Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of board training and complex training on ankle stability in taekwondo college students with a history of ankle sprain. Methods: Twenty-seven taekwondo college students were randomly assigned into a board training (BTG, n=9), complex training (CTG, n=9), or control groups (CG, n=9). BTG carried out disk and trampoline training 3 times a week for 8 weeks. CTG carried out resistive and plyometric training 3 times a week for 8 weeks. All subjects completed ankle stability test for static and dynamic balance in anterior/posterior and medial/lateral stability with New Balance System (BIODEX Medical System, USA). Results: There were no significant differences between three groups in ankle stability. Those who participated in BTG significantly improved static balance of left foot in anterior/posterior stability, and dynamic balance of both feet in mediolateral stability, but there were no change in CTG. Conclusion: Board training is more improved ankle stability in taekwondo college students with a history of ankle sprain than complex training.
Background: Back pain is associated with a high risk of recurrence. Various physical therapy techniques for back pain have been studied, including reprogramming the central nervous system by integrating sensation and motion with sensory exercise training. Objectives: To aimed verify the effectiveness of sensorimotor training in improving postural stability and pain levels. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: The study population was randomized into a sensory exercise training group and trunk stabilization training group and treated three times a week for 4 weeks. Each group took part in sensorimotor training for 15 minutes or lumbar stabilization exercise for 15 minutes. Results: After the intervention both groups showed Improvements in the variables. There was a significant difference in the dynamic postural stability, limit of stability, and modified visual analog scale scores in the sensorimotor training group compared to the lumbar stabilization exercise group (P<.05). Conclusion: Sensorimotor training appears to be an effective physical therapy exercise program that can be applied in patients with low back pain to improve muscle control ability.
Background: The multiple hop test is an active performance test that has been commonly used to assess individuals with functional ankle instability. Previous studies have suggested that insufficiency of dynamic postural stability and passive stability during dynamic activities can have an influence on performance in the multiple hop test. However, no study has investigated the effects of dynamic postural stability training and ankle bracing on multiple hop test performance in individuals with functional ankle instability. Objects: The purpose of this study was to compare the immediate effects of dynamic postural stability training versus ankle bracing in the performance of the multiple hop test for participants with functional ankle instability. Methods: Twenty-nine participants with functional ankle instability who scored below 24 in the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool were selected. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: a dynamic postural stability training group (n1=14) and an ankle bracing control group ($n_2=15$). The multiple hop tests were performed before and after applying each intervention. Dynamic postural stability training was performed using visual-feedback-based balance-training equipment; participants in this group were asked to perform a heel raise in a standing position while watching the centering of their forefoot pressure to prevent excessive ankle inversion. Ankle bracing was applied in the control group. Results: When comparing the pre- and post-intervention period for both groups, both methods significantly improved the results of the multiple hop test (p<.05). However, no significant differences were shown between the dynamic postural stability training and ankle bracing groups (p>.05). Conclusion: Both dynamic postural stability training and ankle bracing showed significant improvement (2.85 seconds and 2.05 seconds, respectively) in test performance. Further study is needed to determine the long-term effects of dynamic postural stability training and to determine whether insufficient dynamic postural stability is a causative factor for functional ankle instability.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate how upper thoracic manipulation and cervical stability training affects cervical range of motion and neck disability index of patients with chronic mechanical neck pain. METHODS: 30 patients with chronic mechanical neck pain, and randomly divided into the upper thoracic manipulation and the cervical stability training group. Upper thoracic manipulation group was conducted to the upper thoracic manipulation, and cervical stability training was conducted to the cervical stability training. Intervention period was 6 weeks, and 3 sessions, each of which was run for 5~10 minutes. The subjects were measured neck range of motion before and after intervention by electro-goniometer. Neck disability index was used to measure neck disability index Korean version. RESULTS: Comparison within groups, there were significant difference in neck range of motion before and after intervention, and Neck disability index significantly reduced in the cervical stability training group. The comparison between groups, there were no significant difference in neck range of motion and neck disability index. CONCLUSION: Upper thoracic manipulation and cervical stability training to the patients with chronic neck pain was helpful to improve neck range of motion and cervical stability training was helpful to improve neck disability index.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of balance training on gait stability. The study population included 17 male high school students who were divided into 3 groups, each of which underwent one of the following types of balance-training programs for 8 weeks: 1 foot standing on cushion foam, trunk muscle training, and inverted body position training. 0, 4, and 8 weeks, the following experiment was performed: The participants were asked to close their eyes and take 17 steps; the stability of forward and sideward movement was determined, and the direction linearity was measured. The results revealed that all the training programs caused a decrease in stride deviation and an increase in the and the stride length, thereby improving the stability of forward movement. All the programs decreased the variation in step width and were thus also effective in improving the stability of sideward movement. The inverted body position training program was considered very effective because the cross point appeared on post hoc graphic analysis after 4 weeks, and the deviation length for 10 m was low, i.e., below 4 cm. All the programs were effective with respect to direction linearity because they decreased the deviation in direction widths. The results indicate that whole-body neurocontrol training is more effective than simple muscle training and local focused balance training, although this neurocontrol training-in the form of inverted body position training-required a longer training period than did the other programs.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) training and robot rehabilitation training on trunk stability and standing balance in individuals with chronic stroke. Methods: There were 30 patients with chronic stroke, divided into two groups: 15 subjects who received PNF and robot training (the experimental group) and 15 subjects who received standard conservative training (the control group), that participated. The experimental group received treatment for 60 min: 30 min of conventional physical therapy, 15 min of PNF training, and 15 min of robot training. The control group received conventional physical therapy for 60 min. Trunk stabilization (trunk impairment scale) and standing balance (center of pressure, limit of stability, modified functional reach test, and Berg balance scale) were measured before and after intervention. Results: Within each group, both the experimental and control groups significantly improved after the intervention in all tests; however, the experimental group showed greater improvement in scores on the trunk impairment scale, the center of pressure, the limit of stability, the modified functional reach test, and the Berg balance scale. Conclusion: The study verified that PNF training and robot training had a positive influence on trunk stability and standing balance indices in patients with chronic stroke.

