Heat transfer characteristics were investigated for the falling film flowing down the outside of an electrically heated vertical tube. Water was used for the falling film, and its Reynolds number was varied in the range of 70~500. Because water is heated and evaporated as it flows down, both sensible and latent heat transfer should be considered. The effect of the surrounding air movement was investigated by changing the direction of the air injection; without air injection, parallel-flow, and counter-flow. For all cases, sensible teat transfer rate was almost linearly increased with the increasing film flow rate. It was found that the film heat transfer coefficient was hardly influenced by the parallel air flow. However, the counter-flow of air reduced the heat transfer coefficient, which might be caused by the uneven distribution or flooding of the film. At high heat flux, a sudden change of the film heat transfer coefficient was detected as the film flow rate reached the transition value. It is supposed that this phenomenon was caused by the change in the film flow pattern.
In the present study, the effect of blade rotation on blade heat transfer is investigated by comparing with the heat transfer results for the stationary blade. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine and the turbine stage is composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has a flat tip and the mean tip clearance is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. For the experiments, the inlet Reynolds number is $Re_c=1.5{\times}10^5$, which results in the blade rotation speed of 255.8 rpm. Blade rotation induces a relative motion between the blade and the shroud as well as a periodic variation of incoming flow. Therefore, different heat/mass transfer patterns are observed on the rotating blade, especially near the tip and on the tip. The relative motion reduces the tip leakage flow through the tip gap, which results in the reduction of the tip heat transfer. However, the effect of the tip leakage flow on the blade surface is increased because the tip leakage vortex is formed closer to the surface than the stationary case. The overall heat/mass transfer on the shroud is not affected much by the blade rotation.
Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were peformed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned(knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat transfer performances(heat flux, heat transfer coefficient) were obtained. The results of this work were compared with the data reported previously. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes. The reason is estimated by the fact that the heat transfer resistance with the film thickness increased as the film flow rate increased. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20 K for a smooth tube, and at 10 K for a knurled tube. The heat transfer performance of the falling film was superior to pool boiling at a low wall superheat below 10 K for both tubes tested. The knurled tube geometry showed good performance than the smooth tube, and the increased performance was mainly came from the effect of the increased heating surface area.
In this study, the transfer length of 2400 MPa, seven-wire high-strength steel strands with a 15.2 mm diameter in pretensioned prestressed concrete (PSC) beams utilizing high strength concrete over 58 MPa at prestress release was evaluated experimentally. 32 specimens, which have the variables of concrete compressive strength, concrete cover depth, and the number of PS strands, were fabricated and corresponding transfer lengths were measured. The strands were released gradually by slowly reducing the pressure in the hydraulic stressing rams. The measured results of transfer length showed that the transfer length decreased as the concrete compressive strength and concrete cover depth increased. The number of strands had a very small effect, and the effect varied with both the concrete cover depth and concrete strength. The results were compared to current design codes and transfer lengths predicted by other researchers. The comparison results showed that the current transfer length prediction models in design codes may be conservatively used for 2400 MPa high-strength strands in high-strength concrete beams exceeding 58 MPa at prestress release.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer without additional external power in the case of rectangular air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface. In an attempt to enhance the heat transfer rate in two-dimensional impinging jet, the technique used in the present study was placement of square rod bundles as a turbluence promoter in front of the heat transfer surface. The effects of the clearance between the flat plate and square rod, and the nozzle exit velocity on the heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally. The results obtained through this study were summerized as follows. High heat transfer enhancement was achived by means of flow acceleration and thinning of boundary layer by inserting rods in front of the heating flat plate. The smaller the clearance between rod and heating plate was, the larger heat transfer effect became. Average Nusselt number reached maximum at $Re=5.76{\times}10^4$ and C=1㎜ and the enhancement rate of heat transfer became maxium at this condition with the enhancement ratio as high as about 1.427 when normalized by the flat plate value. The correlating equation of average Nusselt number and Reynolds number was obtained, which is $\bar{N}uo=1.324{\cdot}Re^{0.459}{\cdot}(C/A)^{-0.034}$.
