  • With increasing transmission speed of backbone networks, it is getting to provide enough available bandwidth. However, the bandwidth is not effectively utilized in volumetric data transfer. This mainly comes from the transmission protocol, TCP, which is used for most applications. TCP is inherently difficult to adapt the available bandwidth because of it's own characteristic of transfer mechanism. UDT is a prominent application level data transfer protocol which is targeting high speed network. In this paper, we propose UDT parallel transfer technologies which is adaptive to network status and then evaluate their performance in two points of view. Firstly, we measure data transfer rate of UDT with rate congestion control methods, and compare them with basic UDT. Secondly, we apply parallel transfer technologies adapted to network status, and measure their performance. Experimental results showed that UDT rate congestion control method outperforms UDT with 106% improvement in RTT 100ms section set with jitter 30ms. In addition, performance of parallel transfer with rate congestion control method showed 107% improvement than that of parallel transfer in RTT 400ms section set with jitter 20ms.

  • A syntactic and semantic approach is used to make type classification based on feature points(whorl, delta, core) and the shape of flow line around feature points. The image is divided into 30 by 30 subregions which are represented in the average direction and 4-tuple direction component. Next the relaxation process with singularity detection and convergency checking is performed. A set of semantic languages is used to describe the major flow line around the extracted feature points. LR(1) parser and feature transfer function are used to recognize the coded flow patterns. The 72 fingerprint impressions is used to test the proposed approach and the rate of the classification is about 93 percentages.

  • A numerical optimization has been carried out to determine the shape of the three-dimensional channel with oblique ribs attached on both walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Numerical results fur heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. four dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, streamwise rib distance on opposite wall to rib pitch ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related coefficients with a weighting factor. D-optimal method is used to determine the training points as a means of design of experiment. Sensitivity of the objective parameters to each design variable has been analyzed. And, optimal values of the design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.

  • In this work dynamic heat transfer in a CPFS (cable penetration fire stop) system built in the firewall of nuclear power plants is three-dimensionally investigated to develop a test-simulator that can be used to verify effectiveness of the sealant. Dynamic heat transfer in the fire stop system is formulated in a parabolic PDE (partial differential equation) subjected to a set of initial and boundary conditions. First, the PDE model is divided into two parts; one corresponding to heat transfer in the axial direction and the other corresponding to heat transfer on the vertical planes. The first PDE is converted to a series of ODEs (ordinary differential equations) at finite discrete axial points for applying the numerical method of SOR (successive over-relaxation) to the problem. The ODEs are solved by using an ODE solver In such manner, the axial heat flux can be calculated at least at the finite discrete points. After that, all the planes are separated into finite elements, where the time and spatial functions are assumed to be of orthogonal collocation state at each element. The initial condition of each finite element can be obtained from the above solution. The heat fluxes on the vertical planes are calculated by the Galerkin FEM (finite element method). The CPFS system was modeled, simulated, and analyzed here. The simulation results were illustrated in three-dimensional graphics. Through simulation, it was shown clearly that the temperature distribution was influenced very much by the number, position, and temperature of the cable stream, and that dynamic heat transfer through the cable stream was one of the most dominant factors, and that the feature of heat conduction could be understood as an unsteady-state process.

  • Shape optimization of an internal cooling passage with staggered dimples on single surface is performed and performances of surrogates are evaluated in this paper. Optimizations are performed so that turbulent heat transfer can be enhanced compromising with pressure loss due to friction. The three-dimensional governing differential equations have been solved to find the overall Nusselt number and friction factor which are related to the objective functions of this problem. Three design variables were selected among the dimensionless geometric variables. Basic surrogate models such as second order polynomial response surface approximation (RSA), Kriging meta-modeling technique, radial basis neural network (RBNN), and derived press based averaged (PBA) surrogate model are constructed. The optimal points are searched from the above constructed surrogates by sequential quadratic programming (SQP). It is shown that use of multiple surrogates can increase the robustness in prediction of better design with minimum computational cost.

  • Fouling is "a major unsolved" area in heat transfer research. Currently, fouling researches are performed in every directions-fundamental aspects, modeling and cumulating experimental data. In this study, an attempt was made to extend the knowledge in enhanced tube fouling. The Kern-Seaton fouling model which was originally proposed for smooth tube fouling was extended to repeated rib tubes. Key parameters-mass transfer coefficient and wall shear stress-were modeled for repeated rib tubes. Some critical points related with the enhanced tube fouling-uncertainties in the mass transfer rate, wall shear stress modeling, deformation of roughness shape during fouling-were discussed, and some quantitative evaluations were made.

  • This paper presents a method of optimal design of an automatic transfer system which is controlled by the electro-pneumatic servo scheme. The electro-pneumatic automatic transfer system can move parts to desired points or displace defective parts. The dynamic performance of the system can be examined by observing the behavior of the output. The output of the servo control system is the motion of the cylinder, pneumatic actuator. The dynamic performance of the cylinder is governed by the parameters of the components of the entire system. The optimal design can be accomplished by selecting of the parameters such that the desired dynamic performance of the cylinder is obtained. The optimal set of parameters might be obtained through the repeated simulations. Repeated simulations, however, is not effective to determine the optimal set of parameters since the set of parameters is large. This paper presents modeling, application of an optimization method, and the numerical results. The optimization algorithm utilizes the concept of the conjugate gradient method. The results show that the suggested optimization scheme can render faster convergence of iteration compared to other method based on an algebraic optimization method and can reduce the design efforts.

  • In this paper, a new identification method of the cascade control system is proposed which can overcome the weak points of Krishnaswamy and Rangaiah(1987)'s method. This new method consists of two steps. One is on-line process identification using the numerical integration to approximate the two process dynamics with a high order linear transfer function. The other is a model reduction technique to derive out low order transfer function(FOPTD or SOPTD) from the obtained high order linear transfer function to tune the controller using usual tuning rules. While the proposed method preserves the advantages of the Krishnaswamy and Rangaiah(1987)'s method, it has such a simplicity that it requires only measured input and output data and simple least-squares technique. Simulation results show that the proposed method can be a promising alternative in the identification of cascade control systems.

  • International technology transfer(ITT) or technology trade is a very comprehensive term covering various mechanisms and channels for shifting technologies across borders. Thus, it refers to numerous complex processes, ranging from innovation and international marketing of technology to its absorption and imitation. It includes technology, trade, and investment. Markets for exchanging technologies are inherently subject to failure due to appropriability problems, spillovers, asymmetric information, and market power. Thus, there is strong justification for public intervention. Technology developers are interested in reducing the costs and uncertainty of making transfers, along with protecting their rights to profit from such transfers. On the other hand, technology importers are interested in acquiring knowledge at minimal costs, asking for restricting sharply the exclusive rights of foreign firms to exploit technology. The purpose of this paper is to review the characteristics, risks, legal issues and contractual check points of ITT, focusing on the avoidance of commercial disputes during the very complex processes of ITT.

  • In the present paper, flow and heat transfer characteristics of confined impinging slot jets have been numerically investigated using a SIMPLE-based segregated SUPG finite element method. For laminar jets, it is shown that the skin friction coefficient obtained from the present SUPG formulation approaches the grid-independent Galerkin solution inducing negligible false diffusion in the flow field when a moderate number of grid points are used. For turbulent jets, the k-$\omega$turbulence model is adopted. The streamwise mean velocity and the heat transfer coefficient respectively agree very well with existing experimental data within limited ranges of parameters.