The purposes of this study were to determine the effects of lower extremity plyometric training on the proprioception and postural stability of collegiate soccer players with postural instability. The study was conducted from April 17, 2009 to September 28, 2009(for a total of 6 weeks). Ten male collegiate soccer players were enrolled into the study, then divided into two groups: the plyometric training group(PMT) and the classical postural stability training group(CPT). Plyometric training on the lower extremities showed statistically significant improvement on proprioception and postural stability(p<.05). Although not all neurophysiologic mechanisms underlying such an effect were revealed, it is proposed that plyometric training can be used as an effective training program to improve functional postural stability in soccer players with preexisting postural instability.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neuromuscular training of ballet dancers with chronic ankle instability on ankle stability and posture controlability. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of Thirty-twoyoung female ballet dancers with chronic ankle instability have voluntarily participated in the study. The participants were randomized to the neuromuscular training group(n1=11), elastic resistance squat group(n2=11), and control group(n3=10). The intervention was applied to a total of 18 exercises per six weeks and conducted in each group for one hour a day, three times a week. All subjects were evaluated for Cumberland ankle instability tool(CAIT), static balance at before-after intervention. Results: In the comparison of the effects within the groups, the effect of the intervention on CAIT and posture control was significantly increased in the neuromuscular training group and elastic resistance squat group (p <0.05). In the comparison of the effects between the groups, the neuromuscular training group, and elastic resistance squat group were found to significantly increase more than the control group (p <0.05). The effect of ankle stability is similar in neuromuscular training and elastic resistance squat training, neuromuscular training is more effective in improving posture control rather than elastic resistance squat training. Conclusions: When planning a rehabilitation training program for a ballet dancer with chronic ankle instability, neuromuscular training can be applied as an intervention method to improve ankle stability and posture control ability.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lower limb training using a sliding rehabilitation machine on the foot motion and stability in stroke patients. Methods: Thirty participants were allocated to two groups: Training group (n=15) and Control group (n=15). Subjects in the control group received physical therapy for 30 minutes, five times per week, and those in the training group received lower limb training using a sliding rehabilitation machine for 30 minutes, five times per week, with physical therapy for 30 minutes, five times per week, during a period of six weeks. Heel rotation, hallux stiffness, foot balance, metatarsal load, toe out angle, and subtalar joint flexibility were measured by RS-scan. Results: Significant improvement of the foot motion (hallux stiffness, meta load) and the foot stability (toe out angle, subtalar joint flexibility) was observed in the training group. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that lower limb training using a sliding rehabilitation machine is an effective intervention to improve the foot motion and stability.
PURPOSE: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of pelvic movements-based training on trunk stability and balance during sitting in children with spastic cerebral palsy. METHODS: Ten children with spastic cerebral palsy were matched to an intervention (n=5) or control group (n=5). The intervention consisted of two weeks of pelvic movements-based training, five times a week. All participants were evaluated before, during, and after pelvic movements-based training using a trunk impairment scale (TIS) for trunk stability and a modified functional reaching test for balance during sitting. The collected data were analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA and the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: The results of this study were as follows: 1) Significant increases in the TIS score (only dynamic balance) and forward reaching were observed in the experimental group, compared with the control group, after training (P<.05). 2) There were statistically significant time-factor increases within and between the subject' effects, in the TIS score (dynamic balance and total), dominant side, non-dominant side, and forward reaching (P<.05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study showed that for children with spastic cerebral palsy, pelvic movements-based training improves trunk stability and balance during sitting. Further studies will be required to determine the long-term effects of pelvic movements-based training.