The present study has been conducted to investigate the effects of Reynolds number on heat/mass transfer and pressure drop characteristics in a rotating smooth two-pass duct. For stationary cases, the heat/mass transfer and pressure drop Is decreased on turning region of both leading and trailing surfaces as Reynolds number increases. For rotating cases, increment of Reynolds number affects differently the heat/mass transfer and pressure drop on the leading and trailing surfaces. In the first pass, for example, the heat/mass transfer on the leading surface is greatly increased, though the heat/mass transfer on the trailing surface is almost the same. The reason is that effect of the main flow is more dominant than effect of secondary flow. In particular, it gave decrement of the heat/mass transfer and the pressure drop at turning region and upstream region of second pass for both non-rotating and rotating cases.
The issue of connection between entities has a lengthy history in educational research, especially since it provides the necessary bridge between base and target in analogical transfer. Recently, the connection has been viewed through the application of technology to bridge between sequences in order to be cognitively useful. This study reports the effect of sequence type (AT vs. TA) and connection type (fading vs. popping) on the achievement and analogical transfer in a multimedia application. In the current research, 10th -grade and 11th -grade biology students in Korea were randomly assigned to five groups to test the effects of presentation sequence and entity connection type on analogical transfer. Consistent with previous studies, sequence type has a significant effect: analogical transfer performance was better when base representations were presented first followed by target representations rather than the reverse order. This is probably because presenting a familiar base first helps in understanding a less familiar target. However, no fully significant differences were found with the entity connection types (fading vs. popping) in analogical transfer. According to the Markman and Gentner's (2005) spatial model, analogy in a space is influenced only by the differences between concepts, not by distance in space. Thus connection types fail on the basis of this spatial model in analogical transfer test. The findings and their implications for sequence and connection research and practice are discussed. Leveraging on the analogical learning process, specific implications for scaffolding learning processes and the development of adaptive expertise are drawn.
Many people are getting more and more interested in the value of information sharing in a supply chain in proportion to the development of information technology in these days. In spite of much interest in the value of shared information, the related studies concluded that the effect of only sharing information strategy between upper and lower level is not large However, many related companies want to link each channel members in the supply chain with on-line to expect to reduce the cost by means of information sharing. This study wants to evaluate the alternative strategy to reduce more related costs than only sharing information strategy. This paper analyzed that how much the total supply chain cost is to change in the case of a transfer of decision rights from the lower (retailers) to the upper level (depot, vendor) in a supply chain. The decision rights mean the rights of being able to decide when to order, how much to order, where to order, and what mode to transport or distribute, etc. in a supply chain. By the experimental simulation study to the simple case, the strategy to share only information took the low effect of 1~2%, but the strategy to transfer the decision lights from the lower to the upper member had larger effect of about 5%. However. for the strategies to work well, it needs to cooperate closely among each supply chain members, and the fruits from the transfer of decision rights in a supply chain are allocated to each chain members reasonably Therefore, there needs to study in the future not only the exact transfer effect of decision rights, but the reasonable allocation method of the fruits among the chain members.
The present study investigated the effect of relative position of the blade on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed wind tunnel with a stationary annular turbine cascade. The test section has a single turbine stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade is $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. The Reynolds number based on blade inlet velocity and chord length is $1.5{\times}105$ and mean turbulence intensity is about $3\%$. To investigate the effect of relative position of blade, the blade at six different positions in a pitch was examined. For the detailed mass transfer measurements, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. In general, complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as a laminar flow separation, relaminarization, flow acceleration, transition to turbulence and tip leakage vortices. The results show that the blade relative position affects those heat transfer characteristics because the distributions of incoming flow velocity and turbulence intensity are changed. Especially, the heat transfer pattern on the near-tip region is significantly affected by the relative position of the blade because the effect of tip leakage vortex is strongly dependent on the blade position. On the pressure side, the effect of blade position is not so significant as on the suction side surface although the position and the size of the separation bubble are changed.
