  • Liquid film thickness in laminar film condensation for flow over a flat plate generally is so thin that both fluid acceleration and thermal convection within the liquid film can be neglected. An integral solution method is proposed to solve the conjugate problems of laminar film condensation and heat conduction in a solid wall. It is found that approximate solutions of the governing equations involve four physical parameters to describe the conjugate heat transfer problem for laminar film condensation. It is shown that the effects of interfacial shear. mass transfer and local heat transfer are strongly dependent on the thermo-physical properties of the working fluids and the Jacob number.

  • The mechanisms of formation of transfer film under the condition of wear of Steel AISI1020 by natural rubber were investigated. The transfer film was observed and the formation mechanisms were clarified. The formation process of transfer film on the worn surface of the steel could be divided into two stages. Firstly, the adhesive layer emerged on the worn surface of the steel by adhesion of natural rubber. in which the macromolecular chains of natural rubber joined to the surface of the steel by Van der Waals' force. And then, the iron atom and metal oxide reacted with the macromolecular of natural rubber in the adhesive layer and produced Fe-polymer compound. As a result, the transfer film was formed on the worn surface of the steel. The transfer film was joined to the worn surface of the steel by the chemical bonds and electrostatic force.

  • Film boiling is of great importance in nuclear safety as it directly influences the integrity of nuclear fuel in case of accidents involving loss of coolant. Recently, nuclear power plant safety under earthquake conditions has received much attention. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no existing studies reporting film boiling in an oscillating system. Most previous studies for film boiling were performed on stationary systems. In this study, numerical simulations were performed for saturated film boiling of water on a horizontal surface under low frequencies to investigate the effect of system oscillation on film boiling heat transfer. A coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid method was used to track the interface between the vapor and liquid phases. With a fixed oscillation amplitude, overall, heat transfer decreases with oscillation frequency. However, there is a frequency region in which heat transfer remains nearly constant. This lock-on phenomenon occurs when the oscillation frequency is near the natural bubble release frequency. With a fixed oscillation frequency, heat transfer decreases with oscillation amplitude. With a fixed maximum amplitude of the additional gravity, heat transfer is affected little by the combination of oscillation amplitude and frequency.

  • This is the second report of a three part study on the absorption and heat transfer characteristics of absorber, the correlation of refrigerating capacity and heating capacity. The 2nd report deals with the heat transfer characteristics of a vertical falling film type absorber of inner copper tube. The solute is LiBr-Water solution(60wt%) and the solvent is water vapor. The film Reynoles numbers are varied in the range of 35~130. The states of LiBr solution at the top of absorber are supercooled liquid and superheated liquid. The results are summarized as follows ; Heat transfer results reveal that for the absorption of falling film, the state of LiBr solution appears to be influential in determining the heat transfer. Thus, for the state of supercooled liquid, heat transfer coefficient decreases with increasing the film Reynolds number, but in the condition of superheated liquid, it increases conversely. The mass transfer coefficients that were presented in the 1st.report and heat transfer coefficients of this paper are presented as the dimensionless correlation. The optimum water flowrate which brings about maximum value of heat flux in the film exists, and that increases with increasing the cooling water temperature.

  • This study is to provide the experimental information and basic data on heat transfer characteristics of horizontal liquid film driven by hot wind. Heat transfer characteristics of the liquid film in the rectangular duct was observed and the change of film temperature was measured. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as feed water rate and velocity and temperature of feed air. From the observation and the measurement the general understanding of heat transfer characteristics for liquid film driven by hot wind was provided.

  • Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.

  • Thermal transport from vertical heated surface to falling liquid film in a channel has been investigated experimentally. Air-flow is introduced into channel to make a counter flow against falling liquid film. This problem is of particular interest in the design of direct contact heat exchange system, such as cooling tower, evaporative cooling system, absorption cooling system, and distillation system. The effects of channel width and air flow rate on the heat transfer to falling liquid film are studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that heat transfer rate is gradually decreased with an increase in the channel width without air flow as well as with air flow in a channel. It is also found that heat transfer rate of air-flow is increased while heat transfer rate of falling liquid film is decreased with an increase in the air flow rate at a given channel width. However, total heat transfer rate form the heated surface is increased as the air flow rate is increased.

  • This paper presents the non-linear modeling and design of a robust sliding mode controller for film transfer systems. The tension of a film is sensitive to the speed difference between a winder and an unwinder. The change of the roll-radius as well as the moment of inertia result in the film transfer system begin variable and non-linear. In designing the robust controller. Two major aims are considered. The first aim is hat the web transferring speed tracks at any given reference speed; the second one is that the tension of the film tracks at any given reference tension. To verify the control algorithm, a Simulink model was built and compared with a conventional PID controller. In a computer simulation study, the suggested robust sliding mode controller shows better performance than the PID controller a various control inputs.

  • A series of experiments have been carried out to investigate the effects of non-condensable gas on the direct contact film condensation of vapor mixture under an adiabatic wall condition. The average heat transfer coefficient of the direct contact condensation was obtained at the atmospheric pressure with four main parameters ; air-mass fraction, mixture velocity, film Reynolds number, and the degree of water film subcooling having an influence on the condensation heat transfer coefficient. With the analysis of 88 experiments, a correlation of the average Nusselt number for direct contact film condensation of steam/air mixture at an adiabatic vertical wall was proposed as functions of film Reynolds number, mixture Reynolds number, air mass fraction, and Jacob number. The average heat transfer coefficient for steam/air mixture condensation decreased significantly while air mass fraction increased. The average heat transfer coefficients also decreased as the Jacob number increased, and were scarcely affected by the film Reynolds number below a mixture Reynolds number of about 245,000.
