It is necessary to improve transfer impedance of Urban Rail Station station users in order to increase the usage of public transportation. This study constructed a model for calculating transfer impedance based on bodily sensational transfer time in Urban Rail Station stations and calculated transfer impedance on major Urban Rail Station stations in Korea. The study results show that the addition of 100 meter exterior walking distance increases 2 minute travel time, 100 meter interior walking distance increases 3 minute travel time, 100 stairways increase 4 minute travel time, and escalators decreases 1 minute travel time. The calculated transfer impedance based on bodily sensational transfer time in this study can be utilized as objective criteria to compare transfer conditions of different Urban Rail Station stations and to prioritize them for facility improvement. The calculated transfer impedance also can be used as facility guidelines for designing a new transit center.
This paper analyzes factors affecting rail transit ridership at urban rail stations of the Daegu Metropolitan City in 2011. Rail transit ridership is analyzed by dividing weekdays and weekends in order that their differences may be observed. The data used in this study includes various explanatory variables, such as floor area which was collected from building ledger and GIS cadastral map, number of bus routes(line) possible to transfer from urban rail transit, number of students enrolled in middle and high schools, and universities located in access areas of rail transit. For this study, multiple regression models are estimated including various explanatory variables affecting rail transit ridership of weekdays and weekends. From the study, the number of statistically significant explanatory variables and the relative effect of each variable are shown to be different between weekdays and weekends.
The recent increase of light rail construction by the private sector in Korea has caused a new issue in forecasting rail demand. Integrated fare systems between several rail operators is convenient and brings cost savings to users, and therefore is also very effective in increasing demand. However, it causes some short-term revenue loss to operators so that the private sector often suggests a non-integrated fare system. The current rail demand forecasting model is based upon an integrated fare system. Thus this model cannot be used to forecast the demand with a non-integrated fare system. Some value of transfer fare should be estimated and applied to forecast the demand in a non-integrated fare system. This study conducted a stated preference (SP) survey on urban railway passengers and estimated the value of transfer fare. The estimated value is 2,609 Won/hr, which is about 52% of in-vehicle time. This shows railway users have a tendency to pay more for transfer fares to save time or distance. This value has some limitations since it is derived from the SP survey. If some non-integrated fare system is applied in the future and a RP survey is conducted and compared with these study results, a more clear value of the transfer fare will be derived.

This research uses public transportation card data to analyze the inter-regional transfer times, transfer frequencies, and transfer resistance that passengers experience during transit amongst the metropolitan public transportation modes. Currently, mode transfers between bus and rail are recorded up to five times during one transit movement by Trip Chain, facilitating greater comprehension of intermodal movements. However, lack of information on what arises during these transfers poses a problem in that it leads to an underestimation of transfer resistances on the Trip Chain. As such, a path choice model that reflects passenger movements during transit activities is created, which attains explanatory power on transfer resistance through its inclusion of transfer times and frequencies. The methodology adopted in this research is to first conceptualize the idea of metropolitan public transportation transfer, and in the case that mode transfers include the city-rail, to newly conceptualize the idea of transfer resistance using transportation card data. Also, the city-rail path choice model within the Trip Chain is constructed, with transfer time and frequency used to reevaluate transfer resistance. Further, in order to align bus and city-rail station administrative level small-zone coordinates to state and regional level mid-zone coordinates, the big node methdod is utilized. Finally, case studies on trip chains using at least one transfer onto the city-rail is used to determine the validity of the results obtained.
This paper studies on the benefit evaluation of urban railway construction project. We compares Korean Method with Japanese in calculating the generalized cost(GC) of a trip. In Japan, the disadvantage of transferring to another mode or line is included to calculate GC of trip. And environmental effects are contained directly as rail construction benefit. But in Korea, inconvenience of transferring facilities like stairways and passageway for riding a subway is not accounted to analyse benefit. As a result, there is a little investigate to improve and overcoming the inconvenience facilities of transfer, access, and egress. So, we suggest the containing the disadvantage measure of transferring facilities when subway riderships are forecasted. That will be reduced tile capital size of subway.
Recently the Korean Government is increasing investment and interest on railway in the transportation field as "low carbon and green growth" policy become main national development strategy. While railway competitiveness is weakening over the road from the inconvenient door-to-door and transfer system of railway, it is meaningful to review excellent railway transfer system of advanced countries and adapt their implications for Korea. Their transfer systems like Japan, Hongkong, France, U.K. and German can be categorized in this research as kinds of transfer & connectivity system and transfer facility & flow planning, and, as a result, their implications can be concluded. Also, analyzing transfer system of Korea's main stations and reviewing the difference between Korea and other countries, this paper suggests main principles and directions of urban planning, alignment of rail line, partnership of project stakeholder in the establishment of transfer system in the railway station in the future.
This study suggested a method of forecasting market-share of each mode after introducing new urban rail transit lines. The study reflected the observed market share of presently operating urban rail transit into forecasting process in order to improve accuracy in predicting market share of each modes. For more realistic representation of the forecasting model, we categorized O/D pairs according to attributes of trip distance, access time and number of transfers. The analysis results of traveler's mode choice behavior with observed data showed that the trip distances are longer, the share of urban rail tends to be higher, and that the number of transfers is fewer and the access times are lesser, the share of urban rail also tends to be higher. Then, incremental logit model was used in estimating mode choice probabilities for O/D pairs along with rail transit lines while utilizing observed market shares of each modes and differences in transit service level. As the next step, the market share of rail transit after introducing new rail transit lines was forecasted by using incremental logit model with the intial share values calculated the previous analysis step. It also reflected changes in level of service for automobile in highway due to changes in highway systems and changes in mode shares after introducing new lines of rail transit. It can be expected that the proposed method would more realistically duplicates phenomena of mode choice behavior for rail transit and that it would be more theoretically logical than the typical existing methods using SP data and incremental logit model or using addictive logit model in this country.

