  • The purpose of this study was to determine the variability of components of the vertical ground reaction force signal to seek the suitable number of attempt datum to be analyzed during running at 2m/s and 4m/s. For this study, six subjects (height mean:$174.5{\pm}4.4cm$, weight $671.5{\pm}116.4N.$, age:$25.0{\pm}yrs.$) were selected and asked to run at least 3 times each run condition randomly. FFT(fast Fourier transform) was used to analyze the frequency domain analysis of the vertical ground reaction forces signal and an accumulated PSD (power spectrum density) was calculated to reconstruct the certain signal. To examine the deviation of the vertical ground reaction between signals collected from an different number of attempt, variability of frequency, magnitude of passive peak, time up to the passive peak and maximum load rate were determined in a coefficient of variance. The variability analysis revealed that when analyze the vertical reaction force components at 2m/s speed running, which belongs to slow pace relatively, it would be good to calculate these components from signal of one attempt, but 4m/s speed running needs data collected from two attempts to decrease the deviation of signal between attempts. In summary, when analyzing the frequency and passive peak of the vertical reaction force signal during the fast run, it should be considered the number of attempt.

  • In this study, we measured the natural frequencies of aluminum honeycomb sandwich beams using digital image correlation technique. The vibration images were captured using two high speed digital cameras and the images were converted to displacements by the digital image correlation technique. Displacement data in time domain were tranformed to frequency domain data by fast Fourier transform software. To reduce noise invoked by random exitation, a spectrum averaging technique and Savitsky-Golay digital filter were adopted. A conventional vibration measurement using an accelerometer and a finite element analysis were performed to compare the results by high speed digital camera measurement method. In conclusion, new method using high speed digital cameras and digital image correlation technique can measure the vibration of beam structures and can be applied to bio-structures where sensors cannot be attached.

  • Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is new time-frequency analysis method to decompose the signal adaptively and efficiently. The key idea of EMD is to decompose the signal into a set of functions defined by the signal itself, named Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), which preserve the inherent properties of the original signal. Since the decomposition is based on the local time scale of the signal, it is not only applicable to nonlinear and non-stationary processes but also useful in biomedical signals like electrocardiogram (ECG). Traditional low-pass filter uses fourier transform to analysis signal in frequency domain, but EMD is filtered to maintain signal properties in time domain. This paper performed signal decomposition and filtering for noisy ECGs using EMD method. The proposed method is presented and compared with traditional low-pass filter by two performance indices. Our results show effectiveness for enhancement of the noisy ECG waveforms.

  • This paper discusses the acoustic performance of simple expansion chamber using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The CFD model consists of an axisymmetric grid with a single period sinusoid of acceptable amplitude and duration imposed at the inlet boundary condition. The time history of the static pressure is recorded at two points, one in the inlet pipe and one point in outlet pipe. The time history of the static pressure is converted to the frequency domain using Fourier Transform and the transmission loss (TL) of the muffler is obtained from the ratio of the static pressure at the inlet and outlet pipe. The transmission loss of CFD result is compared with that of the computational acoustic analysis using the boundary element method (BEM). There are some differences in two results due to the pressure drop according to the inlet and outlet pipe length. Therefore, the effects of the pressure drop to the transmission loss have to be considered.

  • The EMG signal of spinal cord injured patient is very feeble because that the information from central nervous system is not sufficiently transmitted to molter neuron or muscle fiber. Therefore the observer can not observe contraction and relaxation movement of muscle from the raw EMG signal. In this paper, we propose the muscle contraction and relaxation pattern analysis method of spinal cord injured patient whose EMG signal is composed of the sum of motor unit action potential train with additive white Gaussian noise and impulsive noise. From the EMG model, we denoise impulsive noise using median filter which is a kind of nonlinear filter and the output of median filter is transformed to wavelet transform domain for denoising additive white Gaussian noise using threshold level removal technique. As a result, we can obtain the clear contraction and relaxation pattern.

  • High-speed/precision servomechanisms have been widely used in the manufacturing and semiconductor industries. In order to ensure the required high-speed and high-precision specifications in servomechanisms, an integrated design methodology is required, where the interactions between mechanical and electrical subsystems will have to be considered simultaneously. For the first step of the integrated design process, it is necessary to obtain not only strict mathematical models of separate subsystems but also formulation of an integrated design problem. A two-degree-of-freedom controller described in the discrete-time domain is considered as an electrical subsystem in this paper. An accurate identification process of the mechanical subsystem is conducted to verify the obtained mathematical model. Mechanical and electrical constraints render the integrated design problem accurate. Analysis of the system performance according to design and operating parameters is conducted for better understanding of the dynamic behavior and interactions of the servomechanism. Experiments are performed to verify the validity of the integrated design problem in the x-Y positioning system.

  • For the fault diagnosis of three-phase induction motors, we propose a diagnosis algorithm based on mutual information and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The experimental unit consists of machinery module for induction motor drive and data acquisition module to obtain the fault signal. As the first step for diagnosis procedure, DFT is performed to transform the acquired current signal into frequency domain. And then, frequency components are selected according to discriminate order calculated by mutual information As the next step, feature extraction is performed by LDA, and then diagnosis is evaluated by k-NN classifier. The results to verify the usability of the proposed algorithm showed better performance than various conventional methods.

  • A novel damage classification method based on wavelet packet transform and statistical analysis is developed in this study for structural health monitoring. The response signal of a structure under an impact load is normalized and then decomposed into wavelet packet components. Energies of these wavelet packet components are then calculated to obtain the energy distribution. Statistical similarity comparison based on an F-test is used to classify the structure from changes in the wavelet packet energy distribution. A statistical indicator is developed to describe the damage extent of the structure. This approach is applied to the test results from simply supported reinforced concrete beams in the laboratory. Cases with single and two damages are created from static loading, and accelerations of the structure from under impact loads are analyzed. Results show that the method can be used with no reference baseline measurement and model for the damage monitoring and assessment of the structure with alarms at a specified significance level.

  • In the SG (steam generator) of PWR (pressurized water reactor) for a nuclear plant, hundreds of U-shaped tubes are used for the heat exchanger system. They interact with primary pressurized cooling water flow, generating flow-induced vibration in the secondary flow region. A simplified U-tube model is proposed in this study to apply for experiment and its counterpart computation. Using the commercial code, ANSYS-CFX, we first verified the Moody chart, comparing the straight pipe theory with the results derived from CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis. Considering the virtual mass of fluid, we computed the major modes with the low natural frequencies through the comparison with impact hammer test, and then investigated the effect of pump flow in the frequency domain using FFT (fast Fourier transform) analysis of the experimental data. Using two-way fluid-structure interaction module in the CFD code, we studied the influence on mean flow rate to generate the displacement data. A feasible CFD method has been setup in this research that could be applied potentially in the field of nuclear thermal-hydraulics.

  • Various studies have been conducted for the diagnosis of noise condition of complex rotary machines. In this study, diagnosis index using vibration signal is developed for the efficient and objective assessment of noise condition of a blower motor. The noise most commonly caused by the abnormal blower motor are Tick/Click noise and Tone noise. According to cause and noise characteristics, time-frequency analysis is used to diagnose Tick/Click noise, and smoothing in frequency domain is used to diagnose tone noise condition. The noise condition of the blower motors were diagnosed using the developed index and these results are compared with the diagnostic results by the experts. As a result, the agreement rate was about 95 %.
