  • The safety evaluations of railway wheel sets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheel set materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheel set for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheel set while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.

  • In order to develop domestic railway technology, it is necessary that manufacturing technology of turnout should be kept up with update level, because turnout is the core component of high speed railway. Manganese crossing made of high manganese alloy steel is a important component of turnout. So far, this could not have been welded with rail steel due to metallic problem in Korea. However, joint technology hereunder between manganese crossing and rail by using Flash Butt Welding which is developed by Kangwon Railtech Co., Ltd is the state of the art and enable to realize rail continuousness in turnout section, speed up train velocity, reduce maintenance cost, and enhance riding quality.

  • In designing smoke-control system of rescue station in train tunnel, a purpose is to prevent a disaster by proposing the jet fan operation together with smoke-control curtain in tunnel fire. This study has investigated the relationship of the Heat Release Rate(HRR) and a adequate ventilation velocity to control the fire propagation in tunnel fire, and has improved the effect of the smoke-control curtain on preventing the flow of pollutants. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations with ST AR-CD(ver 3.24) were carried out on predicting the fire spreading and the flow of pollutants, considering jet fan operations and effect of smoke-control curtain. Our simulation domain is the full scale model of the 'DAEGWALLYEONG' 1st tunnel. The results represent that ventilation operation can control the fire spreading and pollutants effectively to prevent a disaster.

  • In steel works, Locomotives and torpedo ladle cars are used to convey the smelted iron that comes out Blast Furnace to the mill making mill. In this process, Identification of the vehicles position is very important because the area is broad and efficient operation affects a productivity and investment. At present condition, there are many ways to use to identify the vehicles number and position. This paper will present the new ways using GPS/DR based method. For this, we practiced the site test to gather the real data. First, we collect the velocity data at the wheel of the vehicles with the direction data via process computer. Second, after installing the gyroscope we gathered the data wit...

  • In order to investigate the compression wave propagating in a high-speed railway tunnel, a numerical calculation was applied to the wave phenomenon occurring in a model tunnel. Unsteady, one-dimensional inviscid or viscous flows were solved by an explicit TVD scheme, and the calculated flows were compared with the results of measurement in real tunnels. Tunnel noises caused by emission of the compression wave were characterized in terms of excess pressure of compression wave, pressure gradient in the wave front and width of the compression wave. Calculated attenuation, pressure gradient and width of compression wave with the propagating distance agreed with the results of measurement in the real tunnels. The results also show that tunnel noises are proportional to the train velocity entering the tunnel.

  • The assessment of PIV to measure the mean velocity and turbulence was carried out over a train of fixed two-dimensional dunes. The agreement between the PIV and LDV is good enough even in regions of flow reversals and high shear. Though limited in the wall normal direction field-of-view, PIV provides instantaneous flow fields, which reveal the complex nature of flow over dunes, as well as more sophisticated analyses such as two-point space correlation and quadrant analysis with a reasonable accuracy.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze the dynamic responses of pantograph-overhead contact line coupled system by using a condition monitoring system. The monitoring items are strain, vertical displacement and acceleration of a contact wire. Both strain and vertical displacement in the contact wire depends on uplift force and train velocity. Measurement of acceleration shows that the passage of the pantograph gives an impact force to a hard point on a contact wire.

  • In this report, numerical investigations have demonstrated, that the displacement underneath a moving loading reach a maximum value, if the speed of the load is equal to propagation velocity of the maximum wave. The load speed for which the maximum displacement occurs is called critical speed. The critical speed divides the velocities in a subcritical and a super-critical region. By means of calculations the dynamic behaviour of the slab track-soil is investigated. For concrete slab track dynamic wheel load are given in dependence of relevant excitation mechanismen and speed of the train. These loads can be used for the dimensioning of the track as well as far the prognosis of the vibrations at the track and the surrounding soil.

  • This paper explains compressive behaviors of sandwich composite laminates with adhesively bonded patches. The sandwich composite laminate is used for a train carbody structure and is of an aluminum honeycomb core and CF1263 woven fabric carbon/epoxy faces. The sandwich composite laminates were damaged by low velocity impact. The damaged sandwich composite laminate was repaired using scarf repair method. Then, the strength restoration of it was assessed by compressive test. From the test, it could be known that the compressive strength was restored up to 91% of undamaged one.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design speed and azimuth control of a mobile robot with drive wheel. The proposed control scheme uses a Gaussian function as a unit function in the fuzzy-neural network, and back propagation algorithm to train the fuzzy-neural network controller in the frmework of the specialized learning architecture. It is proposed a learning controller consisting of two neural network-fuzzy based on independent reasoning and a connection net with fixed weights to simple the neural networks-fuzzy. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by performing the computer simulation for trajectory tracking of the speed and azimuth of a mobile robot driven by two independent wheels.
