  • Among the heat/mass exchange units composing an absorption system, the absorber, where the refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the liquid solution is the one least understood. In the present study, the effects of non-absorbable gas on the absorption process of aqueous lithium bromide solution falling film inside a vertical tube were experimentally investigated. In the range of film Reynolds number of 30 ~ 195, heat and mass transfer characteristics were investigated as a function of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration, 0.2 ~ 20%. An increase of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration degraded the mass transfer rate dramatically in the absorption process. The reduction of mass transfer rate was significant for the addition of small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor. At film Reynolds number of 130, an increase of non-absorbable gas concentration from 0.2 to 6.0% resulted in the decrease of mass transfer rate by 36% and 20% of non-absorbable gas by 59%. However the decrease of film Nusselt number with the increase of volumetric concentration of non absorbable gas was relatively smaller than the decrease of Sherwood number. Critical film Reynolds number was identified to exist for the maximum heat and mass transfer regardless of the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gases.

  • Tribological properties of friction materials containing different volume ratios of solid lubricants (graphite and MoS$_2$) were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Morphology and thickness of the friction film were carefully examined to correlate the friction performance with the property of the friction film. Results showed that the friction materials containing 16vo1. % of graphite and 5 vol. % of MoS$_2$exhibited best friction stability among others. In particular, the thickness of the friction film decreased as the amount of MoS$_2$increased and severe friction oscillation was observed when the friction material contained MoS$_2$only (21 vol. %). Microscopic observations and friction tests suggested that the coherent thick transfer film improved the friction stability.

  • For efficient use of solar energy in plastic greenhouse, thermal storage system was developed. The system was constructed with the counter-flow type air-water heat exchanger using a thin polyethylene film as a medium of heat exchange parts. Experiments were carried out to investigate the heat exchange rate, optimum water flow rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and the effectiveness of the counter-flow type air-water heat exchanger with polyethylene film bags. Mathematical model to predict air temperature leaving heat exchanger was developed. The results obtained in the present study are summarized as follows. 1. Heat exchange rate in the counter-flow type air-water heat exchanger with polyethylene film bags was compared to that of polyethylene film. Heat exchange rate was almost identical at air velocity of 0.5m/s on polyethylene film surface. But, heat exchange rate of heat exchanger with polyethylene film bag was $32{\sim}55KJ/m^2$ hr higher than that of polyethylene film at air velocity of 1.0m/s. 2. Considering the formation of uniform water film and the sufficient heat exchange rate of polyethylene film bags, optimum water flow rate in polyethylene film bags was $3.0{\sim}6.0{\ell}/m^2$ min. 3. The overall heat transfer coefficient of polyethylene film bags was found to be $35.0{\sim}130.0KJ/m^2\;hr\;^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the air velocity ranging 0.5 to 4.0 m/s on polyethylene film surface. And the overall heat transfer coefficient showed almost linearly increasing tendency to the variation of air velocity. 4. Mathematical model to predict air temperature leaving the heat exchanger was developed, resulting in a good agreement between the experimental and predicted values. But, the experimental results were a little lower than predicted. 5. Effectiveness of heat exchanger for the experiment was found to be 0.40~0.81 corresponding to the number of transfer units due to the variation of air velocity ranging 0.6 to 1.7 m/s.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate heat and mass transfer characteristics in a vertical falling film type absorber using LiBr-$H_2O$ solution with 6owt%. The experimental apparatus consisted of an absorber with inner diameter of 17.2 mm and length of 1150mm, a generator, an evaporator/condenser, a solution tank, a sampling trap etc. The parameters were solution temperature of 45 and $50^{\circ}C$, coolant temperature of 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, and film Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. Pressure drop in the absorber increased as solution and coolant temperatures decreased. Pressure drop in the absorber increased up to the film Reynolds number of 90, and then decreased at the further increase of the Reynolds number above 90. The maximum absorption mass flux observed at the film Reynolds number of 90. Absorption mass flukes increased as coolant temperature decreased. Absorption mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients under subcooled condition were larger than those under superheated condition. Heat transfer coefficients were affected by solution temperature more than coolant temperature. The maximum absorption effectiveness under the subcooled condition was 23% for coolant temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and 31% for coolant temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ under the present experimental conditions.

