type ones for a power transformer such as good insulation and limit of voltage stress. But this kind of HTS winding generates excessive AC losses caused by strong magnetic field component perpendicular to the surface of the HTS wire. Nevertheless, the layer type windings have adopted for an HTS power transformer so far because of the small AC losses of the HTS windings. We propose a new winding method for a high voltage HTS transformer which has advantages of both type of HTS windings, and we call it continuous disk type HTS winding. This new type of HTS winding consists of pile of lots of HTS disk windings which have no resistive joint between them. A prototype of an HTS winding was fabricated by the new winding method we proposed and characteristic test was carried out. The test result shows that the new type HTS windings can be applied to HTS power transformers, especially to the high voltage ones.
Shortage of electric power occurs frequently along with increased electric power demand. ESS is a precaution to solve this issue. Household ESS has a capacity of approximately 3 kW/7 kWh. Household ESS batteries are typically designed with nominal voltages between 40 and 50 V. To connect household ESS with a 220 V AC system, low battery voltages in power conditioning system (PCS) should be boosted. To boost low battery voltage and match it with AC grid voltage, the use of a transformer for a commercial frequency can be considered. To attenuate switching harmonics of the household single-phase ESS-PCS, LC filter can be installed in two positions: on the primary side or on the secondary side of a transformer. A method has been used generally in single-phase inverters for the ESS-PCS. In another method, however, the output efficiency of the ESS-PCS may be decreased. Parasitic components of the transformer can affect voltage losses, when the square wave with the switching frequency in the ESS-PCS is passed through the transformer windings. In this work, the characteristics of the transformer according to the position of an LC filter are investigated for household single-phase ESS-PCS.
In a large power transformer, insulating oil is forced to circulate for cooling the heat generated by the losses within windings and core. When insulating oil flows and rubs against various materials, such as insulating paper or core, the electrostatic charges are separated at the interface of the oil and the solid material. This paper considers the streaming electrification of various materials used in the transformer. In this study, we show that a solid material such as paper is negatively charged. On the other hand, a solid material such as core is positively charged.
The conventional high frequency phase-shifted full bridge dc/dc converter has a disadvantage that a circulating current flows through transformer and switching devices during the freewheeling interval. Due to this circulating current, RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices are increased. To alleviate this problem, this paper provides a circulating current free type high frequency soft switching phase-shifted full bridge (FB) dc/dc converter with the modified energy recovery snubber (ERS) attached at the secondary side of transforemr.
In this study, we propose a small high voltage power supply which use a half-bridge ZCS resonant and Cockroft-Walton on circuit, for ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator). This power supply transfers energy from ZCS resonant inverter to step-up transformer and the transformer secondary is applied to the Cockroft-Walton circuit for generating high voltage as discharging source of electrodes. It is highly efficient because its amount of switching losses are reduced by virtue of the current resonant half-bridge inverter, and also due to the small size, low parasitic capacitance in the transformer stage owing to the low number of winding turns of the step up transformer secondary combined with the Cockroft-Walton circuit. From these results, the best operational condition is obtained at the switching frequency of 9 kHz and the duty ratio of 50 % in this ESP.
A novel zero-voltage and zero-current switching PWM DC-DC converter with lowered conduction losses is presented in this paper. A new double two-switch forward high frequency transformer type soft-switching converter topology is developed to minimize circulating currents occurs during freewheeling period. This converter has advantages as less number of the components, simple control principle under constant operation frequency, free of transformer Imbalance effect. The principle of operation is illustrated with steady-state analysis. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed converter topology is verified by implementation of a 500w-100kHz breadboard using IGBTs.
This paper presents a method to reduce the stray loss of core Tie-Plate of distribution power transformer. The method combines a 3-dimensional FEM with PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm to determine the shape of the Tie-Plate that minimizes eddy current and flux-leakage losses. To verify the method a 24MVA distribution(cast-resin) transformer was simulated using one objective function and two design variables with some constraints. The final optimized Tie-Plate has nine($3{\times}3$) slots of 10mm width, 15mm thickness and 25mm distance. After four iterations, the Tie-Plate loss was reduced to about 21 % of the original.
Rise of the current level at power applications, such as, transformer, motor and power cable, need for using stacked HTS tapes. In this paper, we measured losses of the stacked HTS tapes. Three different types of the stacks which were made of 2 tapes, 3 tapes and 4 tapes, were tested Perpendicular magnetic field was applied to the HTS stacks as the external magnetic field. Effects of the gap between HTS tapes were examined.
Interest in energy efficiency and savings have been rising internationally. For this reason, the domestic housing construction in the area of power equipment is being actively studied. Currently approximately 400,000 per year of domestic housing is being built. Applies to housing construction during the current transformer capacity low utilization and load factor has been applied has been designed. In other words, excessively high reserve capacity has been applied. According to this problem, initial facility costs and power losses will cause because transformer low utilization be appropriated. Thus, the energy efficiency drops. In this paper, analysis of past utilization of the housing transformer, and applying an appropriate demand factor has been analyzing the energy loss reduction. this analysis of current domestic conditions for the proper housing transformer scheme is to calculate the capacity.
A high temperature superconducting power transformer gets its advantages over the conventional ones when the rated capacity of the HTS transformer becomes 30 MVA or more. The standard capacity of the recent 154 kV/ 22.9 kV power transformer is 3 phase 60 MVA in Korea which means that the rated current of the secondary becomes more than 1,500 amps. Considering the current capacities of the HTS wires being developed recently, it is inevitable to use the HTS wires in parallel in order to be applied to the power transformer. But nonuniform distribution of currents and large AC losses are major problems in parallel HTS windings setting aside the difficulties of making parallel windings. To solve these problems, several kinds of multiply laminated HTS wires were fabricated and tested for the application of these multiple wire to an HTS power transformer. Test results were compared with that of each other and the best were selected for the application to an HTS power transformer.
