  • In this paper we report the optimization method of the pattern size of the electrodes in PVA LCD for the transflective mode in order to improve the optical characteristics. Moreover, we designed the electrode of PVA LCD so as to remove the driving voltage difference between transmissive mode and reflective mode. As a result, we expect very simple manufacturing process and high optical performance even if complex process such as a multi cell gap process and multi driving method are not applied

  • A new 10.4" transflective TFT-LCD has been developed using newly designed color filter for sunlight readable application. High transmittance and color gamut are realized by the dual color filter and dual cell gap structure in the ECB mode. The color gamut of new device provides 17% in transmissive and 18% in reflective mode. This new device provides the $125cd/m^2$ of luminance, 240:1 and 27:1 of contrast ratio in the transmissive and reflective mode, respectively.

  • We optimized a patterned-vertical-alignment (PVA) transflective liquid-crystal (LC) cell for small pixel application. To achieve the high resolution display performance in the mobile communication equipments such as mobile phones, personal data assistants, and tablet personal computers, we optimized the parameters of liquid crystal and the electrode structure. Both the transmittance and the reflectance are maximized at the same time.

  • This paper proposes a transflective configuration of the dual operating mode liquid crystal display, which has transmissive dynamic and reflective memory parts in its pixel. By employing a wideband structure and optimizing the cell-gap of the liquid crystal layer, the reflective memory part shows a very low reflectance in the dark state, good dispersion properties for the entire visible range, as well as high reflectance in the bright state. The transmissive dynamic part is designed to have the same cell-gap and rubbing direction as those of the reflective part. The driving voltage of the dynamic part and transmittance of the bright state can also be controlled by using compensation film with a positive a-plate, which can compensate the reflective part. Experimental results in the memory part operation demonstrate that the contrast ratio is over 50:1 and the reflectance in the dark state is reduced to 56% on average of that of the conventional dual mode configuration for the entire visible range. The contrast ratio of the dynamic part is 300:1.

  • We present a new tool to measure precisely the emissive properties of displays at the pixel level with submicrometric spatial resolution. It is useful to check the technological defects and their impact on the emissive properties of the displays. Backlight films and transflective and reflective displays are measured.