  • In present paper, mass transfer over a flat plate with film condensation including noncondesable gas is analyzed with the help of similarity methods. Couette flow was assumed in liquid film and boundary-layer approximation was used in the ambient flow. Governing equations were transformed into the ordinary differential equtions by the similarity methods. Runge-Kutta and shooting method were used in order to fine the effect of mass transfer on the velocity and concentrations at the liquid-vapor interface.

  • The effect of injection angle and blowing rate on a film-cooled flat plate has been investigated experimentally. Three cases of 90.deg. injection, 35.deg. streamwise injection and 35.deg. spanwise injection are employed. The naphthalene sublimation technique in used to obtain local mass transfer coefficients. Thus heat transfer coefficients are evaluated using heat-mass transfer analogy. Schlieren photographs are taken to visualize the trajectory of injection fluid by introducing carbon dioxide gas through injection tubes. The experiments indicate that due to the injection the heat transfer coefficients increase significantly in the neighborhood of the infection holes, so the design of film cooled component must be based on the heat transfer coefficient with injection as well as film cooling effectiveness.

  • Film cooling performance from two rows of holes with opposite orientation angles is evaluated in terms of heat flux ratio. The film cooling hole has a fixed inclination angle of 35°and orientation angle of 45°for the downstream row and -45°for the upstream row. Four film cooling hole arrangements including inline and staggered configurations are investigated. The blowing ratio studied was 1.0. Boundary layer temperature distributions are measured to investigate injectant behaviors and mixing characteristics. Detailed distributions of the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient are measured using TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal). For the inline configuration, there forms a downwash flow at the downstream hole exit to make the injectant well attach to the wall, which gives high adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient. The evaluation of heat flux ratio shows that the inline configuration gives better film cooling performance with the help of the downwash flow at the downstream hole exits.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics within a rectangular film cooling hole of normal injection angle for various blowing ratios and Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with those for the square hole. The experiments have been performed using a naphthalene sublimation method and the flow field has been analyzed by numerical calculation using a commercial code (FLUENT). The heat/mass transfer around the hole entrance region is enhanced considerably due to the reattachment of separated flow and the vortices generated within the hole. At the hole exit region, the heat/mass transfer increases because the main flow induces a secondary vortex. It is observed that the overall heat/mass transfer characteristics are similar to those for the square hole. However, the different heat/mass transfer patterns come out due to increased aspect ratio. Unlike the square hole, the heat/mass transfer on the trailing edge side of hole entrance region has two peak regions due to split flow reattachment, and heat/mass transfer on the hole exit region is less sensitive to the blowing ratios than the square hole.

  • To examine the enhancement mechanism of condensing heat transfer through microfin tube, the condensation experiments with refrigerant HCFC 22 are performed using 4 and 6 kinds of microfin tubes with outer diameter of 9.52mm and 7.0mm, respectively. Used microfin tubes have different shape and number of fins with each other The main heat transfer enhancement mechanism is known to be the enlargement of heat transfer area and turbulence promotion. Together with these main factors, we can find other enhancement factors by the experimental data, which are the overflow of the refrigerant over the microfin and microfin arrangement. The overflow of the refrigerant over the microfin can be analyzed by the geometric shape of the microfin. Microfin tubes having a shape which can give much overflow over the microfin show large condensing heat transfer coefficients. The effect of microfin arrangement is related to the heat transfer resistance of liquid film of refrigerant. The condensing heat transfer coefficients are high for the microfin tube with even distribution of liquid film.

  • Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were performed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned (knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat flux were obtained. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes due to the fact that the heat transfer resistance increased with the film thickness. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20K for a smooth tube, and at 10K for a knurled tube. The increased performance of the knurled tube was supposed to mainly come from the effect of the increased heating surface area.