This study classifies the types of urban railway stations that reflect the location characteristics of urban railway stations, the structure and form of station taxes, and the number of users, and the level of inconvenience in the transfer movement line for users by station type, the number and connectivity of transfer information, and the level of transfer convenience facilities. The number of installations, conflicts between users, and transfer information signs were analyzed. As a result of data analysis, it was found that the factors that cause the most inconvenience to urban rail users when transferring are the length and curvature of the transfer line, pedestrian density and number of passengers in the transfer passage, presence or absence of transportation convenience facilities, and the size and height of transfer information letters. These transfer inconveniences were objectified, quantified, and presented as evaluation indicators that can measure the transfer convenience of urban railway stations. Additionally, an evaluation scale was developed to measure the service level for each evaluation indicator. The evaluation scale for each indicator presented six levels by applying linear interpolation based on the maximum and minimum values of data derived through field surveys. However, it is judged that a comprehensive evaluation of transfer convenience that combines the importance and weight of each convenience evaluation indicator should be established through future research.
Seoul Metropolitan Government has performed alternative transit system, light rail transit(LRT), for settling the problems of urban public transit system based on conventional bus service and heavy rail transit(HRT). LRT projects of total 8 lines(about 73.6km), including Ui-Sinseol line, have been planned as Build-Transfer-Operate(BTO) projects. For the first LRT, Ui-Sinseol line, however, design of structure had met standard for design of HRT, because of no domestic design code for LRT when participates of Ui-Sinseol project submitted the design proposal. This case study reports a successful example of LRT design minimizing the scale of stations designed in base of HRT code. The problems, like oversized structures compared with LRT vehicles, excessive costs for construction, had been resolved through negotiations with the participates of Ui-Sinseol line. Result suggests that present and future costs for construction and maintenance of the LRT projects in Seoul be considerably reduced in advance.

After 1970-80's rapid economic and urban development, nowadays the old downtown suffers from the deterioration of physical environment, outflow of its function and cavitation of population. And this phenomenon makes urban regeneration as a new paradigm in urban development. This is the case of Myeongdong area (Jungang-dong, Monsung-dong), old downtown of Cheonan around rail station, in the same way. City government has tried many regeneration/ redevelopment projects on this area but all failed due to lack of feasibility. This study intends to suggest new viable strategic regeneration scheme of this area through research and analysis of TOD development, existing condition and problems. As a result, the area needs to be considered as a node that links bus terminal complex and central market place with walkable street. For regeneration of this area, a strategic development scheme of this area is suggested deploying private capital invested rail station, underground shopping mall, transfer center, culture complex and nature park with Myeongdong street mall.
